Hello Forrest

I"m betting you'll be one of the "no regrets" people.  I'm here to tell you that the numbers mean nothing.  Cemil was also given 6 to 8 months–his lungs were clear and I went ahead with amputation.  That was almost 16 months ago and he's still fine.  In his case, the lymph node was also clear, which is a real blessing.

I think Aspen is beautiful and I'm looking forward to hearing about how she's doing.

This is a clinical trial at CSU and is being tested as a possible treatment for humans.

Oooh, scoop. What trial is it? We'd love to write about it in our News Blog and follow Aspen's progress.

Also, keep your ears and eyes peeled for an upcoming Tripawds Pawty in Longmont this August. We're working on planning a date in our Tripawds Facebook page but I'll start a conversation here in Tripawds Parties Forum too! We hope you can make it, do chime  in with a date that works for you OK? Should be plenty of time for recuperation!

Good luck this week, we'll be thinking of you guys.

HI Forrest…

Keep us posted on Aspen…you are doing the right thing by fighting for your pup!

My 11 year old Golden has Fibrosarcoma…his tumor was a grade III as well.  We amputated his front right leg in February.

I am so thankful I did because we have shared some really special moments over the last 3 months. : )

Let us know how Aspen is doing and hang in there…you have come to the right place!  Everyone is so very supportive on here!

Prayers are with Aspen and your family!

Hugs

Wendy & Henri

Sorry it has been a while since I updated.  It has been a whirlwind around here lately!

Aspen has had successful amputation surgery and is recovering well.  I'm absolutely amazed at how quickly she has learned to negotiate stairs etc.  Seems that she will be back to our happy dog very soon.  We did have a minor setback with Aspen licking and chewing at a front leg but we have kept the e-collar on her steady and even though she hates it, she is healing well.

Thanks for all the support again.  Would love to bring Aspen down to a Tripawds get together!  I'll try to put together some more info on the trial she was involved in for the site.

Best,

Forrest

Yippeee! A Hoppy Dawg is just around the corner, yeay!

Yeah, those e-collars are torture, but not any worse than a chewed up leg. Good for you for keeping it on and making sure everything heals.

Keep us posted!

Great news that Aspen is doing so well, Forrest! Doesn't it just make you go all squishy inside at how she's adapted to three legs?!

Sending wishes for many, many more happy days.

Hi Forrest & Aspen…..Shelby & I are so happy to hear that Aspen is doing well.  She's our inspiration.  You see, Shelby is a 6 year old golden retriever with a Grade III STS on her right elbow….we're going down to Tampa tomorrow to meet with the surgeon and if all goes as planned, she will stay with them and have the leg removed on Friday.

Your Aspen is an absolute doll!

OMD!  That's great news!

When did Aspen get the amputation? Have you gone through the 2 Weeks of Hell on the recovery yet?

Well I see that some time has past since this post, and I hope that you made a decision you were able to accept and that Aspen is doing ok. My dog just turned 1.5 years old when I took him to the vet for what I thought was "pink eye" (as did the vet). A few days later there was a lump that formed under his eye, so I took him back immediately. The vet pulled out the fluid in the mass and said it looked suspicious and recommended a full extraction of the tumor. Long story short, we did that, and the pathology reports showed that he had Histiocytic Sarcoma, and it was aggressive! In a matter of a month the tumor grew in his eye socket to approx the size of a golf ball or larger, it pushed his eye all the way up and you couldnt even see it, all you could see was tumor. I gave him CCNU (chemo pill) to try and slow the progression of the cancer, although I was told it would not save his life but rather it may extend it a bit. He received two doses before the tumor grew so large that it was causing him pain. Tomorrow my Oreo gets to go to another world and it is devastating.

Oreo's eye tumor mid stage progression

Being that you have the option of amputation to save Aspen's life, I would reccommend that. I would have been willing to have my dogs' eye removed and another removal of the tumor, but since it was where it was located on his face…they couldn't do it without basically removing half of his face and possibly getting into the brain back behind his eye. I did not have any options other than the chemo and prethnizone (sp?) and trying to keep him as happy as possible. Its hard to watch your beloved animal go through this no matter the age or how long you've owned them. It sucks. But this cancer is not something to mess around with! The CCNU chances of putting the cancer in remission is less than 7% for 6-9 months (Those were the figures my vet gave). Follow your heart. Finances are a legitimate consideration and if you can't afford it, well then its not an option. Do what you can with what you've got, and just make sure you give him a good QUALITY life and don't worry about the Quantity….he'll meet you again one day I believe.

I wish you and Aspen the best. I empathize with what you have been going through. Enjoy each day you've got.

Bless you for offering such sage advice during this time. We are deeply sorry that you both had to go through this awful ordeal, life can be so terribly unfair. We hope some day no dog or human ever has to go through cancer.

You have done so much for Oreo, and the bond you share will never be broken, even after he earns his wings. If you want to talk, we are here for you OK? Please visit our Coping with Loss Forum if you'd like to talk (and if you do, registering as a user will enable your posts to appear automatically).

Many, many hugs coming your way. We are thinking of you both.
