Hi everyone thanks so much for all your good wishes for honey. She has been so down in herself for the past two days. Hardly moving from her resting area. She looks so sad. It is 6 days post surgery today and she finished her meds yesterday. She is getting round fine. She hates the cone so at her check up yesterday asked the vet for an alternative so now we have a nappy strapped over the wound and a t-shirt over that as she was licking a lot. She still has to keep the dreaded cone on at night. Can anyone tell me is this depressed state she's in normal. She's off her food but will take treats. Thanks.

Good morning Honey

is it already six days that you have been home?!

Yes, it is normal for dogs (and cats) to have a time that they appear ‘depressed’ after surgery. It is usually a medication thing... sometimes too much and sometimes not enough... this probably doesn’t help you much, but the main things are that she is drinking, peeing, and eating. (small amounts at least) Going poo is usually a celebratory thing around here!

If Honey has just come off her meds and is acting ‘depressed’ for too long, you might want to talk to your vet about more meds or different ones. For Stewie it was about 4-5 days that he went downhill a bit, but it was due to a seroma (fluid build up). He had to get his incision drained and he was in discomfort because of it. He didn’t want to move very far and eating was a hand to mouth situation.

As has been pointed out to me a few times, if they are licking, it is probably because they are in pain. Every dog is different though and it takes time for them to adjust. Pain meds and sometimes the lack there of can mess with a dogs brain. I’m sure others will chime in when they can and offer you there experiences and thoughts on Honeys progress.

You really are doing a great job of looking after your little girl. The worst will be over soon, I promise!

If you start a blog (which is really easy and a lot of fun!) you can download pictures into your media library and then share them with us here. Jerry shared the khow to’ link on the previous page. I had to resize my pics in order for them to show up properly and not be distorted. Would love to see pictures. By the way, if you do start a blog, be sure to come back here and share the link with us...

All the best, Petra and her Clan ❤️

Yeah, just want to ditto revisiting being back in pain meds!  This IS MAJOR SURGERY and it hurts!!  You aren't seeing depression"...most likely seeing her coping with recovery from surgery and, apparently, without pain meds now.  OW!

Honey  is resting and that is EXACTLY what she needs ro do!

Feed her warmedxhixken...try Fresh Pet (refrigerated section in dog food)....grilled cheese sandwich....bacon and eggs...cheeseburgers......anything she will eat.  You can focus more on proper nutrition later.

How 'bout drinking?   Glad that she's mobile, that's really good.

WHAT'S YOUR ENERGY LIKE AROUND HONEY??   She needs you to be strong and confident  and high energy.

Does she have a special friend she likes?  Have them come over and knock on the door happily while calling her name.  Have them bring her a cheeseburger.  You might see her perk up then! 🙂

Recovery is hard.  Six days is STILL very early from major surgery.  It took me three weeks before I could say I did this FOR my Happy Hannah and not TO her!   You'll get there soo !

Stay connected!  We understand!

Hugs

Hi everyone thanks so much. My baby honey is a bit happier now. I set up a blog called honeys journey but you'll have to bear with me as I'm not great with the tech side and resizing photos etc.

Awww look at that pretty girl! So happy you figured out how to add photos. If you ever have questions about your blog just private message me or post in Tech Support OK?

You've already received such great advice here and I"m so glad she's doing better. I'll just reiterate that we really do set the tone for their recovery. The more you can be upbeat and not baby her, the more she will reflect confidence and happiness. I know you can do it!

Keep up the great work and let us know how she's doing.

Honey is doing great this morning. 8 days post surgery. She's back on her food and we had a little walk earlier and she was dying to get moving. She's strong lady and it was hard to keep her from dragging me on the leash. She loved being back outdoors and have a really good sniff at all the plants and trees. I know she would love to get into the field with those cows but that's not happening for a while😄20171103_084211.jpgImage Enlarger

Hi HoneyB due to have her stitches out in the morning. In the middle of her wound it seems very red so hope all goes well and there's no infection. She very quiet tonight so hoping she is not in any pain. Will keep you updated.

We'll keep our paws crossed for a good vet visit tomorrow. Try not to worry, oftentimes incision lines can have more redness than we expect. Is there any discharge or odor? Is it warm to the touch? If not, it's probably fine. Your vet will know though.
