First, let me say I'm very sorry about your sister Kerren.  I lost my sister to colon cancer almost 15 years ago and it was really hard, but we did everything we could to live and laugh during her journey.

Dave,

I posted earlier and have recently read your post about waiting a week before doing the amputation.  Honestly, My Sweet Ted is MY dog.  We all love him but he is mine and I am his.... having said that, I don't know that I would schedule surgery and let my husband and a friend take care of him.  No offense to them at all but I would be a wreck and second guess every little thing that might go wrong.  Sorry - being honest here.  I do think that part of your struggle is the fact that you are going to be gone for a week.  If it were me, I would make sure he is kept as safe as can be from breaking the bone while I was gone and I would schedule the surgery for a time when I could commit 100% to his recovery (within a week or two).  I am not a vet - just giving my opinion.  I will say that I delayed Ted's surgery by almost a week so that my family vet, who I trust and respect, would be doing his surgery and not an "unknown" person to me.  I'm sorry if I have added to your stress but I'm honest to a fault...

Thank you mysweetieted for your advice. We have decided to move the surgery to this Thursday so I will be home for the first two days. I do however trust my wife to be here and take the brunt of the healing with our friend. She is actually the best dog person I know of and am sure she will be more througho than I could ever be. Her love for our boys is beyond caring.

Again thank you all for your caring thoughts and wishes.  We are heading out to find some non slip floor runners so he will not lose any confidence while learnlng to get around again on three legs.  We are also looking at harnesses and do have questions as to what would be best for our boy during recovering. As we have not done this before I am looking for suggestions on what to get. Also we will need to look into swimming help after he is back on his feet. I anxiously await everyone's thoughts.

Dave, I'm just now able to read this topic you started and am so glad you came over here to do so.

When it comes to amputation, we humans fret about it so much more than the dog or cat. They just want to feel better, but we worry worry worry. We love them so much, how can we not? But as you go through this remember, you set the tone for recovery, even from afar if you're out of town. Stay optimistic, hoppy and hopeful and he will too. I know you can do it!

Yeah I'd take it easy from now on until he's recovered. Dogs hide pain so well, they just want to please their pack. You'll have lots more swim sessions when he's all healed up. Stay patient, focused and you'll all get there together.

Let your wife and friend know we're here to help if they need anything. We'll all be thinking of you this week.

Thanks Jerry for that. I know he will do well as he is already practicing which is our sign we are making the right decision. Now to get over my stupid human motions and prepare for the job on hand.

Hi,

Milo is front left amputation on July 28.  He's doing great and hopped all over Petco yesterday and up and down stairs at Grammies, and ran like a crazy dog to go see a neighbor last night.

We bought a ruffwear harness . We found one used on Amazon and saved about  $15-20 over buying new, but the price new would have been worth it. Because of his incision, we only used it rarely the first 2 weeks, but needed it to get him down the stairs, and in and out of the car and truck. He did upstairs on his own on day 4, unsupervised.  Darn dog!  I suspect we will always use it for outings, and getting in and out of cars.  We don't want him to injure his remaining front leg with an awkward jump.

We already had a raised food dish. Watching him drink or eat from a dish on the grounday recently... that's a must for our guy.

We bought big 2' x 12' strips of carpet off the big rolls at Home Depot.  It cost <$15 a piece for decent looking berber that hides dog mess. We also bought a 4' strip to make area rugs by his favorite doors.

We bought him a new bed.  His was a big soft bed with a bolster 2/3 of the way around. It was a tripping hazard. We chose a memory foam bed from dogbeds4less.  I appreciated it when I found myself fretting and curling up next to him at night sometimes.  The first 5 days we actually put mattresses from our guest room on the living room floor so we could be nearby.

We tried booties.  He slips alot on linoleum tile floors, e.g., groomers, vets, stores.  He's fine at our house and outside. The boots were hilarious!  He lifted his feet high like a Clydesdale, including his one front hopping leg.  We laughed so hard!  We settled for socks with anti-skid pattern on the bottom.  They'll be useless outside, but should work for limited inside use.

