My 12 year old boxer broke his leg in 2 places 10 days ago. First dr in vet group suggested surgery, but said cast should work for healing due to my cost concern. The bone is broken straight across so part of the bone is laying on top of the other. Cast has to be changed weekly. Went to 3rd dr yesterday to get cast redone and fixed because the second one slipped out of place. She said cast wouldn't help. He needed surgery. Second dr had said if cast doesn't work, amputate may be an option. This third dr said he needed a plate to set the bone. When I told her my concerns about cost and questions of amputate I felt like I had said something wrong. She's concerned of amputation because of his age. He is in perfect health and not overweight.

What do I do?? I've stumbled across this page and have learned so much already. I'm trying to figure out how to attach a pic of xray

Here are detailed instructions for adding photos to forum posts . If you don't already share photos online somewhere, you can upload them to your blog. Need further help? Post in the Tech Support forum and we'll be happy to help!

That'll work...upload the photos to your blog (or share them somewhere you can grab the image URL) and you can easily add them to your forum posts here. FYI: When using the Insert Media button, the image URL must end in a valid image file format (e.g.; .jpg, .png. etc).

PS: Ouch!

My dog is 12.5 yrs old and had his leg amputated 4 days ago. It was causing him significant pain due to a joint/bone infection that we couldn't get rid of. Like your dog, my dog was healthy and a good weight. For me it was about ensuring he was as pain free as possible for how ever many days he had left. So far he's done REALLY well.

I guess if it were me, I would ask how much pain my dog would potentially be in and what the possibility would be of needing to amputate in the future. I would also consider my dog's breed and life expectancy. It may sound callous (not meant to be), but it would impact my choice of treatments.

Good luck to you! And I hope you come back to let us know how your dog is doing.

If you are considering amputation, it might make sense to consult with a surgeon who does lots of amputations.  Many vets just do not see as many, and cannot always analyze how a dog might do on 3.  And most dogs do great!

Otis - 106 pound lab/Dane mix, lost his right front leg to osteosarcoma on Febuary 9, 2016.  Four rounds of carboplatin completed in April, 2016.  Lung mets August 25, 2016.  Said goodbye too soon on September 4, 2016.   Lost his adopted sister, Tess, suddenly on October 9, 2016. likely due to hemangiosarcoma.

Wherever they are, they are together.
