Hi Tripawd Nation!  It's been more than a month since our last post, but I wanted to post after we came back from camping.  Well, a few weeks ago we crossed the 20 month mark.  Holy cow!  Really?!  And shortly after that we went camping.  Last time we camped, in the dog-lovin' state of VT, Jackson had his limp.  His limp, for those not aware, was due to his growing tumor (unknown at the time) that weakened his knee and allowed for a partial "ACL" tear.  We were treating him with rimadyl and rest...but we all know what eventually happened.  So anyway, that was 2 years ago and I frankly didn't think Jackson would live to see another campsite.

He did and he's still awesome!

In fact, he's as good as ever.  He was on full chipmunk patrol and even helped scare off a marauding raccoon.  He chased flies and bees.  Basically, our site was pest free.  He'd bark to be let loose (nice try, pal!), so I'd make sure I had on my running shoes and OFF we'd go!  VROOOOOM!!!!!  We're staring down his 10th birthday (will we make it??) and this senior tripawd cancer-warrior sprints like the dickens!

With his pest-patrol hardwork, he's developed a cute habit: around 7:30pm each night he'd roll off the dirt, hop to the tent, bang his head into the "door", turn around and bark at us.  He wanted to go to bed.  So I'd take him for a pee and put him to bed.  He tucked himself in, on his palatial bed, and wouldn't wake until we came in.  I'd pee him again and then he was out for the night!  I guess when you're used to napping nearly 20 hrs a day and now, when camping, have pests to patrol all day, it's tiring work!  He doesn't nap during the day while camping!  Cute guy.  Very cute!

Other news: last update I was slightly concerned about his weight, b/c he had dropped to his lowest...but we were trying.  Still, cancer makes you worry about all sorts of things.  So nearly 6 weeks after that weight-check, with a week with grandma in there...he's back up to 61.4lbs!  While the weight gain isn't ideal (heck, he's still a lean guy at 61lbs), it confirms his weight loss was on purpose and not b/c of cancer or drug side effects.  Whew.

His latest urine check, last Friday, revealed no crystals and a pH of 8.  We've been dealing with these crystals for a while now and while there have never been any problems b/c of them, nor are they at high values, I take it as a challenge to expunge them.  At least for now, they're gone, but I'm beginning to realize it's a random, minimal, innocuous condition for Jackson.  We'll continue to monitor them, his urine pH, and weight forever.

We've got 2 months left of leukeran and then that's it!  I'm OK with it...I think.

So here's to my fuzzy-buddy, J-Pod!  I love you, sweetie, and we're SO proud of you!  Like all our tripawds here, he inspires me every day and reminds me of what is most important.  Love you, Jackson!

ACL tear in right hind leg 12/5/12 and scheduled ACL repair surgery 12/21/12. Pre-op xrays revealed osteosarcoma. Amputation 12/28/12.  Chemo (carboplatin) started Jan 10, 2013 and ended on April 5, for a total of 5 doses. He handled carbo like a champ!  No side effects.  We started metronomic therapy at his third chemo and have been also doing some holistic treatments.  He's a lively, playful 10 year old huskie-boarder collie and a very proud member of the Winter Warriors!  Our love. Our funny little guy!

Dear Katy,

these are wonderful news on Jackson, and the pictures are delightful -  I love his look on photo #2 !

20 months deserves a big ampuversary celebration !  from what I see you have been enjoying your time with Jackson, and he had lots of fun camping again.  Keep enjoying.

Daniela & Johnnie

p.s. could you share what metronomic therapy and holistic treatments Jackson has been doing?  My boy is going for his 5th round of carboplatin (also OSA) next Tuesday, and we still have to decide if we go for round 6 or stop at 5, and what the next step will be.

Our awesome Golden Boy was diagnosed for OSA in April 2014 in the proximal humerus, front-leg amp on 05/20/2014. Finished chemo (Carbo6) on 07/10/2014. Ongoing treatment: acupuncture + K-9 Immunity Plus ( 3chews) and home-cooked no-grain diet.   Stopped Apocaps because of liver issues.   Liver issues: controlling altered enzymes with SAM-e and Milk Thistle.  October 17:  started having seizures.  Taking fenobarbital for seizures.  April 18: started prednisone.

Great news Katy.  I love love that J is doing so well.  He is chasing squirrels, chipmunks, bees, etc being total dog as he is supposed to.   You will make it to his 10 plus birthday.  No problems there I can feel the good juju.

2 more months of Leukeran forever or just short term?? I know you talked about that awhile back but I can't remember.  He is doing awesome.  Who needs the leukeran.  not J.  Keep kicking butt Mr Winter Warrior.

Hugs

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife

A 20 month Ampuversary is AWESOME!!!

You are looking great and I have no doubt pest-patrol can be very tiring work....there's just so many critters in the woods!  It's ok if you need a little extra shut eye.

You keep going strong fella and wishing you many more Ampuvesaries and Birthdays!!!

Looks/Sounds like Jackson had a great time camping. Congrats on the milestones and keep up the positive attitude. What a great accomplishment!!!

Chance is a 10ish Shetland Sheepdog Mix who was rescued from the shelter in January of 2013 and diagnosed with Osteosarcoma in September of 2013. He had a front left amputation and 6 rounds of carboplatin. He had a great 11 months and was diagnosed with lung mets on 8/23/14. He was released to the bridge on 8/28/14.

Thanks, everyone!  Jackson is doing so well.  We're, of course, THRILLED!

Hey Daniela and Johnnie!  Check out this blog post I wrote a few months ago: http://tripawds.....a-in-dogs/

As for Jackson's treatment plan: He sailed through 5 rounds of carbo chemo.  We could have done 6, but we decided to save the money.  Our onco really wanted at least 4 rounds and the 5th was my way of "topping it off" and striking a balance (and compromise with my hubby).  At Jackson's third chemo, he started metronomic therapy with cytoxan.  But, about 5 months into cytoxan he developed a very common side effect of it: urinary cystitis (http://tripawds.....tronomics/).  It took nearly 7 weeks for it to clear up and then he was switched to leukeran.  He's been on it more than a year now.  As I wrote, he'll be on it for only 2 more months and that's it.  Metronomic therapy isn't meant to be long term...plus, most dogs with OSA don't have "long term", so beyond 6+ months of this treatment plan, there's little understanding of how long is too long!  Also part of his metronomic therapy is an anti-inflammatory.  Jackson has been on rimadyl for 2 years now, every day.  So leukeran and rimadyl are his "western" drugs; he gets these in the AM.  In the AM he also gets BSST from Only Natural Pet (= essiac formula) and GlycoFlex III (LOTS of MSM in there, which is the goal!).  At night he gets his second dose of BSST, Dr D's dose of omega 3 oil, and MUSH (Only Natural Pet).  He gets a handful of veggies with dinners.  He LOVES all veggies.  It's pretty unreal.  At first, after his amp, he got boiled chicken to aid muscle growth.  Now we focus on veggies to nourish and supply fresh, un-processed goodness and antioxidants.  His "eastern" or holistic supplements are aimed at supporting his immune system, reducing inflammation, and fighting cancer (mushrooms are magic!).

Check out this post, too, on getting your metronomic drugs compounded: http://nutritio.....me-from59/

I hope that helps!  BEST BEST BEST wishes for sweet Johnnie!!!
