Hi, I am very new here, and just wondering if any of you have had experience with your dog being diagnosed with a nerve sheath tumor close to the vertebrae (but not on or in it yet) and amputation. Researching online has been discouraging, and I am looking for the reality of the situation before I put my beloved dog through amputation. It sounds like it is the only choice, and i am ok with the amputation part, but if you had this done, how has your dog's recovery been? Have you had any NST's come back, and if so, can they be treated? How about radiation? I am not really wanting to do radiation, but it is listed as a recommended treatment from the vet. Any insight will be helpful..Thanks so much…

I know I've heard it mentioned before, so I ran a search and I think if you follow this link you should be able to get to the results too: http://tripawds…..8;search=1

(I searched "nerve sheath tumor", setting it to search all forums, post content and titles, and match the entire phrase)

Looks like a bunch of stories to sift through.  And if you interested in asking people more questions about their experience with a nerve sheath tumor, try clicking on that "send pm" button you should see above their post either in addition to or instead of adding a post to their thread.  Sometimes that's more effective in getting people's attention than just adding a post to their thread.  Good luck!

Hi Happy, thanks for joining us (sorry you had to!). As GerrysMom showed you, there have been other Tripawds here with Nerve Sheath Tumors and I'm sure at least a couple can give you direct advice too.

Does your vet think your dog is a good candidate for amputation? What kind of dog is s/he? Is your vet recommending radiation over amputation? Each dog's story is so different, but what I can tell you is that of the dogs who do lose a limb, most do just fine after surgery.

It's better to hop on three legs than to limp on four.™

I don't know much about Nerve Sheath Tumor….my dog has osteosarcoma.  But I will say, I did the same thing with researching on the internet and came up with a lot of negative stories.  For this reason we decided not to amputate for months.  We just thought that amputation and chemo was too much for our dog to handle.  Well, at the very last minute we changed our minds.  We amputated and are in the process of Chemo.  I wish I would have just amputated sooner.  My dog Levi is sooooo much happier without that leg and he does everything that he did on 4 legs.  We are only 6 weeks post -op.  The chemo has had no side effects at all.  We really couldn't be happier with our choice.  I know not everyone has the same results but I was very cautious of amputation at the beginning and now I am a strong believer it's the right thing to do (Obviously, as long as your vet thinks he is a good canditate too).  I guess what I'm trying to say is try not to base your decision on the internet (this site excluded :) ) and just go with your gut feeling of what's right for your dog.  That's what I wish i would have done…

Levi was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma 7-7-11 Ampuversary 10-14-11 Lung Mets Discovered 1-4-12. Chemo seemed to not be working so we switched to Artemisinin and other supplements. So far so good...
