So sorry to hear your news and also happy to hear that you are holding up well. I'm new to this site, but I wanted to share with you that Dr. Damian Dressler, a vet in Hawaii, has written an e-book based on all his research into cancer in dogs and, more importantly, he has developed a product called Apocaps (available from amazon.com) that did well in trials as far as fighting the cancer and prolonging life.

Thanks for the feedback Lexi, we found Dr. Dressler's e-book very informative and wrote a review in the Tripawds Downloads Blog. Apocaps info can be found in the Amazon Selections blog too!

OfflineHi Dan,
Sorry to hear about Gus' latest news-
You have lots of good specific suggestions here- so I wanted to offer something that has helped me make decisions for my pug Maggie.
Mag lost her leg to mast cell cancer, and while she has beaten the odds on survival she has had ongoing issues with cutaneous tumors since her amp. I have treated them in various ways, but last year I decided that she would have no more surgeries, no more chemo, and I decided long ago that she would not have any radiation treatments. These decisions I made knowing her, how she deals with things, her age- now 11 years old, and her other medical conditions.
I tell you this not as specific advice, but for the bigger picture. You know Gus best- now might be the time to decide what treatments you are willing to do, now and in the future. I have found that making the 'no more aggressive treatments' decision last year has helped me immensely this year as we were faced with the diagnosis of a second type of cancer. Now when I find myself occasionally doubting my decision not to treat this new cancer aggressively- I think back to why I chose this path last year, and it gives me the strength to continue with what I know is best for Maggie at this point in her life.
Good luck as you continue your journey with Gus.

I'm so sorry to hear the latest news about Gus. I don't have any new suggestions to add, but wanted to let you know we're here for you, and will keep cheering Gus along! Please keep us posted.
Sending lots of hugs,

Well I talked to our vet this morning and asked him about Metronomic therapy and Palladia. He is going to check with Ohio state to see if we can get in on some trials with Palladia and also check on Metrononic therapy since he isn't familiar with it, see, I knew this was a great place to be as maybe we can expose our vet to some things available that he wasn't aware of and help someone else in this area that might have to deal with this also. I checked out k-9 Immunity, at 90 lbs that ain't cheap, so I think we are going to pursue these two methods first. I think Gus is sore today from where he poked around in that lump with the needle to get the sample, but other than that, he's staying in the shade watching his empire. Thanks for everything, you guys are great. Paws up, Gus and Dan

OfflineYeay, so glad to hear your vet is willing to investigate things he doesn't know about. The fact that he collaborates with OSU is a sign of a very, very good vet!
Spoil that boy rotten, poor pokey pup! Paws crossed for you both, have a great relaxing weekend.

Yeah, it can get pricey for larger dogs. We were lucky enough to get Jerry in a clinical trial for K9 Immunity. Others have reported success using Power Mushrooms, another much less expensive immune system boosting supplement.

You're doing GREAT! Keep up the pawsitive attitude, it'll make the biggest difference.
Never feel badly about any decisions you made, they were all the right one for your pack.
Once more, Jerry has said is so well and so concise. To paraphrase another comment I have read from this community, guilt can only steal your time. Keep on enjoying every moment and we hope that some of these great suggestions above will help. We will be here for support even if we can not add to the technical advice above.

OfflineI'm so sorry Dan and Gus about the latest developments… As you've already read here… it's not necessarily the end… Some dogs live many more months with their lung mets… some do the metronomic therapy, others just do the power mushrooms and K9 immunity. I know it's all expensive… I had such financial issues when my Jake was diagnosed… and I finally ordered the mushrooms, but they came too late and he lost his battle a few days later… I don't know if they would have made a difference or not, but in many other dogs, they seemed to have…
All I can tell you is to enjoy every single day you have left with Gus. None of us, including your vet, really know how long that may be… He may be one of the lucky ones… I hope and pray!
Sending you and Gus a big fat hug!! You're both in my thoughts and prayers…

Good morning folks, I am soaking up all your advice and suggestions, and am interested in pursuing these Power Mushrooms, haven't heard back from the vet yet about metronomics or palladia. We started Gus on prednisone along with an antacid, but it seems people have had some nice results with these mushrooms. Can you tell me if when any of you used mushrooms, were your buddies on anything else at the same time and did you experience any side effects, my research is telling me to make sure about compatability with different things you give the dogs. Of course, since I want to get started as quick as possible, I will probably have to wait an extra day with the holiday, geesh, more waiting!!!! but let us remember the reason for this holiday. Have a great one, paws up, Gus and Dan

OfflineI have not used the power mushrooms, but haven't ruled out the possibility. I have a good friend who's dog had lymphoma and she used a mushroom mix (homemade) that when I started comparing is very similar to what is in Power Mushrooms. Kato had a long run – in excess of two years and died recently at the age of 14. She swore by the musthroom mix recommended by a herbalist.
The thing that has stopped me from trying it is Trouble's allergies. I am just not willing at this point to take that chance.

OfflineI really think the Temodar was worth the price. (I see cometdog mentioned our results) My vet found it at a university hospital in So.CA which is close to the Mexican border and so has to be price competitive so was relatively less expensive. Some people go to Canada for it. Can't beat a dog that loves feeding the cows with you! Good luck, keep posting.
