Hi Nancy and Tucker,

I just wanted to send you some supportive vibes, as I'm sure you are feeling nervous about tomorrow. How could you not be? But it also seems to me that you are as prepared as you can be and I am certain you're going to manage just fine. It will be tough bringing Tucker home that night, but we will be here to support you both, and the great thing is, after all this time waiting for a diagnosis and trying to decide what's best to do, once the leg is gone, you can put that behind you and look forward to helping Tucker recover and enjoy a quality pain-free life. I honestly think the thought of it is often worse than having to deal with the practical realities. You're going to be just fine.

BTW, have you had a look at some of the post surgery pics on this site? I found that really helpful, so when I saw my Meg it really wasn't a shock, I knew exactly what to expect.

I plan to learn how to "Be More Dog " this evening.

This made me chuckle. We're almost eight months post amp and I'm definitely still a work in progress. To think our dogs don't even have to try, just comes to them natural as breathing.

Sending hugs,

Meg and Clare (and Elsie Pie) xxx

Welcome, doodlemom!

My dog Chance just had his amputation on October 12th. I know (as everyone here does) how you are feeling. The lead-up to the surgery is actually more stressful than the surgery itself. My boy walked out wagging his tail to greet me the day after surgery!

hugs to everyone!

-Patricia and Chance

Good morning! My stomach is in knots this morning so it's great timing to read about Chance wagging his tail to greet you the next morning! With all the support here I'm feeling much more confident than I was a couple of days ago.

Congrats on it being stitches removal day! That's the day I'm most looking forward to right now.big-blink

Have a great day!

I would just add some here got their babies to wear boxer shorts to protect the incision (tail got through the fly)
You can do this and do can Tucker, recovery doesn't last for ever, your boy is going to enjoy life to the full, you'll see ☺️
Sending you lots of pawsitive energy and lots of cuddles to your cutie pie 😘💕🐾💞

Good Morning! I LOVE the hint about the boxer shorts! I hadn't seen that one and it is one I will definitely be using - thank you! And, thank you for reminding me that the recovery doesn't last forever.big-blink Nancy and Tucker

Good Morning! The whole tone of your email gave me a strong "I can do this" feeling, so thanks for the supportive vibes! I feel like I have this whole new support system out there giving me strength.

I haven't looked at pictures yet - great suggestion and I will do so today.

Thanks again, Nancy and Tucker

Hi Nancy and Tucker from another Nancy!

My Fionn is 3 weeks out from front amputation (lots of amps this monthsad). I blogged every day for the first 2 weeks and there are almost daily pictures of his incision. Hopefully, there will be something in there that will be helpful! His surgery was done at a vet school so he spent the first night there, but was home less than 24 hrs post op. Honestly, they are less stressed at home, just make sure you have help. Getting in and out of a vehicle was hard the first few days. Glad you got a sling!

Virtual belly rubs and kisses and best wishes for a speedy recovery for Tucker!  heart

Hi everyone! I hope this is the right place to post an update.

It's Saturday afternoon - 2 days post op and everything is going so much better than expected!! As you know, our vet's office is not staffed at night so we ended up bringing Tucker home 7 hours after surgery. That was an EXTREMELY difficult night, not because of the surgery itself but due to the reaction from the heavy meds. He was much better after the meds got through his system in the morning, however, we took him back to the vet so that we could get some sleep after being up the entire night. We picked him up again about 2:00 p.m. that afternoon and he came out so excited, almost running to us. We got home and he immediately went outside (leash only - no need for a sling) and went pee and poo (the two things I worried endlessly about). He went inside - drank a bowl of water, ate his normal kibble along with a scrambled egg and went to sleep. My oldest son said "Wow look at him. He's the same Tucker we took to the vet for surgery yesterday but without 1 leg. It's like he's always lived with only three." Such a true statement.  We had a good night last night and an uneventful day today so definitely no complaints here. He came home with a drain which, happily, will be taken out tomorrow. Not a fan of the drain. While I know there will still be ups and downs, I am so thankful we ultimately chose to amputate and let our boy live pain free!

I want to sincerely thank this Tripawd community that we are now a part of because honestly I don't know that I would've followed through with the surgery if it weren't for all of you! When I received all the responses here after my post, I knew that every one of you who said you'd be there for me really meant it. Thanks to all of you - our new family!