And food and supplements!  We aren't doing chemo for a few reasons, but are focusing on diet, nutrition, and supplements.  There are a zillion believers out there.  We chose a few to hopefully keep his world and our world sane.

Sorry you have to travel, but that's part of life. There is never a perfect time for something like this. I had a major design review at the office on Day 4.  I had a college kid watch him a few times the first week while I went to work. All was fine.  With the internet, texts, photos, phones -- all will be fine. My husband had to travel overseas on week 3.  Milo was slumping and struggling when he left town, but was awesome, amazing, and jumping all over when he returned.

My best advice to you.... keep using this forum. These people helped us so much when we had set backs or questions. I am certain they will,be here for you and Mr. Gibbs, too.

Peace,

Jenifer & Milo

We are also big fans of the Ruffwear Webmaster Plus harness, see the gear blog for more info on it.  It enabled me to gently assist Otis to get up, or jump out of the car, without any straps digging into his body.  He loved it, and could do all of his normal doggy things, including roll, in it.  The gear blog also has a flotation vest - we didn't get it, since the only water we are around is Otis' baby wading pool, but you might want to look at it when the time comes.

Otis - 106 pound lab/Dane mix, lost his right front leg to osteosarcoma on Febuary 9, 2016.  Four rounds of carboplatin completed in April, 2016.  Lung mets August 25, 2016.  Said goodbye too soon on September 4, 2016.   Lost his adopted sister, Tess, suddenly on October 9, 2016. likely due to hemangiosarcoma.

Wherever they are, they are together.

Yes, that vest is what Meg is wearing in the film I posted. She doesn't need it anymore, but it was very helpful when she first starting swimming again, just a few weeks after the op in her case.

It's also unbelievably cute. Has to be said...

They're not stupid at all, I promise you that. We've all felt them and understand why this is such a trying experience. Allow yourself to feel it, but do as MG does and follow his lead to live in the Now. It changes your life for the better.

Absolutely! Meg never takes a bad photo.

That's great that Meg is so strong in the water. She's s spry! Our Wyatt Ray is a good swimmer, but we're the overprotective parents who make him wear his K9 Float Coat no matter what. It keeps us from worrying about him going too far out in the water and not having enough energy to return to shore.

Ok so we took Gibbs in for the last Vet before this Thursday amp to get a fentanol path put on in anticipation for the dreaded Thursday that is coming.  New rug runners have be bought and harness will be here tomorrow.  I teared up like a baby when I signed the surgery forms.  Then as we left a man was in the parking lot staring into space as they just had put his dog down. Maybe I am lucky there is still a road for us to follow with Mr. Gibbs. He is so alert but I know he is in pain. Hopefully this will relieve the old pain and the new one will pass quickly.  I sure pray I have made the right choice.........

Bruce and I will be sending good thoughts your way, give Mr. Gilbbs lots of cuddles and snugggles and plenty of his favourite treats. My Bruce had surgery last Wednesday and while he does tire more easily and is uncomfortable at times, he is more himself now than he has been for the past month or more.

"Bad day" for hte humans maybe, but not for Mr Gibbs! He's gonna have that painful leg gone!!! He'll be high as a kite and seeing beautiful big pink elephants flying all around him!

This stupid piece of crap disease forces us to make seemingly unfathomable decisions. No, it's not easy getting to this point. And recovery isn't exactly a picnic for a couple of weeks. When the sparkle starts coming back though and you see how amazing Mr Gibbs is living life to the fullest, it will all be worth it! 🙂

You are doing this FOR Mr Gibbs, not TO him!

STAY CONNECTED! We all have been through the surgery day and all the worrying that goes along with it. We're here for you!

Feel free to csll the TRIPAWDS helpline on THURSDAY for support! 1 844 TRIPAWDS

Lots of hugs to all

Sally and Alumni Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle and Frankie too!!

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!

I agree with Sally, it's much worse for us than our pet. My kittie Mona went home with the vet after surgery and got a lot of attention and loving from a large family of vets and children. She loves attention and cuddling so she soaked it up.

I didn't find this site until after Mona healed and I sure could have used it!

I wish you and Mr Gibbs an easy recovery.
