My 3 year old mini schnauzer dislocated her front wrist she did so much damage that either i have to fuse her wrist together so that she can no longer move the joint or i have to pick to amputate her leg.

the fusion is a 4 month recovery and for 6 weeks she will be in a splint and not be aloud to do anything but walk. it will take the full 4 months to get her to be as back to normal as possible. she will always have a limp and never have complete normal function in that leg.

or do i just amputate?

Welcome, your future forum posts will not require moderation.

Every dog is different, only you and your vet can determine if amputation is best for your pup. But too many times we hear from people putting dogs through multiple painful expensive surgeries tying to "save the leg" only to proceed with amputation later.

With a lower appendage surgery recovery or amputation you might want to consider working with Orthopets to see if an orthotic brace or prosthetic may help. be sure to bookmark Jerry's Required Reading List too!

Best wishes, please keep us posted.

Welcome - sorry for your dog's injury.  I just wanted to add that my dog had a broken leg that had never been set - she limped badly.  The vet suggested amputation because of future problems with her joints.  She looked at xrays and could already see some damage.  Apparently severe limping can throw a lot of their body out of alignment and put stress on their joints.

I know it's a hard decision.   This site is a wealth of information and support!  Keep us posted on your decision.

Oh that's a tough one I"m so sorry. To add to the great advice already posted here, I would recommend an analysis with a veterinary rehabilitation therapist, who can help you determine what you might expect if the legs goes or stays. Also, check out Rosco's story, he's a Schnauzer doing great on 3!

Hi Zoey!  Let me know if there's anything I can help you with from the schnauzer-owner perspective! Our Rosco did great post-surgery, and we're so thankful we did the surgery and that he recovered well.  Let us know how it goes, whatever your decision!

Rosco is a mini-schanauzer diagnosed w/ melanoma on his right hind paw on 4/4/14 after two months of monitoring & testing.  Rosco joined team tri-pawd on 4/9/14.  He will be 10 years old in May and lives in Brooklyn. See cartoon Rosco here & Rosco videos here.
