Hi everyone. I'm happy that I found this forum. It helps me to know that I'm not alone going through this. My 2 1/2 year old Shepherd Retriever mix named Chance was diagnosed on Monday with osteosarcoma in his front right shoulder. We are opting to do the operation for limb removal followed by chemo. I'm heartbroken because he is so young -- he still acts like a puppy! But I am trying to put aside my sad emotions and just enjoy the time we have. He is in good spirits and I am looking forward to getting rid of the main source of his discomfort - his shoulder. I was scared about doing it but after reading a lot of your stories, I am feeling more confident that he will be OK with three legs and that it will make him feel better in the end.

Thanks all for listening. Sad to be here but happy that I found a group of people who understand what my baby and I are going through!

Patricia and Chance, we're so glad you found us too. This is the club that nopawdy wants to join, but if you have to go through cancer, this community will be there for you every step of the way.

You're right, your doggie is so young! Cancer is something that surprises all of us when we hear the diagnosis for our cat or dog, but when it's a young dog, oh my gosh that's just a terrible shock. I can tell though that you have a GREAT attitude and you know how to Be More Dog . Chance will reflect your strength right back at you and together you two are an invincible, butt-kicking, cancer-fighting duo!

When will Chance's amputation happen? Do you have any questions for us? We're happy to try to answer them. Be sure to check out Jerry's Required Reading List and the Tripawds e-books if you haven't already, they're good resources to review before surgery day.

thanks, Jerry for the reply and for the links!

His surgery is scheduled for Monday, October 17th. I want to order the harness for him -- which one is best for a 70 pound dog? When making the appointment it finally 'feels real' and there is that little tinge of 'is this the right decision'? But he is such a happy spirit and I know he has more life to give this world!

I'm sure I will have more questions as I go along. So grateful that you are all here.

Hi!

Oh my, so young indeed! Well hopefully that will just mean Chance is in better shape for recovery :). I just found this site, following diagnosis this week, as well and have found it similarly helpful. There's tonnes of info and people are quick to respond to any anxious questions. Welcome, and I hope everything goes smoothly for you and your pal.

Hi Patricia and Chance ❤️🐾

I am sorry you have to join us but know you can count on us to help guiding you through your journey the best we can 🐾

My girl Eurydice is also a front leg amputee due to osteosarcoma, it's been over 5 months after surgery now and she is doing great.

I never, ever regreted having gone for amputation, she is still here and enjoys life to the full.

During the first couple of weeks after amputation she wore a soft harness over a t-shirt and after stitches came our I switched for a ruff wear harness which is just great as it has a handle that allow us to help our babies in and out of the car, lifting themselves from the floor if need be etc

Also terribly important to cover your floors if they are slippery as traction is a main problem with Tripawds.

We bought carpet and rubber underlay and made paths for Eurydice all over the house.

The first couple of weeks after surgery may be challenging, you have to remain calm, let Chance have lots and lots of rest, make sure he eats, drinks, pees and poops (that can take a while to happen) and take his medicine on time.

As for chemo, my girl did 6 sessions of carboplatin and had zero side effects, she sailed through it like a trooper as most dogs do.

I am so glad you decided to remove that painful shoulder, I bet Chance will surprise you at how quickly he can adjust on 3.

In the meantime lean on us and ask any questions, big or small, we are all by your side 💕

Sending lots of hugs and cuddles to your baby boy ❤️❤️❤️🐾🐾🐾😘🐶

Eurydice 77kg/170lb Great Dane limping end of April 2016, amputation (right front leg/osteosarcoma) 4 May 2016 6 courses of carboplatin followed by metronomic therapy, lung mets found 30 Nov 2016. 3 courses of doxorubicin, PET scan 26 Jan 2017 showed more mets so stopped chemo. Holistic route April 2017. Lung X-ray 5 May 2017 showed several tennis ball size mets, started cortisone and diuretics. Miss Cow earned her XXL silver wings 12 June 2017, 13 months and 1 week after amputation and 6 1/2 months after lung mets, she was the goofiest dawg ever and is now happily flying from cloud to cloud woof woofing away :-)

thanks so much for the replies!

I have actually moved up the date for Chance's surgery to October 12th. We are ready to just get RID of that painful shoulder!! I am still on the fence about the chemo. I had a bad experience with my previous dog on chemo and in hindsight would have rather had less time but more quality. Have ordered some supplements and have changed Chance's diet. Even have essential oils and crystals! 🙂

Thank you for the tips re: post-op. Luckily I have carpets everywhere in my house already except for the kitchen.

I'm sure I will be having trouble sleeping the night before surgery so will be checking in here with more posts!

xoxo

Well done getting the surgery moved to an early date!

As for chemo, it is not compulsory and in any case there are no guarantees either way.

I am just curious, was your other dog given carboplatin?

Apparently this is the best of the 3 chemo options, it's the one with fewer side effects, I gave my girl nausea pills for 3 days after chemo and she always was as good as gold.

I am not advocating it, though, this is a totally personal choice.

And you must concentrate on the surgery, not on anything else, for now.

Glad to hear you have carpets, that is just ideal big-blink

Sending you a big, big hug and cuddles to your cutie heart

Hi Eurydice --

My other dog had lymphoma and was given four different types of chemo drugs cycled through two times every week. So totally different cancer, totally different drugs. Once we get through our surgery on Wednesday and heal up from that I am meeting with a Holistic vet. I may still consider trying one round of chemo and see how he does and go from there. I'm just so worried about him having any type of side effect. You're right, for now I will just focus on getting my little guy thru the surgery heart

If anyone has any advice for the night before surgery and the day of while he's at the hospital I would appreciate it! I'm starting to feel anxious. How do I stay calm and focused and positive?

