Hi there Beau and mom!

Yes, I can picture Eurydice keeping an eye on whatever was going on inside and outside the consultation room, no detail goes unnoticed at any time big-blink

She has always been extremely curious about the world since she was born, the breeders told me she was the first one to venture out of the "nest" and started interacting with the big boys and girls at a very early age (they have about 20 Danes different ages, and their boys are massive, as in 100/110 kg massive!)

She has been very, very lively all her life, it's only now she was forced to slow down as she is still not capable of doing more than 10/15 min walks. For somebody that used to go to Richmond Park every day for a good hour walk it is quite a change.

I am so looking forward to the moment when she, like your gorgeous boy, can run around flying past everybody!

I am taking her to the vet today as I am a little concerned with her weight and muscle loss. Maybe it is totally normal as she doesn't exercise much these days, and she eats well, about 2kg a day, but still I need to be reassured that this is what I should expect.

Did your boy lose a lot of weight during the first 3 weeks after amp? I imagine it must be a little different as german shepherds are much lighter which is good news if they lose one leg. Mine heart(three dogs ago) lived to 15 1/2 and enjoyed life like there's no tomorrow, he was such a sugar pie!

I am very curious to see Beau's reaction to Eurydice, she is always the biggest one and it is really amazing to see other dogs reaction and children's too ! It is not uncommon to have little toddlers saying to their moms " look! that's a cow!"

Sending you a big hug and lots and lots of cuddles to Beau and XL slobber from Eurydiceheart

Eurydice 77kg/170lb Great Dane limping end of April 2016, amputation (right front leg/osteosarcoma) 4 May 2016 6 courses of carboplatin followed by metronomic therapy, lung mets found 30 Nov 2016. 3 courses of doxorubicin, PET scan 26 Jan 2017 showed more mets so stopped chemo. Holistic route April 2017. Lung X-ray 5 May 2017 showed several tennis ball size mets, started cortisone and diuretics. Miss Cow earned her XXL silver wings 12 June 2017, 13 months and 1 week after amputation and 6 1/2 months after lung mets, she was the goofiest dawg ever and is now happily flying from cloud to cloud woof woofing away :-)

How big is Otis?

Eurydice has not seen many dogs bigger than her (no bigger females ever) apart from a few Dane males. I really like the big boys but figured I better stick to females as they are quite a handful as is big-grin

Sending you a kiss and cuddles to your beautiful boy heart

Hi Eurydice and mum

Oooo she sounds like a real character. I saw the photo's that you posted and am totally love with her, she's a real cutie.

Beau didn't really lose too much weight (minus the leg weight of course!) He was 50kg before amputation, if i remember rightly he was approx 47kg post amputation and is steady at about 45kg now. So he's lost 10% overall since amputation. 1 year before the cancer diagnosis I'm ashamed to say he was a bit of a chunky monkey for a shepherd at 64kg! It crept up on us, he's a sucker for dinner scraps and treats and we were terrible weak humansblush but we put him on a good diet and exercise regime and it was a real blessing that we did, that extra weight would have been really tough for him to carry around on 3.

How much has Eurydice lost overall? Our vet advised it's far better to be on the leaner side of normal than the heavier side so I wouldn't worry too much, as long as it's not too dramatic, her lighter frame is probably doing her a favour. Beau did lose some muscle tone just because the walks were so short at the beginning. Over time though as the walks have increased, he's regained it. We walk him in the orchards and fields near our house and there are quite a few inclines so I'm in no doubt that has helped with his muscles. His little pogo stick at the back as we call it just keeps bouncinglaughing. Despite that he still won't got up stairs anymore though, not so much of a strength issue but more of a confidence issue I think. We'll have to work on that because I know he's desperate to go up there.

Your girl will get there, it's definitely a slow and gradual process. Maybe some at home exercise games? Check out the tripawds 'Loving Life On Three Legs ' ebook which you can download from this website. It's got tons of tips and advice in there for getting strong muscles smiley

Sending lots of love your way

Hmmm. Since Hannah, Beau & Family already saw them, can we just leave them here to not complicate things?

Hiyah Hannah and Beau,

Your boy was Sixty Four kilos ????? My goodness, that is impressive ! I totally understand the spoiling him with treats bit, though ... I always had trouble controlling myself as well, it was a disgrace with my German Shepherd as he, like yours, luuurved to circle our table and get fed by everybody ... I started being more careful with my first Dane Kinky but with Eurydice it didn't matter because she did an insane amount of exercise every day and burned all calories off before you can say GO!

She did lose more weight than Beau, she was 77kg pre op and is 63kg now but the vet told me she was ok even if I look at her with my mummy's eyes and only see a lot of muscle loss on her back legs ... she eats well, about the same as before, but she doesn't want her dry food any more so now I give her grilled chicken and raw food from Pets at Home.

So glad to hear exercise will increase as time goes by and then her muscles will pick up hurrah !!! She has very, very short walks 5/10 min once or twice a day but I am really happy to say she sniffs around when we are out and is marking territory so I can see her going back to being her lovely self, slowly but surely big-grin

She did change with other dogs, though ... she now waggs her tail when she sees another dog but then wants to jump on them if close enough ... Kelvin says it might be because as she feels vulnerable and knows she wouldn't be able to fight back if needed she doesn't leave any room for it to happen and "takes action" ... as a result, for the moment I don't let her get close contact with dogs she doesn't know, it is only fair to them and to my girl.

As for Beau wanting to go upstairs, well if he is determined he should do it when he feels he can! But the tricky part will be coming down, right? I don't know what I will do with Eurydice as with only one front leg and all that weight if she cannot come down afterwords I won't be able to carry her. She will have to learn how to use the upstairs toilet and have mom taking her food up for ever ! Or maybe call the fire brigade, it will be a change from getting cats down from treeslaughing

Thank you for the link re exercise games I will definitely get that!

Sending you lots of kisses and cuddles to your gorgeous boy and slobber from Eurydiceheart

OH MY DOG !!!!!!

Your pictures are fantastic what cuties you have there !!!!

Frankie and Merry Myrtle are the cutest dogs, love to see them sleeping together, so sweeeeeeeet !!!!!

And that video of them eating ice cream ? Totally delightful !!!!

Thank you so much for posting those beautiful pictures, it looks like Merry Myrtle is a Dogue de Bordeaux, I have a huge soft spot for big breeds but nobody could guess that when I got my first furry friend 30 odd years ago, he was a Daschund !!!

Thing with big breeds is you can hug them "fully" no need to bend down for cuddles laughing downside is they reach everywhere, I tried to hide bread loafs on top of the fridge but Eurydice would still get it and devour everything including the paper they were wrapped in, so as to destroy the evidence! But we smarten up and would then get everything inside the oven instead and luckily that worked!

Please keep posting more pictures, I really love to see pictures of all our furry friends, they all look so happy and loved, that is such a joy to see! And seeing our gorgeous fluffies keeps our minds away from the horrible diseases we are all fighting against here.

Sending you lots of love, cuddles and slobber from my girlheart

On October 27, 2016, nearly 6 months after amputation, and 18 months since his cancer likely started, we lost Pofi to a recurrence of Soft Tissue Sarcoma in his spine quite suddenly.  His canine sister also succumbed to cancer on March 1, 2019 - we lavished her with our love in the interim, but life was never quite the same without her only real canine friend. Cliff kitty had to leave us, too, suddenly, in August 2019. Lucia kitty grieved all these losses, but helped us welcome two new Lurchers into our home and our lives, Shae and Barley.
