My beagle Kasey, had her right front leg and shoulder amputated about a year and a half ago due to a mast cell tumor. The tumor was graded at a high stage one/low stage two. I noticed about two weeks ago a small lump in the same area of where her right leg had been. I didn't notice it again after that so I just thought nothing of it. Well this past Saturday I was petting her and noticed it again and it had grown. I could move it around and thought that was possibly a sign of it being a fatty tumor. When I first started to move it around she was crying. However today when I moved it she acted fine. I took her into the vet today and they did a fine needle aspirate.

Well they drew out some blood and clear color liquid from the lump. I believe from what I've heard, blood is not a good sign. The vet ran some tests and said that she saw some suspicious looking cells. She couldn't tell me much more, but she said she wanted to sent it off to get a better reading. She basically told me we were not dealing with a fatty tumor. The results will not be back for 5-7 days. So  I am sitting here imagining the worse but trying to hope for the best.

Kasey has been acting normal. She's eating normally, using the bathroom normally, and usual amount of activity. I just have no idea what to think. Please keep your fingers crossed and keep positive thoughts coming our way.

To tell you not to worry would be insane...and to tell you not to think the worst would be equally insane!

I can tell you two things: Many, many times when we've seen preliminary tests point to something "bad"...it's not! A d, the other thing I can tellyou is...whatever "it" is, you will develop a pla of treatment and move forward! Kasey has already blown "statistics" and "prognosis" out of the water and she's not about to stop now!!!

It's such a good sign that she is feeling great and showing no symptoms of anything wrong! And I mean that! It really is a good sign!!

As hard as it is ....and itsq hard because we are worry wart humans...step back I to the present with Kasey...into her now...and know she isn't worried about a thing and doesn't give a rip about any ole' tests!

I do think a drive through burger and a scoop of ice cream would be something she would enjoy...but you would enjoy watching her eat it even more!!

Hang in there kiddo! We've got a whole lot of paws crossed for yoi!

Sending pawsitive energy and lots of love!

Hoping for the best for you and Kasey.

It is common for mast cell tumors to grow and shrink, that was my experience with my quad pug Tani.  Tri-pug Maggie's tumors tended to be very stable.  Also my experience with mast cell tumors is that a needle aspirate is very clear.  My vet always sent the sample for a path report, but she was correct 100% of the time with many tumors in two pugs.

It's a loooong wait, please let us know as soon as you find out.

Thanks for posting here. I replied to your "Ask a Vet" discussion but to better track Kasey's situation it's good to continue here.

Folks if you're new around here, check out Kasey's story, she's quite a fighter.

Oh my, Kasey is sooooo cute! Just want to pick her up and snuggle her! Yes, that 5-7 day wait seems more like 5-7 years. Of course, Kasey is just going on happy as can be. Well unfortunately my news is not good, Kasey has another mast cell tumor. The vet called and the histologist told her that 25% of the cells are mast cells. When they pulled fluid on Monday they did not get enough to get a clear reading of all the cells. So I had to go in today and she took more fluid and it will be sent to the histologist (free of charge) to determine if all of the cells that are showing are mast cell. So now I have to wait to see what the next steps will be. The vet said due to it's location, kind of on her chest. It's basically where her right leg would've met her shoulder (it's right where her leg and shoulder were amputated) removal of it maybe difficult due to the fact that they won't have much of a "margin" to work with. So removal is a possibility, radiation, chemo meds, or steroid injections of some sort.

We will not know what we can do until she gets the full report back from the histologist and then speaks with the oncologist at NC State University. The vet said she feels that it has not spread internally. She also feels that this flare up has nothing to do with her mast cell that was removed with the amputation. That tumor was graded a low grade two/high grade one. She feels that this flare up completely different. So now I wait again. I should know something by Monday or Tuesday.

I appreciate everyone's warm comments and well wishes. Keep your fingers crossed that we can take care of this in a way that will not be hard on Kasey.

Thanks,

Danell & Kasey

Oh gosh that mast cell cancer is like playing "Whack a Mole"! Geez. Well I'm bummed to hear that but you have some really awesome doctors there to help fight it so there is something HUGE in Kasey's favor.  In addition to that you have all the love and pawsitivity of the Tripawds Nation so we are here for you guys OK? Let us know how next week goes and give her a big smooch.
