Hi our 7 yr old male greyhound (retired racer) is facing amputation of his L foreleg for osteosarcoma. We feel this is the best option to give him a fighting chance as the cancer has been detected very early. We are really worried about what to expect & how to help him so if anyone else has had a similar situation with a greyhound, we would love to hear from you with any suggestions that helped  Thanks.

Welcome to Tripawds, you future posts will not have to wait for approval.

I'm sorry cancer and amputation has brought you here, but you will find lots of people with experience and support to share.

What is your boy's name?

We have had many Greyhound members, hopefully you will hear from them soon.

In the meantime you might want to look through the Required Reading list, or consider downloading one or more of the ebooks available in the Tripawds Library. Both have lots of information on what to expect with amputation and recovery.

Also, I did a search in the fourms for Greyhound and amputation and got These Results.

Greyhounds are such sweet Souls. Would love to see pictures when you have a moment.

You have come to the right place for support and understanding AND knowledge. We've all been through it.

The amputation will remove his painful leg and give him a great chance for a quality life fullnof more loving and spoiling than you could ever imagine possible!!

Recovery is no picnic for about two weeks...sometimes less, sometimes a bit more. Karen gave you some great links to help you prepare for life as a tripawd.

And yes, we do jave some Greyhounds who have gone through amputation and recovered very well. One long time Greyhound member here, Nixon, had an extended time of over two years and enjoyed it tremendously!!

Here's a link that Jerry just posted regarding anesthesia. There's a section about Greyhounds. I found it so informative and just wanted to pass onto you.

Stay connected, take some deep breaths and let us know how we can help.

Higs!

Sally and Alumni Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle and Frankie too!

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!

thanks for your support, our boy is called Dunk, he's a big blue brindle, I'll try & work out how to add his photo.

I've downloaded the E book & found it really helpful - got towels at the ready, rugs down & trying to persuade Dunk to eat out of raised feeding bowls 🙂

Our vet also works at Greyhound Racing South Australia & has known Dunk through his racing & previous surgeries (corn, removal of dew claws) so we are lucky that he has lots of experience with greys.

The big day is Thursday & I'm telling myself I can be a strong pack leader! Dunk is going to stay at the vets a couple of days so I can bring him home Sunday - it'll be a long couple of days!

Thanks guys, I'm sure I'll be asking more questions over the next few weeks

Sue and Dunk, welcome! Through the years we've had quite a few Greys here as members and currently have a few members in Australia too, so you're in good company.

This story about TJ will inspire you:

and he even has a book now!
