My Grand dog Luna is having her leg amputated today. She is a white German Shepherd will be 2 years old in November. She cut her foot on a week ago. They treated and wrapped it daily for 4 days seemed to be improving but it became inflamed over last weekend. They took her to the vet yesterday. She was running a temp and showing pain symptoms. The Vet said severe infection and amputation would be the only way to save her. So worried. It seems extreme. They trust the Vet. Luna had P arvo at the end of last summer and this Vet saved her. There big boy Koda a 6 year old Alaskan  Husky is fine. I am just worried. Any advice would help me and them. Thank you.

Hi Tracey, Luna and family. I'm sorry to hear that you're going through this but rest assured a young GSD will think nothing of losing that spare leg. Our Wyatt Ray was 8 months old when he lost his leg to neglect, and he's now six and doing great.

You can help Luna's recovery by being strong and positive, and making sure her home is Tripawd-proofed. Slippery floors are a Tripawd's worst enemy so be sure to put traction down like throw rugs, which will help her confidence.

Keeping her weight down is also critical. You want her leaner than the average German Shepherd, because any excessive weight will be detrimental to her joints.

Finally, making sure she doesn't overdo her activity, especially with Koda, is important. Dogs will keep going and going until they drop and you don't want a Tripawd doing that since it's really hard on their joints. Check out the Tripawds Gear Blog for tips and our e-book, Loving Life On Three Legs , for tons of insight on keeping a Tripawd healthy and hoppy for life.

Let us know how surgery goes, we'll be thinking of you!

Awww, sorry to hear about Luna. Yes, amputation does seem "extreme", but far more so to humans than to our dogs!

I know it's hard to wrap your head around, but Luna really will handle being on three legs as though she's been thst way all her life! Now, that's not to say that recovery from major surgery isn't rough for a couple of weeks. And she may even have trouble getting up and walking for a few days...or may not. Remember, she will be on pain meds and they can make her woozy.

Will she be spending the night? Let us know what kind of pain meds the vet sends her home with tomorrow...usually Tramadol, Gabapentin snd Rimadyl plus a good antibiotic.

STAY CONNECTED!! We understand this journey like no others can. And, collectively, our first hand experience with tripawds is invaluable!!

Oh, and a lovely German Shepherd here named Codie Rae just celebrated her tenth birthday...nine of which have been as a tripawd!!!

We are right here by your side. Let us know when Lunar comes home and how she's doing.

Sending lots of hugs and well wishes to you and your pack!

Glad to hear Luna is out of surgery and awake.  I just did this journey with my grand dog Max and my son Bob.  Max is also a German Shepherd.  He's now 5 weeks post op and doing very well.  In fact Max and Bob stayed here for Max's recovery for almost 4 weeks so I experienced it all first hand.  The first few days can be a little tough but once those are over you see progress each day.  Luna being so young will only help her.  Soon she will be moving around like she's been doing it all her life.  Max had osteosarcoma so we are following up with chemo but he's gotten his sparkle back and now it's like old news losing his leg.  He's 6 1/2 so he's older than your Luna.  There's a video on my posting "Max is out of surgery" in the treatment and recovery page of him outside moving around 11 days post surgery if you want to check it out. It is amazing how well our furfaces adapt to life on three legs.  Try not to worry.  Sally is right.  CHOCOLATE does help!! If you have any questions make sure you ask.  There is a wealth of knowledge here and I couldn't have done this journey without the help I found here.  They were lifesavers for me.

Absolutely NO chocolate for dawgs!! ZERO!!

HOWEVER.....tee hee.....when Happy Hannah was preparing to transition to the Bridge, I put in a special made-to- order for XLg Chocolate Angel Wings to help her fly! Her transition dinner included a couple of M&Ms!

So "Grandma", grab a bag of M&Ms and celebrate Luna's bright future filled with so much joy and love (sans chocolate)!

Yep, Sally is always right about that!  lol

Luna will do just fine, probably better than all of you!  The first 2 weeks or so are usually the hardest.  Pain control can sometimes be tricky - too much medication and not enough medication often look the same, so it's a fine line to balance.  She'll probably come home on a combination of medications, so it's best to space them out so that she has adequate coverage.  Since there were 3 adults in our house that could medicate Murphy, I wrote out a medication schedule and we all marked off what we gave so that we could easily keep track.  Luna may not want to eat much, and that's ok.  Broth with some rice is good, maybe some chicken thrown in or whatever they can get her to eat.  We got Murphy to take his meds with peanut butter (be careful, some cheaper brands contain xylitol, which is dangerous for dogs)...we just put a little on a spoon and put the pill in it.  I guess a lot of dogs can smell the tramadol in it, but Murphy never gave us a hard time.

We're all here whenever you need anything - whether good or bad.

Luna is doing fine. Her Mommy not so good. She has been up moving and eating. So glad to hear. But her Mommy Daddy and sister went to the Doctor yesterday to find out they have pink eye. So they cannot visit Luna until Monday. There Vet is keeping Luna for 2 weeks to insure she is healed and getting around well. Thank you for your encouragement. All advice will be most appreciated  as we go along this journey

Their vet is keeping her for 2 weeks?  wow, that's a long time!  I don't think I've heard of anybody keeping a dog that long, usually it's just a night or two.

I think two weeks is extreme but This Vet saved Luna last year when had Parvo. They trust them. Maybe having Koda and Annabelle who Will be 1 on November 21st are factors. I know they want to make sure she is healing well. They will go see her Monday and maybe she will be ready to come home.just not sure

Well, l we always learn something new on this site...TWO WEEKS??? WOW! I also am curious why. Is the vet giving some sort of treatment? Is he concerned about a recurring infection? It just seems that two weeks would really ne hard on Luna to be kept in a cage and away from her humans.

Luna's avatar picture is BEAUTIFUL! She is gorgeous!!

I'm having computer issues, but I jave read Lunar's blog, just having trouble replying... The picture of Lunar and Koda is adorable!!

Hopefully Launar can come home tomorrow.

Hugs to all...and sorry about the pink eye...ugh!
