Thanks all.  No blood from the actual stitches.  Will use a bit of neosporin.  I can tell he is getting more and more itchy as he tries to get to licking more and more.  He is wearing a t-shirt...he has licked the t-shirt a touch...just a few licks until I can move his head away...at least the t-shirt is getting the lick and not the stitches.

Not a vet and not giving Vet advice. From what you've described, I would just use a warm towel for now and stay away from any product.

Guess it depends on the vet. Here is what our fairy vet mother Dr. Pam says in this post "Is it safe to use neosporin on dogs?" I personally don't like the thought of my dog possibly ingesting anything that wasn't created specifically for animals, so I stick with products created for the veterinary community for wound care.

I have never had a problem using Neosporin on dogs although I tend to prefer Silvadene because it absorbs better and has a better spectrum of activity.  Do not use an ointment on the incision until the sutures are out unless your vet tells you otherwise since it may delay healing or affect absorption of SQ sutures.

Thanks Jerry.  We also have a product called Vetericyn which is a topical application for wound care.  Safe if licked.  Might consider using after stitches are out if needed.

We love Vetericyn, it's the one product line we use on Wyatt Ray for situations like this, hot spots, etc.

the area between one of our stitches appears to want to give a drop of blood every so often, particularly if he moves, stretches or gets up to go outside.  Try to keep it clean with a damp towel.  Dont think it is anything serious but will keep an eye on it to make sure the skin actually bonds together like it should.  The rest of the wound looks pretty good with the exception of some dried blood...dont want to clean it off and disrupt the healing at this stage.

I am wondering if the licking is it tingling?  Itchy from healing or even the nerve endings.  Is he on Gabapentin?  Deb & Bandit

No telling.  He is not on gabapentin, just tramadol. smileyI figured any itching or desire to lick at this point is most likely from the hair growing back.  Today he has not had alot of urge to lick...which is good.  The vet said that the spotting of blood could be where the stitch may have nicked a blood vessel, when he moves it could produce a touch of blood.  They suggested a bit of super glue along the edge where the fold of skin from the incision is, then just a gentle pressure to ensure it will make the blood clot instead of ooze.  Will see how it goes.  Otherwise all is good...I have been ensuring he has been getting alot of rest the last couple of days.

We are exactly one week post op and still doing great.  Pain is under control and spirits are up.  Stitches come out Monday.  Will wait a few days afterwards to get into the bath for a much needed freshening up.  He cant wait to get back out to the pond for some good swimming time.  So far so good.big-grin

Yeah...Tungsten got his stitches out today and everything looks good.  His only restrictions at this time are no swimming or baths for two days, and try to keep the licking at a minimum.  Otherwise he has the docs blessing to do all the other playing he wants to.  He is a happy boy.clap

Pawesome! big-grin Just be sure to take things one day at a time, focus on core strengthening, and work in rehab exercises before overdoing it too soon. Remember: Walks do not build strength, only endurance. Find lots of tips regarding the amount and type of exercise recommended for new Tripawds in Loving Life On Three Legs , or consider consulting with a CCRT or CCRP for a professional opinion...that's why we created The Maggie Moo Fund for Tripawd Rehab.

Thanks everybody.  He is a happy boy. Will be working to keep his conditioning up....nice thing is he is only 5yr old and very strong.  His balance is great as well.

Hi all...it has been about a month now since Tungsten's amputation...he is doing fabulous.  He is getting back into the swing of things.  I have noticed however he likes to sleep in more in the mornings.  He is a bit slow to get up (probably from over playing), so he might need a good leg massage or something....maybe some heat therapy in his remaining rear leg.  My husband tends to play with the pups for a long time and they are too stubborn to give up.  I think he tires more so now than he used to, but I'm sure it is a lot more work to play on 3 legs.  Otherwise he is pretty much back to the same boy...playing ball, swimming, jumping on the couch, running into the kitchen for treat time, lining up for breakfast and dinner, eating everything in his bowl.  Still doesnt sit down (and we dont force it) as I figure either it will come with time or he will just not do it at all.  So all in all he is doing well, and we hope we can enjoy his company for years to come.

Cheers,

Barb and Tungsten
