Hey everyone! My husband and I just adopted our first dog 3 weeks ago, and a wonderful person on Reddit pointed me towards this forum. I'm so very excited that there's a great, active community where I can research and learn everything to help our baby 🙂 So here's our story thus far:

Yuna was confiscated from an abuse case in December 2014. Her jerk of an old owner tied her to his truck by her back leg and was keeping her outside on the driveway. By the time animal control was called, the rope was embedded and all circulation cut off from her leg. Her owner was arrested for animal abuse, and Yuna was sent to the vet. In addition to the leg issue, she was also very emaciated.

The Animal Friends Rescue Project (AFRP) out here in Monterey, CA heard about her and funded her amputation and care. After surgery, she was placed in foster care with a wonderful caregiver who helped her during recovery and taught her basic obedience. She was up for adoption starting in February and a few potential adopters visited her in foster care, but none of them worked out.

Fast forward a bit to April, when we started our search for a new dog, reveling in the fact that we finally live in a community that allows dogs. I saw Yuna on the AFRP website and immediately knew we had to have her. We visited her at her foster home and got to bring her home a few days later. This is us on adoption day!

Yuna's a 2-year-old German Shepherd, possible mixed with lab or golden. She's settling in wonderfully. She latched onto me right away because I work from home and spend all day with her. She's a bit afraid of my husband when he gives a command or moves too quickly near her - I think because her abuser was a man. We're working on it though, she's already doing loads better. She enjoys watching my 2 cats run around, and loves to snuggle on the couch and go for long walks. Her favorite is definitely the beach, although the waves are definitely still a scary new thing.

She's still figuring out how the Kong works, but she also loves anything that squeaks and has already destroyed a few toys.

And there's a picture where I actually got her stump side. She's also got some huge calluses on her elbows from laying on a concrete driveway for so long with her old owner.

We're working on some separation anxiety; any time I leave the house she clearly runs around until she finds something that smells like me to cuddle with. Usually she pulls one of my coats from the hanger, but she's also pulled everything out of my purse and tore open a sack of flour that was in a shopping bag I had just brought home. I got her a Thundershirt, which she already loves, but I think I see crate training in her future while she slowly learns that I'm not going to leave her forever.

I've been slowly lengthening her walks because we hope to do some hikes and camping with her in the future. I've been looking up harnesses to help her along, and will probably get one soon. However, as I'm typing this she's currently at the vet to have x-rays done... last night at the dog park she ran full speed for the first time and hurt her other rear leg 🙁 We're hoping it's just a strained muscle, but it could also be a tweaked nerve, ligament tear or even hip displaysia. I'll update as soon as I get her back tonight.

Ohhhh we are in LOVE! Thank you for joining, your future posts won't need approval.

What a story. Yuna is so lucky to find you and you guys make a fantastic pack. I can tell she is that one-of-a-kind heart dog who will change your life in so many awesome ways. And to live in Monterey? OH LUCKY DAWG!

We have a number of members whose Tripawds lost their leg in a similar way, including Tripawds Spokesdog Wyatt Ray (who thinks Yuna is a foxy momma!). It's horrible and stupid and criminal what people can be capable of but the great ones like you make up for them. Thank you so much!

I hope she gets a good report back from the vet. It's not unusual to have stuff like this happen as we learn how to regulate and monitor their activity. That's one of the biggest challenges of having an active, healthy Tripawd, making sure they don't overdo it. Have you seen our e-book, Loving Life On Three Legs ? It will help you when it comes to knowing how to make sure she gets enough exercise but not so much she hurts her self now or mess up her joints. We want you guys around a long, long time!

Keep us posted OK? Oh, was the Reddit user a sweet pup named Curry?

She's gorgeous! I can't believe anyone would tie a dog up by their leg.

Have you tried wearing an extra shirt around the house and then taking it off and leaving it with her when you leave so the smell is already there? Could work when/if you crate her too.

Smore is my tripawd kitty who adopted me one summer evening. She had an injury to her front left leg and had to have her leg removed July 17th. She was only 3 or 4 months old at the time. Now she moves faster than some four legged cats!

Congratulations on having such a beautiful new addition to the family! Yuna looks and sounds like a wonderful friend, and she is very lucky to end up with loving folks like you and your husband 🙂

Good luck with the training, and I hope you get some good news following the x-ray. I can vouch for the ruffwear harness ! We are extremely fortunate to have one for our boy Ziggy (he is a front-tripawd) and it is great for him.

Please keep us updated on Yuna's life!

