Hello, community!

I'm Emily, and I'm the proud momma to Panzer, an incredibly affectionate, loving, and silly Rottweiler I rescued when he was about 9 months old.  Panzer is my first rottie, although I come from a family of big dog lovers (long succession of Newfoundlands) and have since adopted another Rottweiler to ensure that my home is sufficiently chaotic.  Panzer is also doing his best to win the award for the most expensive "cheap" rescue pup, as he has had both of his knees repaired (TTAs), and now he has officially joined the tripawd family.

This phase of our journey started the Monday after Christmas when we picked him up from the kennel/daycare to find that he was noticeably limping on his right foreleg.  It was Panzer's first weekend of being fully cleared to rough house with no restrictions at daycare since his most recent TTA a few months prior, so I initially wasn't worried about him being a bit gimpy given how hard I know he plays there.  However, I soon had a bad feeling that got worse the next day when I palpated his leg and he was clearly tender.  On New Year's Eve, I sat on the floor with him, found the slightly swollen, painful part on his leg, and Panzer buried his head in my chest.  That was enough for me, and we wasted no time setting up an appointment with his surgeon to get an x-ray.  I had read all about osteosarcoma over the years, but I tried to talk myself out of the creeping fear that my sweet doofus pup might have it.  But, when our vet grimly came back into the room and put the x-ray up on the screen, the tumor was clear.  I immediately burst into tears.  An aspirate was performed, so we waited for the results but also set up an appointment with the oncologist since OSA was "strongly suspected" given the location of the lesion (distal radius) and that Panzer was a nearly-8-year-old male neutered Rottweiler.

The aspirate sample was inconclusive, and I had to make the nerve-wracking choice of whether to go ahead and amputate without being 100% sure of the diagnosis or get a biopsy and wait another week for results.  After hours of going back and forth on it, a whole lot more tears, calls to the oncologist, surgeon, and my parents, I decided to go ahead with the amputation, and Panzer went in for surgery on January 8.  He came through really well, although we had to make a couple of return trips to get a replacement fentanyl patch, methadone (!!), and then a drain installed to deal with a big seroma he developed that made him look like he needed a mansierre.  After the 2nd trip to the emergency vet, I had the distinct impression that Panzer just missed all the vet staff and wanted more cuddles from them.  He has also thoroughly enjoyed his anti-cancer additions to his diet, including raw organic goat's milk and raw beef patties mixed into his usual Orijen and fish oil.  Bismarck (Rottie #2) is definitely envious of Panzer with all these special treats and makes a point of licking Panzer's bowl clean after each meal.

Panzer is gaining strength and a lot more comfort with each passing day, and he's already back to his goofy old self.  It has been a challenge keeping him sturdy on the icy, slushy Midwestern sidewalks, but Panzer is doing remarkably well learning to adjust.  He got his staples and drain out this evening at 10 days post-op, and now we just need to make sure the oncologist is comfortable with his scar healing progress.  Not sure if anyone else has experienced this, but at the intersection of the two big incisions, he has a small triangular patch of dead skin.  Our hope is that the tissue is healing underneath so that the skin doesn't need to be cut away, which would just delay our being able to start chemo.  We're also waiting on a second opinion requested by our surgeon and further information from the pathologist because Panzer's biopsy came back asking more questions than it answered.  Apparently, none of the tested samples of the mass produced any osteoids, so the pathologist wasn't able to definitively diagnose the cancer as OSA.  All we know for sure that he has right now is a spindle cell sarcoma, his lymph node is clear, and his chest x-ray is clear.  I'll probably learn more tomorrow, but I don't want to get my hopes up that it could be something other than OSA.  For now, the plan remains that Panzer will probably start chemo this week, assuming that the oncologist is satisfied that his healing is sufficient.

We're at the beginning of a long road, but I have already learned so much from this tripawds site and forums.  Thank you all so much for being here.  I know I'll need you.

Such an adorable picture of Bismarck and Panzer!!  They are just precious laying there together.

I too am sorry that Panzer is going through this but as you mentioned this site is very informative and folks here are willing to lend support and advice for new parents just starting on this journey.

I wish you and Panzer luck for a speedy recovery and that all goes well with the upcoming chemo.

We'd love to see more pictures of both your boys.  Like you I also have a fondness for big dogs.  My Leland was a 108lb Dobie boy who sadly I had to let go back in June.  I currently have Lucian and 8 mos old Dobie boy who is at least in the 80+lb range...he is one BIG boy!

