we are two weeks post op from a synovial sarcoma diagnosis. the full leg was sent to pathology, but the results are inconclusive. there is no sign of cancer in his lymphnodes (yay!), however the cells are multiplying quickly, a sign it may be histiocytic. there is no sign of cancer in his blood, and his chest and lung x-rays are clear.

does anyone have any experience with this?

I do!

Murphy had his right front leg removed due to a tumor that they suspected was osteosarcoma.  It took a couple of weeks for the final pathology to come back, but it was histiocytic sarcoma.  The lymph node they removed was positive.  When we met with oncology, they told me that he was CD 18 +, so the chemo that was recommended was CCNU, which is oral.  1 treatment every 3 weeks for 6 treatments.  His prognosis was 12-18 months, if we were lucky.  He also took denamarin during his treatment to protect his liver.  He had a CBC the day of treatment, then another the following week.

When he finished treatment, they found what they thought was another tumor, on his left shoulder blade.  We chose not to do another type of chemo.  His follow-up a few months later showed clear lungs and no change in the tumor.  A few months later, the same thing.  It's now been 3 years and Murphy still has clear lungs and whatever is on his shoulder hasn't grown.  He's still bouncing around, chasing squirrels and being himself!

His original oncologist actually published a study on histiocytic sarcoma, Dr. Barbara Kitchell.  She moved to New Mexico during his treatment, but Michigan State University continued her protocol.

Feel free to message me!

I agree, celebrate all that GREAT NEWS!

Cancer teaches us to go with the flow, to take every day for the gift that it is. I know it's hard when you have potential bad news looming over you, and when you've paid good money to get solid answers, but do your best to remember that your pup is right here with you, and isn't worrying about the future.

And thanks for sharing Donna! I would love to publish your story in the News blog so it's easy to reference. Would happen to have a link to Dr. Kitchell's study? She has quite a background! I can't find her study on histiocytic sarcoma but just found an informative paper she published, "New Chemotherapy Agents in Veterinary Medicine," which discusses

  • Ifosfamide
  • Paclitaxel (Taxol)
  • Gemcitabine
  • Vinorelbine
  • Temozolomide
  • Masitinib
  • Toceranib

Here's a link to her study:  https://www.res.....ic_sarcoma

It's a lot to try to read through lol  I was trying to read some of it.  What I do get is that Murphy has survived longer than any of the dogs in their study!  heart

Of course you can publish his story!  I think I have the whole thing written out in his blog.
