End of Chemo.

Millie has now completed her 6 chemo sessions and we have had the most worrying days since her amputation last December. Although she is now OK, last  Sunday, 4 days after treatment, her rear leg was giving way, she was crying and panting and giving us those "had enough" eyes.  She had carboplatin last week. My vet has done all the necessary tests and everything is OK and with some meds she is almost back to her normal self.

Despite this setback, overall,  the chemo treatment has gone really well and it was the right decision to go ahead with it. Millie is on the next part of her 2011 UK tour in 2 weeks time and we look forward to sharing her vacation pics with you.

Some sad news - Millie has had a chest xray today and the cancer has clearly spread; she has at least 3 visible clusters around her chest cavity. To make matters worse, her walking on her rear leg is continuing to be difficult. We have brought her home with some pain killers. Her next appointment is this Friday and unless her mobility improves we will have a difficult decision to make. Until then, I will be getting out the ruffwear harness to give her back legs some support.

Will keep you updated.

Sorry to hear about the x-rays, but lung mets are by no means a death sentence. Many dogs live happily after metastasis, Jerry was comfortable for at least another 7 months after we discovered his mets. We hope Millie's mobility improves, do you have access to a rehab vet and/or hydrotherapy?

If you happen to have a picture of Millie running on three legs, please post or send it our way. We're looking for three legged greyhound image. Thanks and best wishes. Please give Millie a good belly rub for us!

Having fought the mobility demon, I know how helpless you are feeling.  It is important to stay as positive as you can, and fight with all your might until the time you know the battle is over, and believe me, you will know.

I am sending you all the good thoughts I can find.  There are no timestamps on their butts - statistics cannot really tell you what to expect, only what the averages are.  Never stop believing.

Millie - Journey's End.

Millie’s battle with osteosarcoma has ended today. The last few days she has become weaker and weaker and her mobility has all but gone. She has also given up on food and to watch her was unbearably sad and heartbreaking.  We could have carried on until nature took its’ course but it was Millie who had to come first and to have kept her alive with an ever diminishing quality of life was totally unfair to a dog who was active and fun loving.

It is nearly 8 months since her first clinical signs and 5 months since her operation. It is a privilege to have been her nurse, her chef, her carer and her carrier.  These last few months have been so special and I can be thankful that at least we have had this extra time together of which i have treasured every moment. From her first post op poop, to running in the snow on 3 legs, running away from me on the beach, chasing pigeons and throwing rubber chickens round the garden.

Can I thank the world of Tripawds for all your support during the last 5 months. You are all truly amazing for the work you do. I will try, in time, transfer my journal to blog format.

In the meantime, I have Sid to look after as we have to adjust to life without Millie.

Oh, Glenn, I am so sorry to read this.  I know how difficult it is to watch the decline you described. You and Millie gave a valiant fight and that is all any of us can do. We will miss Millie's beautiful face, but she will remain in our hearts forever.