Thank you to everyone that's responded so far!

I just got Yuna back, but we're still not exactly sure what's going on. She had x-rays and the vet said her joint is a bit out of place. It could be due to a very strained muscle or a torn ligament. We're waiting for the radiologist to review everything so we have a better idea what's going on. It's definitely not a fracture though, which is good.

For now I've got her on very restricted bed rest, a muscle relaxer, and a pain med. She's supposed to start doing better in the next few days, but if not it's back to the vet.

We're stationed here for the military, it's so beautiful! She loves to go to the beach, hopefully we'll be able to go back soon when she starts to feel better. We're hoping to get stationed in Germany next - we keep joking about how Yuna will be able to go back to the motherland with her GSD relatives!

I have, but she tends to bite and drool a LOT on whatever item of clothing she gets and then loses interest in it. Which means after I give it to her the first time it needs cleaned... no wearing it again. Maybe I could give her a shirt I've worn that's about to go in the laundry anyway? Hmm... I'll try to figure it out.

I've heard so many amazing things about Ruffwear! But I'm really looking for one that has a handle on the rear end, since she needs help with the car and into bed. I'm looking at the Help 'em Up, which looks like exactly what I need. Just working to see if I can get a used one before I dish out all the cash for a brand new one.

WOW.. she's beautiful and hit the family jackpot!!!! (what is wrong with people - seriously...).

I don't have any advice but welcome and congrats on your new baby!!! My tripawd was a tripawd due to cancer and much smaller so we never needed a harness.

Congrats!!!!!

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife

Yuna has definitely hit the jackpot now! My Rosco is also the product of abuse, he became a tripawd 2 months ago after he was found by police with a rubber band tied around his leg. Some people just suck! Seriously, it takes NOTHING away from a person to be kind to an animal! I am so glad she is with you now. We also have PTSD type issues with Rosco and we too are trying to work through them. I think that's the hardest part for these guys, becoming a tripawd is the easy part. I don't have much advice on that aspect as we haven't found the answer yet ourselves. The first week we had Rosco he stuck to one of the toys his rescuer had given him like glue. He suckled on it and it was very comforting to him. I had gotten a bed for him that is really comfortable and that has now become his lovey. It's his "safe place". I agree with the shirt idea and I bet if you crate her it will give her a feeling of safety being in a confined space with her own lovey (your shirt).

You should post on the angels exchange thread, someone might have one of those harnesses they are willing to part with.

The Help 'em Up may indeed work for you. We haven't had it in the Tripawds Gear Shop for a while but still have our Blue Dog Designs reviews and demo video available here.

The Doubleback harness from Ruffwear has a handle for the hips, but it laces on and isn't recommended for rear-leggers, according to Wyatt.

Welcome Yuna, mom, and dad! What a lucky pup Yuna is to have landed in your family. It is so awesome that you are ready and willing to work through her various "issues". We have 3 tripawd GSDs, all rear leg amps. Our first, Codie Rae, had wire wrapped around her leg and had the same thing happen as Yuna did. She was dumped in the shelter nightbox with a necrotic leg. Our second, Travis Ray also comes from Monterey County (he looks a little like Yunasmiley) and was found as a stray missing a rear foot. We don't know the story on Austin Ray, he had been a tripawd for awhile when he was picked up as a stray.

Just wanted to say hi and also let you know I have a used Help em Up harness you are more than welcome to. I sent you a PM about it as well.

xoxo,

Wow...Yuna's story is such an inspiration!!!  Our fur kids' ability to still show love to humans after such horrible treatment is simply amazing!!  You and your husband are true Angels for giving Yuna a home after all her misfortunes thus far.  Yuna is simply beautiful and I'm so glad that she found her way to you.

Our Leland also dealt with separation anxiety.  He destroyed quite a few things in the home when hubby and I would have to leave.  We hated having to crate him but after all the furniture and carpeting he chewed up for our sanity and his safety we had to.  It is something that he eventually grew out of.  After a while I guess he just figured out we weren't going to be gone forever and that when we left he got all sorts of yummy treats.

And I'll be keeping my fingers crossed that Yuna's issue with her remaining hind leg isn't anything major.

Sooo good you adopted Yuna and give her a good life! And so sad what people can do with non-human animals...

She is a real beauty! (I have a slight preference for shepherd like dogs ;)). Good luck with her!

What a wonderful story! Not that Yuna was abused, but such wonderful people such as yourself took her into your hearts. Thank you so much and welcome!
