Buddy is a new member to this site. After limping around for a few weeks a startling diagnosis of osteosarcoma was made on this beautiful 7 1/2 year old golden retriever. I traveled 4 hours for his surgery at Fox Valley Animal Referral Center. His right back leg was amputated the day after Thanksgiving, and he WALKED out of the hospital the next day to go home. He 's met many challenges, such as learning to squat on his remaining back leg to have a BM, learning how to back himself out of a corner, and navigating the house with the big "lampshade" on his head! It has been 6 weeks and Buddy has had 2 chemo treatments so far (Carboplatin) and I'm happy to report he is doing awesome. He is back to playing with his 1 1/2 year old golden sister Bella and taking cold winter walks. He adores car rides but I need help getting him into the car. He will run down a set of steps but really won't attempt to go UP steps until my daughter lifts his back leg to the first step — then he does the military crawl the rest of the way while I stand at the top of the steps cheering him on. It's great to know this website exists!

OfflineWelcome Buddy and family. If you need help getting Buddy in and out of the car, you may want to consider the Ruffwear Webmaster harness. We got one for our Max after his amputation, and it proved invaluable.

Offlinewelcome buddy and family. we are sorry for the diagnosis for buddy, but glad that you are doing everything you can to help him out. And finding this site should be a huge help to you too. maximutt is right too, the ruffwear harness just cant be beat for aiding in getting dogs up and in and out of the car and up and down stairs. It seems to be extremely durable, I have supported Coopers entire weight with it and he weighs in at 117 pounds. Im sure if you have any other questions some one here will chime in and be of help or point you in the right direction. We will look forward to seeing pictures of Buddy!!

OfflineSorry about the osteosarcoma diagnosis. I'm so glad that Buddy's doing so well. I second the Ruffwear harness idea. It worked great for us, especially useful for stairs and car rides. Keep us posted, can't wait to see some pictures!

OfflineWelcome Buddy and Family – I, too, have a golden diagnosed with osteosarcoma. He too, is a rear leg amp (left, however). He too, will bound down the stairs, as well as off of the bed or sofa, but can't or won't comfortably go up the stairs. He HATED the harness. We tried everything, and he simply wouldn't buy into it. Sort of passive aggressive, if you know what I mean. He wouldn't outright defy us, but it became very clear he did not prefer the harness. Hence, he doesn't wear one. We scoop under his belly and help him up the few stairs he is required to navigate. That being said, I know the harness has been a miracle for many.
The website to Lincoln's blog is included in our signature block, if you want to check him out. He's done amazingly well, and did well from the start; much like Buddy. He swims, runs (check out the calendar http://www.cafe……328304612 ), and pretty much lives just about the same as he used to.
Good luck. Keep us posted. You'll find lots of support and a wealth of knowledge here.
