Hi guys I'm heartbroken at the moment as my 7 year old husky was hit by a car this morning and his back left leg was severed above the ankle ,vet has told me that he will require amputation of the leg as the leg is further damaged.. my heart is broken as he is such a fun loving dog and I'm an tikis as to what his quality of life will be like now as he is quite a large dog. Hate myself at the moment and worried about the future 🙁

I know exactly how you feel with the sadness and guilt but everyone here will tell you that it doesn't help and they are right!

I was also unsure but my Tai had her rear leg amputated almost 3 months ago and she has a great quality of life - she walks, plays, eats, rides in the car - everything.  There are posters here with larger breed dogs who can speak directly about size issues, if any.

There is an adjustment period as your dog recovers but you can both get through it!

You've come to the right place for support and advice, I don't what I would have done without it.

Wow how traumatic for you to go through.  Please don't feel guilty these things happen so fast.  How lucky your dog lived through this and you have the chance to help him.  Rest assured your guy will be able to do most everything he did before.  Yes you will have to change up a few things to be able to ensure his remaining legs stay strong but he'll adapt beautifully.  In fact I'll bet he will amaze you with how well he adapts.  Please keep us posted on your boy.  Hugs!

What's your Husky's name? If he's like most of the bred, he's a "wild and crazy guy"...in the best way!! They are such smart dogs and always seem to be puppies forever! 🙂

You need to put all your focus on staying strong and positive. Guilt is truly the most worthless emotion in the world!!

When is surgery scheduled? Is the Bet doing the surgery and Orthopedic Surgeon? Will he be staying at a 24 hrstaffed clinic? I knkw this hit you oit of the blue and it may be you need to stick with your vet regardless.

If he has no other injuries, and I'm sure the Vet will check him thoroughly, he will probably stay the first night after the surgery at the hospital. Some dogs stay longer.

They shave a lot of fur so don't even bother to look at his incision when you pick him up. He'll be so happy to see you...a bjt druggy and maybe wobbly.

He'll probably come home with Tramadol, Rimadyl, Gabapentin, and an antibiotic. Some have a patch on for a few days too. And yes, recovery is no picnic and it's full of ups and downs for a week or two! Its is MAJOR SURGERY and it hurts!

If you have hardwood floors you'll want to put non slip scatter rugs down for traction . No jumping up and down on the sofa and no stair climbing for the first two weeksish. Rest and potty breaks. That's it at first.

Now, let's go to the good lart...And there is a good part! Your boy will be just as wild and crazy as ever once recovery is over!! Sure, he'll have a few face plants at first, but he'll figure thi gs out very quickly!

We have a well known group of sled dogs based in Alaska. A TRIPAWD Husky led the pack!!

Oh, and we have tripawds here a @ot larger than a Husky! My Bull Mastiff, Happy Hannah, was 125 lbs. We have Great Dane tripawds, Mastiff Tripawds, yep, lots of large dogs!

Update when you can

Hugs!

Hi!  Can't wait to see pictures of your fur baby!  Amputation is not to be feared.  When I joined this group, I was taught to be "more dog"; meaning that your baby will live in the moment.  Not think about OMG I don't have a leg but instead OMG the pain is gone--thanks Mom.  My Bandit was 65 pounds with a rear leg amputation.  By day 10 post amputation I was amazed by how "normal" he was.  It is a healing process, but our babies are very adaptable.  We can learn a lot from them.

You will have lots of support!  Keep us posted...Deb and Angel Bandit.

Like your pup, our Murphy became a Tripawd due to being hit by a car. He had other injuries also, which led to him having a total hip replacement on the remaining back keg. After a long recovery from the hip surgery, he returned to being the "happiest dog in the world".

Kathi and the Turbotail April Angel...and the Labradork

Murphy is a five year old Lab/Chessie cross. He was hit by a car on 10/29/12 and became a Tripawd on 11/24/12. On 2/5/13, he had a total hip replacement on his remaining back leg. He has absolutely no idea that he has only three legs!

UPDATE: Murphy lived his life to the fullest, right up until an aggressive bone lesion took him across the Rainbow Bridge on April 9, 2015 and he gained his membership in the April Angels. Run free, my love. You deserve it!

My Otis was 106 pounds pre-amp, with mild arthritis in his hips, and he did just great on 3!  Our walks were very short, but everything else was the same.  He chased cats and squirrels, slept on the sofa, did stairs to the bedroom, played with his sister Tess and stole food off the countertops.  The first two weeks of recovery are hard, but then your guy will amaze you with how well he does!

Otis - 106 pound lab/Dane mix, lost his right front leg to osteosarcoma on Febuary 9, 2016.  Four rounds of carboplatin completed in April, 2016.  Lung mets August 25, 2016.  Said goodbye too soon on September 4, 2016.   Lost his adopted sister, Tess, suddenly on October 9, 2016. likely due to hemangiosarcoma.

Wherever they are, they are together.

I'm sorry to hear about the accident!

My current Tripawd Elly was hit by a car when she was 7 months old and lost her right rear leg as a result.  I adopted her after she was healed up, she came to our house at 10 months old.  Elly is a small pug mix who hasn't been slowed at all by her missing leg.  She files up and down the stairs and walks/hops faster than me on our walks.  We work on core strength and balance in some fashion every day through food puzzles, obedience, games and balance exercises.

Elly really doesn't know any other way of life, most people don't even notice she is missing a leg.  I'm really sorry you are facing amputation, but as you can see by all the posts here life is not over for your boy!
