I think it is wonderful what you are doing for Trey. Many people in your situation would not take in a puppy with a physical issue let alone do what is needed for him. I hope you and Trey are both adjusting to the change.

Update on Trey:   I just called the vet about 25 minutes ago & they said he is doing fine & I could come & pick him up any time.  I was quite surprised as originally they told me the end of the day.  I had to ask if they were sure they were talking about my Trey as he did have an amputation & not spay or neuter or declaw like the others that were there!  They said yes my Trey could be picked up any time between now and 4:30.  I will be going to pick him up shortly as I am sure he will be better here at home with me then in a crate at the vet's office with no one paying attention to him all day!  Thanks everyone for the well wishes & support!

My puppy, Trey, had his surgery this morning. They sent me home with Novox (anti-inflammatory). Does anyone else think that there should have been another pain medicine along with that? He has done nothing but whine since I brought him home over 2 hours ago. He has not slept yet!

Awww yay! Lucky pup to come home!

Good question about pain meds. YES! Ask them for more than a NSAID, that is not enough in my non-vet opinion and what others have experienced here too. Kinda like a surgeon giving you an ibuprophen after you had your leg amputated. OUch! At the very least, Tramadol with proper dosage instructions is needed. Good job!

I have to run now but I'll be in the chat tonight. Let us know how he's doing.

I second asking for additional pain medication if he looks uncomfortable. Jack was on 5 different medications before we found the right combo, and once we hit on it, she was so much more comfortable and happy. Don't be afraid to call your vet and ask questions- goodness knows I wore my vet down with questions!

WOW,!!! I hope none of them ever are faced with the major surgery like amputation and just given an anti-inflammatory!!!! AND, not all dogs spend at least one night at a vets, but most do!

He sho u ld be somewhat drugged from all the hospital pain meds which shoukd have been really strong!

YES!!! Ditto....more pain meds!!! And as soon as possible!!! The first several days and nights are pretty rough anyway....but without pain meds....I can't even imagine!!!

Stay connected tonus okay? And as others have said...call the vet with any wuestions and don't hesitate to ask us about any concerns.

PLEASE keep us posted and let us know about pain meds. Find another vet if he won't give poor Trey any!!!

HUGS! I know this is so tough to watch! My Happy Hannah didn't sleep for nineteen hours....and that was after spendingnthe night innthenhospital AND on Tramadol and other pain meds!

Take care!

Oh my gosh....seriously all they sent home was an anti-inflammatory?!?!?!?

Little Trey needs more than an ibuprofen for goodness sakes!  Most of the Tripawds here have been on Tramadol and/or Gabapentin.  My Leland didn't do well on Tramadol (refused and fought to take it) but did great on Gabapentin.  I've seen where others have been on Fentanyl patches...so there are some different pain medications that can be tried to see what works best for Trey.  I have no doubt you've been worried with Trey in obvious pain.

I hope you were able to get Trey some more meds today.

Sending both you and little Trey a hug!!

Trey is doing much better today.  He is moving around & a little more like himself.  He did seem a bit agitated earlier today & couldn't rest.  He is finally resting...think this is the first napping he has done since sleeping last night!  We had no problems last night while he was in the crate.  He didn't whine or fuss.  I am a bit tired as I worry about him & not used to having animals in my bedroom in a crate!  He won't let me leave his sight.  I don't know how anyone can get away to grab anything to eat or drink!  He is not in pain like he was yesterday so the meds are working.  They said the Novox was anti-inflammatory and pain medication when I called yesterday.  I asked about Tramadol today if he needed it & they said he is kind of young to be giving that to him so we shouldn't.  He just turned 13 weeks old which is young for surgery to begin with as they don't usually do them until 6 months.

So glad little Trey appears to be a little more comfy.

Im sure Trey is clinging to youbecause he hasnto be so atednand confused..and,young or not, I'm sure he feels the pain of having his leg taken off. So glad he has you to care for him, to reassure him and to comfort him. He is so precious.

Is he eating...drinking..pooping..peeing?

Are you taking care of yourself? No silly, I'm not gonna askyou about pooping and peeing...but are you eating okay? Sleep when Trey sleeps. This is a pretty intense time butit sounds like Trey is onnte road to recovery!

Ppst more pics whenyou can. He's just so cute!

Hugs to all! Good job!

Trey is doing well.  He is not eating a lot but I think they got him a little spoiled on the soft food when he was at the vet.  He is drinking and going to the bathroom.  Last night was night #2 in the crate & no potty breaks were made & he made it through the night great without any accidents!  I also slept pretty well.  He wants so much to play and we do a little but he gets to tired so quickly.  I don't know what I will do when he can play like a puppy should since this keeps you busy enough as he is now!  He is lying in his bed beside me on the floor in my office while I type this.  He is napping & I am going to try & do some of my work from home.  We will see how this goes!  My 2 cats are finally starting to show their faces since he arrived but they are not eating like normal but I am sure they will get used to things in a week or so!  My one cat, Abbee keeps hissing at him.  One good thing to note:  I actually got to make coffee this morning & have a yogurt & some grapes!  LOL  Thanks everyone for checking in & all of your posts.  They are very helpful!!  :)

YAAAAY TREY!!! Doing the happy puppy potty dance over here!!!

As far as "spoiling" goes...don't fight it...it's impossible not to spoil a tripawd...and then to be a PUPPY TRIPAWD on top of that......yep...spoiling and loving like you never even imagined possible!!

Glad you got a little break this morning...good job...everybody !

Can anyone tell me how long it takes for puppy's appetite to return to normal after having surgery?  He is eating and going potty but not eating like he was before surgery.  Also, his incision looks good to me all except there is 1 place at the top near the neck that seems a little swollen & I bumped it accidentally yesterday and today and he yelped.  He does not yelp if you touch anywhere else.  Is there anything to be alarmed about before the vet opens tomorrow morning & I call and bug them again!?!?  I am worried as I don't want it to be an infection.  He was trying to lick it (which he probably did do) so I bought a 0-3 month T-shirt for him to keep him from licking the area.

Did they send you home w/a cone of shame ? They have soft ones too you can get. It is really important to keep his mouth away  from the wound.

As far as appetite, my girl, Shelby, never had that problem but sometimes the pain meds make them less than hungry. maybe try something different, like wet food or some boiled chicken?

Good luck! you're doing great!

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife

Sounds like he's still in recovery  mode, not burning a lot of energy and likely just not as hungry because of it. I would mention it to your vet but likely nothing to worry about. Allison's correct, keep that wound clean. As long as it's not smelly or full of discharge it's probably good but keep an eye on it.
