Just wanted to post a quick update for any of you who are following along. Chance's surgery yesterday went well. He is still resting at the hospital until this afternoon. I visited him last night and he was quite out of it due to pain meds but was awake. They said he has been getting around on his three legs just fine so far. Though he hasn't peed yet or eaten anything.

Seeing him that way made me feel extremely guilty. I know it's not my fault. But I was just sad and feeling bad for him. I'm excited to get him home later today so I can start with proper TLC and Mom care!

YAAAAY for Mr Chanceypants!!!

The surgery's gone well and he's already mobile and getting around on three legs. That's great news! It took my Meg a couple of days before she would walk on three.

Now listen, please... you have NOTHING, repeat NOTHING to feel guilty about. Precisely the opposite. You are getting rid of Chance's pain. This is a courageous, loving and entirely responsible thing to do. You are a great Mum and you are doing all you possibly can to help your pup. You deserve a massive pat on the back, you do NOT deserve to feel guilty.

Try and see things from Chance's point of view. He doesn't give two hoots about his leg. He's not even thinking about his leg. He's just thrilled that his pain has gone. He's thrilled that he's got such a loving Mum, who is prepared to do anything for him, who will pull out all the stops to give him the pain free life he deserves, who's just waiting to get him home and snuggle up and give him some TLC.

Keep reminding yourself of that, and whenever you start to waver, tell yourself again. Chance will be taking his lead from you. Double the reason to stay positive. You're doing great Patricia. You are a fabulous Mum and Chance is lucky to have you.

Stay connected. We are all here to support you and Chance!

Glad he is doing well after surgery.  The next 10 days to 2 weeks will be hard, but once the staples come out, he will perk back up and you will see real improvement day after day.   By week 3, Otis was back up on the sofa, one of his favorite places in the world.  He started taking short walks at 1 month.   By month 3, he was able to come upstairs.   He could chase cats and squirrels, play with his sister Tess, steal food off the counter, and was his normal, goofy, happy self.  We are also big fans of the Ruffwear Webmaster Plus harness - you can read more about it in the gear blog, lots of us use it.  And chemo is a very individual decision.   We did four rounds of carbo, with minimal side effects.   Some dogs have no side effects, and some have severe enough side effects that they stop the chemo (which, by the way, is always an option).   Some do not do chemo for a wide variety of reasons - financial, availability of oncology services within a reasonable distance of home, the fact that their dog hates the vet or riding in a car, or a million other reasons, all of which are absolutely valid reasons.  But, as others as noted, this is not something to worry about now.   Right now, its just the recovery.  A few other things to consider - you might want to put an industrial floor mat in the kitchen, so he doesn't slip on the tile.   It also helps to have multiple dog beds in the room where you/he will be sleeping and in your main family room.  Nice to have something to ice the incision with - a bag of frozen peas works great for this purpose.   And it helps to keep a log of when his meds are due (there will be quite a few at first), when he eats, drinks water, pees and poops.   He will probably not want to get up a lot at first (although sometimes dogs are quite active the first day home when they still have hospital meds in their system), so it is important to know when you absolutely have to get him up and outside.  And, feel free to post with any questions, concerns, worries - this community is amazing, and there is almost always someone online, even in the middle of the night!

Otis - 106 pound lab/Dane mix, lost his right front leg to osteosarcoma on Febuary 9, 2016.  Four rounds of carboplatin completed in April, 2016.  Lung mets August 25, 2016.  Said goodbye too soon on September 4, 2016.   Lost his adopted sister, Tess, suddenly on October 9, 2016. likely due to hemangiosarcoma.

Wherever they are, they are together.

Hi Patricia heart

So glad to hear surgery went well clap

Nothing to feel guilty about as Clare and Sally said, he is PAIN FREE and on the way to recovery, even if the first weeks may be challenging.

You've got great advice from Christine, stay focused and calm and before you realise the hard times will be over and Chance will be good old Chance againsmiley

Keep us posted, we are all here for you!

Sending you a big hug and cuddles to your cutie heart

Yay for getting through surgery and already being mobile!

Just popping in to say I agree with everyone 😛 I wasn't sure I would get there, the first tough few days, but I'm already now feeling so glad about my decision. Of course I wish I hadn't had to make this particular decision, but given the pain or death that was the alternative, and considering how well (I'm stunned how well, even after reading loads of other accounts) my Harry is adjusting already, there absolutely was no better option.

