Oh my gosh never feel bad about posting multiple updates in a day, we're all waiting to hear what's going on. I'm encouraged by your last one, it does sound like he might be responding to the care. And I REALLY like Katy's suggestion to give him a break and take him outside for a bit just to hang out. Clinics and hospitals are depressing when you're sick, for dogs and humans alike. I'm thinking that could really help perk his spirits up.

Does your vet have others there who s/he can consult with? Getting multiple opinions is so helpful at a time like this.

Lots of hugs coming your way, please keep us posted OK?

I agree...if he is stable, we are getting him out of the hospital ASAP and I like the ideas of the previous poster.  We will get him home to see if we can get him to eat.  It is just so out of character for him....being a golden retreiver he has a larger than life attitude and that in certainly the case when it comes to eating (especially things he should not eat).  As for multiple opinions...the entire staff there in looking into his case as there are 5 vets there.  They are all just shocked that if it is cancer causing the symptoms/fever, how quickly it came on.  They all think it is something else but they are just not sure...

Oh I'm glad that the practice is a large one, it's so good to have multiple vets there to discuss odd cases like this. We're all hoping for great news so he can come home!

well I am picking him up today after work to take him home.  Apparently his fever is gone now and his energy level is up...the only problem is that he is not eating.  We are going to try to cook him something to eat that will hopefully be appealing.  He usually likes to serve as a vacuum to my two boys (2 and 5) at the dinner table.  We are supposed to have grilled chicken tonight so I will see if that peaks his interest...I just hope that he will eat something.  I guess we will see tonight but I am so happy to have him home...I have not slept well in the past 4-5 nights as Rusty usually sleeps at the foot of our bed

I am so hoping sweet Rusty gets back to his happy, feisty, food-munching, loving Golden self.......these bumps are hard, but truly sending lots of prayers your way, and super positive thoughts to help him and you through this. So glad he will be coming home, and I am right there with you, on the sleeping at the bottom of the bed at your feet thing.......

Continuing to keep you in my thoughts,
Love,

YAAAAAAAAAY !!!!!!!! WE LOVE HOMECOMINGS AROUND HERE!!! AND WE LOVE THAT RUSTY IS FEELING BETTER!!

now, if he doesn't eat right away it may just be due to all the stress of being in the hospital, coming home and getting settled in.grilled chicken from the family table certainly should help.

I know you will have a lot on your plate tonight, pun intended, but please update us as soon as you can! We've got all paws crossed for your
sweet boy and we are just thrilled that he is over this hump!

pictures please!! Please!!!

hugs to all!

Well we have rusty home...our boys love seeing him but it is ripping my heart out. He is not himself...just a shadow of the dog that he once was. He did eat so maybe he will have more energy tomorrow but as of ow he won't even move. This is no life...he sees my wife and I crying and he just smiles at us but the look in his eyes shows the pain he must be in at this time. It reminds me of watching my father die of cancer some years back like ripping a scab off a wound too early.

I saw it in my vets eyes when I picked him up that it was not good....he gave me his after hours schedule for the weekend in case I need to bring him in...how do you know when he has had enough? Is lying prone all day a quality of life that we should try to prolong? He has always been strong for me through the years and I need to be strong for him but it Is so damn hard....

Its a shock to hear cancer, especially one as fast moving as osteosarcoma.  My boy, Tucker, was diagnosed

on April 27 2014.  He became a tripawd on May 1.  As there were no detectable cancer in the lungs we also have done the

chemo.  Within in weeks of the amputation, he was completely mobile.  I was amazed at how

quickly he recovered.  He has finished his chemo.  He never had any adverse reactions at all.  So far so good.  I have to

remind myself that he is still not cured.  Tucker is an 11 year old hound mix.  It is  terrible decision to make and there are

no guarantees.  Good luck.

Be strong. I know it's hard but just remember that he will look to you for guidance. All dogs want a pack leader, someone to show them that things will be fine. That's your most important job especially now. Try not to cry in front of him, go outside or in another room, it makes such a difference when you are present and in the moment with him, not focused on the what ifs.

This is when you take things day by day and tomorrow is a new one. It's very hard for humans. I hope with all my might that things get better. Please come to the chat room in the evenings if you want to talk OK? There's some of us in there now.

Rusty had a restless night...since he can't get up and move I spent the night with him in the floor. He did get up by himself once or twice but he would take two steps and collapse. He would not eat and this morning he has vomited a few times. I cancelled all of my afternoon surgeries (I am a periodontist) as I want to spend some time with him but if has not made improvements we are going to meet with the vet. If he won't eat I don't know what to do...our across the street neighbor how loves rusty and has a dog is going to keep him this morning...we are hoping that peer pressure from another dog may inspire him to get up and go...

Here is a pic of Rusty in the front yard with the boys...they did not want to leave his side.  My five year old is so attached to Rusty and he is so sorry he is sick.  I had to take a picture this morning though it makes me really sad...This is where Rusty lays outside except now he won't get up

Rusty is really a beautiful guy, I was so hoping her would be much better this morning.......my heart goes out to your sweet little boys and the rest of your family. This journey is definitely NOT an easy one, and we have all been there when dealing with uncertain circumstance. My only advice, is to monitor Rusty for the next day or two, and evaluate at that point. The MOST important thing to remember, is Rusty's quality of life........decisions are very, very hard, but don't give up immediately, just see how he does for a bit. He will let you know when he is done......as hard as it is to come to terms with, he will let you know.

Keeping you in my thoughts and prayers,
Bonnie & Angel Polly

What a sweet photo. How is he doing today? Did the neighbor's dog lift his spirits?

Unfortunately no...in fact he got worse today,,,he started vomiting/coughing up blood and refused to move...he urinated on himself several times this afternoon so my wife and I decided it was time...rusty earned his wings at 445 pm

Words can not describe my pain but I want everyone here to know how much your words and encouragement have meant, he is running free and the cancer is gone...he will be cremated and we will re-take possession of him next week and we plan to use his ashes to plant a tree in iur yard. I will post some pics of him and make a rainbow bridge post when I have the heart...right now I just can't stop the hurt nor do I want to...he is worth every tear

Ohhhhhh no! My heart just breaks for you and your family, I am really, really sorry. How we had hoped that he would pull through, it just isn't fair. You all tried so very hard, please know that your courageous choice to help free Rusty of his pain was the right thing, I know we would have felt the same way if we were in such a heartbreaking situation. It's just so hard to do, and to go through the grief. We all understand that. If you want to talk, to celebrate his life when you are ready, never forget that we are here for you.

Lots and lots of hugs coming your way.

I am so heartbroken to read this right now.......please know you did everything you could for your beautiful boy. The pain I know, is immense, but hopefully time will ease your pain and many happy memories will remain forever. Yes, he is pain free now, and loving his life over the Bridge with so many brave Tripawd heros, including my precious girl Polly, and he is definitely worth every single tear. Post more when you can.......when you are ready.....

Keeping you and your family in my thoughts and prayers, for peace in your hearts......