Hi Patricia and Chance🐾❤️

Oh, I see ... as you say totally different cancer totally different drugs ... for osteo Chance would only take 1 type of chemo every 3 weeks for 4 to 6 sessions, not a combination of drugs.

I tell you what I've done the night before surgery, I snuggled up with my girl and hugged her all night long 💕💕💕

The day he is at the hospital try and rest (easier said than done) because you will surely be sleep deprived for a while during the first stages of recovery.

Staying calm is not always easy but you must do it for Chance's sake. He will pick up on your energy and if you are stressed out and sad so will he be.

Just stay close to Chance, talk to him and let him rest as much as he wants.

If at some point you get overwhelmed, leave the room for a minute, breathe and come back with a smile for your boy.

Be prepared for the fact his first outings for peeing and pooping are very, very short so do not focus on how long the walks were or how energetic he used to be compared to now.

He will improve as the days/weeks go by.

In fact, some of our dogs here are so energetic that even during the first stages of recovery pawrents are worried with their excessive energy levels.

In my case (and Eurydice being a huge dog🐘) the first weeks were very hard as she had trouble moving around until stitches came out.

Be prepared for a possible crash between days 3-5 as the medicine gets out of his system, this is normal.

There may also be a lot of panting and restlessness due to the medicine he will need to take.

I was sent a photo of Eurydice sitting after surgery a couple of days before picking her up and that helped me to adjust.

They shave a huge amount of fur so the incision looks enormous but remember not to look at it, as Sally says, when you pick him up, look into his eyes and tell him what a good boy he is and hug him and kiss him 💗💗💗💗💗 be happy together.

I took a t-shirt with me when I picked Eurydice up and that was a good move as it protects the incision and gave me time to adjust.

You may have doubts at some point about your decision to amputate and may think he will not forgive you for removing his leg, lots of us went through that to a bigger or smaller extent at some stage.

Just remember you are removing his pain and letting him have a new life with you, a really, really HAPPY pain free life ❤️❤️❤️

We are all here for you, sweet Patricia, so do not think twice in asking anything at all and please keep us updated about Chance's progress.

You can do this and so can Chance !

Sending you an avalanche of kisses and cuddles to your cutie pie 😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘🐾🐾🐶

Thank you eurydice for your lovely reply! It made me feel a lot more at ease. My job is luckily going to let me work from home for the first week and a half post surgery so I will be smothering him with lots of love and kisses and snuggles!

That is perfect Patricia 👍🏼 make sure you get some chicken breasts to serve him at meal times 🍴🍴🍴 as an extra treat during recovery 🍖🍖🍗 I alternated between grilled chicken and boiled chicken with olive oil added to the water for extra flavour 🍲

Chance is such a lucky boy to have Mom around for 1 1/2 weeks after surgery 🐾🐾💖

Sending you lots and lots and lots of hugs and tummy rubs to your sugar pie ❤️❤️❤️🐾🐶

Hi Patricia and Chance,

Gosh, what a lovely looking dog! I love the head tilt and the earsheartheartheart

If anyone has any advice for the night before surgery and the day of while he's at the hospital I would appreciate it! I'm starting to feel anxious. How do I stay calm and focused and positive?

You're bound to be stressing about tomorrow. That's totally understandable, but as Eurydice says, try to focus on the fact that you are getting rid of his pain. It's a great thing you are doing for him. Osteosarcoma is very painful and he's going to be feeling a whole lot better soon.

So much of this journey is about learning to live in the present moment, and grab your enjoyment. That's what Chance is doing. Have yourselves some treats tonight. Spoil him rotten and spoil yourself too. Cuddles and tummy rubs galore. Don't waste this evening worrying about tomorrow.

When Chance is at the hospital, try to keep busy however you can. I found it hard to concentrate on mentally demanding work, but being physically busy, sorting the house, shopping for treats, or things we'd need once Meg came home helped to stop me from sitting home fretting.

Most importantly, lean on us! There is so much experience in this community and such wonderful, supportive people. Stay connected. We're here for you and will be with you and Chance every step of the way.

All best,

Meg and Clare (and Elsie Pie) xxx

Thank you Meg, Clare and Elsie! Wow, all the way from London!

It breaks my heart that there are so many of us going through this but reading all of the posts does help me feel less scared and definitely not alone. I have learned so much from Chance just in the past week. When I am at work I get worried, sad, angry, stressed about all of this that is happening to him. But as soon as I see him when I get home all of that just vanishes! He is such a happy boy and it's his bravery and positive attitude that is going to get us through this.

Tonight is a playdate with his friend Frieda and his brother Bear then drinks afterwords at one of his favorite dog friendly bars big-blink

What a sweet boy! Hang in there. The next few days will likely be tough, but you'll be over the worst of it before you can believe it. Harry is on day five and each day I've felt a bit more like "this is going to be ok" and today - though he still has healing up to do and some strength to build - I really feel thankful that we got rid of what was an increasingly painful and poisonous limb and that he is still here and has a positive future left, and I'm feeling more optimistic than worried. Finally. This time next week you wont believe how far you have come.

Sending well wishes for tomorrow!big-blink