Get some rest while you can and do some things to look after yourself and manage your own anxiety while you're hanging out keeping an eagle eye on your baby for the next little while, too. heart

Hi everyone,

Thanks so much for checking in on us and for all your words of support! I picked Chance up a little after 1pm today. He came bursting through the doors at the vet office and was so happy! And he is already cruising around on his three legs. We got home and have just relaxed in the living room (his recovery zone) all day together. He's been resting and relaxing but his appetite is good and he took a HUGE pee. No poop yet. He is still my same loving boy and I am just so relieved that he made it through the surgery OK.

We live on the second floor and he does great going up the stairs but is still apprehensive about going down. For those of you who have to deal with stairs, do they eventually get the hang of it? For now we are just taking it super slow and I have a towel around him for extra support.

He is doing great with all the meds so far. They left a catheter in do deliver some pain meds directly to the incision area. He whimpered a bit when I administered that but I think because it was probably cold and sensitive under his skin. After a couple minutes he was fine and relaxed.

What a great relief to have you all here! Thanks and I will report more updates soon.

Hey Patricia and Chance 💗

Great update 👍🏼 but I would add a word of caution, you don't want your boy to do too much too soon⛔️

You've got to reduce exercise to a minimum as least until stitches come out.

As for stairs reduce that to a minimum too !

All dogs do stairs, some are real masters (like Pofi) and others take forever (like my girl who negotiated her first wide step set of stairs yesterday at over 5 1/2 months after surgery)

Your boy looks very vigorous so I would bet he will master that in no time 💪🏽

Keep up the good work 🌹

Sending you a big hug and cuddles to your boy 😘😘😘🐾🐾🐶

Welcome home, Chance!!!! I'm so pleased things are going well. Ditto Eurydice, try to keep him as quiet as you can, just lots of rest and potty breaks for now. You may find he dips slightly around day 4 or 5, as the hospital meds leave his system. Not saying this to worry you, just so you know and don't panic if he seems a bit down. You may need to adjust his pain meds too, but right now it sounds like he's doing great!

We live on the second floor and he does great going up the stairs but is still apprehensive about going down. For those of you who have to deal with stairs, do they eventually get the hang of it? For now we are just taking it super slow and I have a towel around him for extra support.

Going down is harder for front leg tripawds, going up for rear leg ones. He will adjust, but this is VERY early days. Check the traction on the stairs. Are they slippery at all? If so, is there anything you can put on them (I realise this may be hard in an apartment building). Mine were wood, which was much too slippery, so I added pieces of carpet. Also, I would strongly recommend the ruffwear webmaster harness . This has a handle on the top, so you can give him some support on the stairs (and elsewhere if he needs it) and help him feel more secure.

Great that he's peed already too. Don't worry re the pooping. That may well take several days because of the anaesthetic and meds. He will poop in his own good time...poopicon_png

Well done, Patricia! You're doing a great job! Enjoy your snuggles with your boy, and keep the updates coming.

Eurydice did the stairs!!!!  Wow!!.   All of that exercise and muscle build on your exotic adventures is really helping her out.

Agree though that you have to be careful that Chance doesn't over do it - some of the younger dogs are prone to do so.   You also might see a bit of a crash around days 3 - 5 when the hospital meds wear off.  Just keep monitoring his pain, and if he seems to be in undue pain (paining, whining, restlessness, etc.) call your vet.   Many of us adjusted pain meds about this time.

DITTO EVERYONE!! And an extra YAY FOR PEE!!

Poop may take a couple of days du to meds, etc. Somlet is know when that happens. We celeb everything arpund here!poopicon_png

And yes, extra, extra caution with the stairs right now. It's a lot of strain on muscles and joints right now adjusting to three legs. Plus the incision stitches are still vulnerable. Your doing a great job with the sling.

What pain meds is he on? Also like the idea of being able to administer pain meds through a catheter to the incision.

Looking forward to more great updates!

Sounds really good so far!

Ditto everyone else on keeping him quiet and watching for an energy crash.

Stay positive and this recovery period will be over soon.  I have a feeling that your biggest problem is going to be keeping him quiet, the youngsters tend to bounce back really quickly.

Thanks for all the heads up on what to expect. He has been very good today about staying mellow. It's been nice being able to work at home and be with him. Not to mention staying on top of the meds schedule - that's a job, too! For pain he is on gabapentin, tramadol and metacam. Then taking cephalexin antibiotic for a week. The med going in through the catheter is bupivicaine -- so it keeps the area numbed. We finish with that by Monday. He seems comfortable now. Like I said the only thing he doesn't like is that initial administering of the catheter meds.

He did much better on going down the stairs this AM. Seemed less anxious about it. I'm so proud of how he is handling this so far! I will keep you all posted on progress.

Oh he is in a t-shirt instead of the cone of shame . He and I both prefer that and he isn't trying to get at the wound at all. Is icing or heat a good idea in these first few days?