Thank you all for the support!  I will be speaking with the surgeon and oncologist today about our schedule going forward and whether we can get any more answers about what type of cancer this is.  I am anxious about any further delay in starting chemo, though.  Everything I have read indicates that time is of the essence here with respect to commencing chemo following amputation.  Unfortunately, if the piece of necrotic skin needs to be cut out before chemo can begin, we may lose another 10 days, which is far beyond the 10-14 day post-op recommendation.

As far as the chemo...and I'm not a vet..there are MANY instances where dogs aren't able to start checmo aroundnthe two week mark due to recovery issues, so don't let concern you too much. These are just "guidelines" that are hard to stick to sometimes!

My Bull Mastiff Happy Hannah had a "slow recovery" and I didnw start here chemo until after the third week...osteosarcoma.. She sailed through four rounds of carboplatin and we had THE most splendid bonus quality time anyone could ever imagaine!!!

Remember, "statistics" are just guidelines too! Pranzer does NOT have a time frame stamped on that cute Rottie butt of his!

And add a scoop of ice cream to all that health food every now and then.......Happy Hannah believed dtrongly that it was THE best nutritional supplement available!!way-cool

Looking forward to more updates and oics!

Hugs!

Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife

Ohhh I love your story! I mean I hate that it happened and you're dealing with cancer, but you just sound so optimistic and strong and upbeat, Panzer is gonna ROCK OUT as a Tripawd and kick cancer's butt! I hope your oncologist visit went well. Keep in mind, guidelines are just guidelines, they don't take your own specific dog into account and they aren't cut and dry rules. Lots of dogs here defy every odd there is, so I hope with all my heart that Panzer will be one of them. Take things one day at a time and you'll be a-OK.

Thanks, Jerry!  We have our next appointment with the oncologist tomorrow morning, and the plan is to start the first chemo treatment tomorrow if all goes according to plan.  We still haven't gotten the second opinion or conclusive findings on the type of cancer yet, so I'm stuck in this limbo of trying to prepare for the worst (osteosarcoma) while keeping a glimmer of hope that we could be dealing with something else (maybe fibrosarcoma).  The answer will come soon, I know.

Update time!

Panzer sailed through his first round of chemo (carboplatin) this past Friday.  In fact, he's laying on the floor noisily chewing a cow bone as I type this.  He is hopping around like a champ and overall doing great.

I got a call from the oncologist this afternoon and, based on the voicemail, the second opinion biopsy/staining/analysis results from Michigan State are in, although I'm still not sure they could be called definitive "results."  Basically, we still don't have a 100% answer, but the follow-up report is leaning more toward a fibrosarcoma than osteosarcoma.  The oncologist said that she was "really happy" with the report, but she is still leaning toward us continuing chemotherapy to be on the safe side.  I need to chat with the oncologist tomorrow, obviously, but right now I have a ton of questions I'm mulling over.  The primary inquiries that come to mind are:

1. What are the chances that this still ends up being osteosarcoma?

2. Is the only way to definitively reach a diagnosis just waiting on the dreaded "clinical progression", or is there more we can do to find out?

3. If it is fibrosarcoma, is carboplatin the correct chemo/treatment to be using?  What about radiation?

Are there other questions I should be asking, too?  Again, I'm so hesitant to get my hopes up that this could be something other than osteosarcoma.  I mean, we're talking about an almost-8-year-old male rottweiler neutered before he was 1 year of age (not my choice--adopted him at 9 months and the rescue had neutered him then) whose tumor presented in the classic location of distal radius.  All of that *screams* osteosarcoma.  Is it really possible that this is something else?

Oh geez so frustrating not to get a clear answer yet, I'm sorry. But wow I'm so glad to hear he sailed through chemo! YAY!

It wouldn't be the first time an inconclusive report has happened here and yes, there has been times when an osteosarcoma diagnosis was incorrect. Those are great questions for your onco. Here's another list of questions you can pull from:

YAAAAAAAAAY FOR PRANZER sailing through chemo!!!

SorryI don't have any answers to your questions and I know not having answers is frustrating. Unfortunately, it's pretty common trait of this stupid piece of crap disease. Actually you eventually get somewhat used to it...the certainty becomes the uncertainty!

Pranzer is a stong and fit pup and he will do well no matter what!! A "confirmed diagnosis" doesn't mean squat to Pranzer! He's gonna keep on living in the moment and enjoying life to the fullest!

Can't wait to see more pictures of Pranzer and Bismarck. Two v ery, very handsome pups!

Go give that sweet boy a big smooch for us, okay?
