Hello everyone. This might be a bit of a long-ish post, so I'll go ahead and put this first part as a brief summary. Last Monday (the 18th) our outside cat came home with a limp in his left hind leg. We immediately took him to the vet which ended up with a biopsy needing to be taken around his knee that Tuesday (the 19th). We were told to expect results within 7-10 days and the wait has been super hard. I've been stressed just about every night (and day) over it and thought I could come here for some support.

Now for the long story version. We had Sammy show up back in April as a stray. He was really scared of us at first, but then warmed up after we talked to him some. We were pretty sure at the time that he had been neutered so he had obviously been someone's pet at some point. Their loss, because he is the sweetest boy ever. Anyway he tended to keep his left hind leg a little straight legged when he would walk. We just thought it was a quirk he had and didn't worry about it. On the 18th of July he had came home with a limp. He was completely normal the day before. We weren't sure if he had gotten hit by a car or perhaps someone had hurt him. We immediately called the vet's office and got him in that day. The vet did X-rays and felt around Sammy's leg. He told us that he thought his kneecap had slid out of place (Luxating patella) and that it was probably something he had always dealt with. He did tell us that this was a pretty rare condition for cats. He told us that Sammy was probably around 4 years old and that he did seem to have some arthritis in the area. They had brought our boy out and we were getting ready to take him back home with some meds when the vet had told us that he was looking back over the X-rays and saw something a little more concerning. My heart immediately dropped and of course immediately went to 'the c word' (yes, I refuse to type it out because I hate it).

He showed us the X-ray and one of Sam's leg bones looked like a tiny bit had been carved out to look like a spoon. He wasn't sure if it was arthritis eating at the bone or the c word eating at the bone. So he recommended a biopsy. We should be getting the results any day now I imagine. After doing the biopsy, in his phone call he told us that he felt it was a little deep in the bone to just be arthritis. At this point, we just really aren't sure if it is a possible c word that started his limp, or if it is his kneecap that is causing his limp, but we just happened to see the spoon shape due to the kneecap being bad.

We're assuming it's probably osteosarcoma, but I don't recall the vet giving any ideas as to what kind it could be. To be honest I kinda wasn't present after the point of him mentioning the word 'neoplastic.' I've seen some sources say that osteo is also a rare condition in cats. Ugh it's just so upsetting to know that whatever he has both conditions are rare in cats. If it's just the kneecap issue or arthritis he'll fix it with surgery. If it is the c word he recommended amputation or chemo. My mom doesn't really like either outcome. She's just afraid that he will have a lot of trouble adjusting if we take his leg, but she's willing to do it. We aren't sure about chemo because we don't know how it affects animals. If it's anything like chemo for humans, then we'd never want to put him through that as we saw the toll it took on my uncle firsthand.

To make all of this a little more upsetting, he also coughs at times which makes me paranoid. I've read that a common place for osteo to spread is to the lungs. However some places I've read say that coughing isn't usually a symptom of lung c word in cats. They mainly mention lack of appetite and lethargy or trouble breathing. He eats like a pig and plays and seems to be a happy boy despite all of the things going on. I know that cats can hide things well though. Next time he coughs, we are going to try to record it so we can show the vet.

Sorry for the super long post! Thanks to anyone who read it. I hope it made some sense I felt I was rambling throughout. This is just what we are going through right now and I could just really use some good vibes. He's been an indoor baby ever since we brought him back home. Our other 2 cats are starting to warm up to him a bit, but it'll still take some time.

Hi Sammy's family, welcome. I'm in the Tripawds Chat room right now if you want to talk.

OK, first of all, Sammy is SO lucky to have you for a family! He found his way to you for a reason, you are a fantastic, super conscientious pet parent. And you know what else? Your vet is pretty cool too for being so aware and thorough. My question is, what kind of biopsy did the vet do? Needle aspirate or an actual bone biopsy (surgical method)? I'm guessing a needle aspirate.

We say here quite often: don't panic until you know what you're dealing with. Yes, osteosarcoma is very rare in cats. I'll be honest, we've seen about 5 osteo cats in the 3 years since felines have joined the community. So when compared to osteo dogs, yep, it's still rare. We have our paws crossed that it is NOT osteo. Odds are pretty slim that it is.

But if it is, you are in a great place for support. We've had other osteo cats that you can learn from, the most famous one being Jill the Tripawd Kitty. She passed recently but it wasn't from the osteo. In fact she did GREAT after the diagnosis! So you can see there is  lots of reasons to be optimistic.

In the meantime, be sure to read all of our other Tripawd Kitty bloggers to see what life on three legs is like for kitties. You will be so impressed!

Take things day by day. The coughing could be TOTALLY unrelated to the leg issue. It could be allergies, which in fact even happened to Jill! Odds are it's not related even if you are dealing with osteo.

So breathe. Don't panic. And as we like to say here, Be More ... CAT! Seriously. Sammy isn't panicking. He's enjoying each day as it comes, taking it all in and just lovin' life as best as he can right now with that bum leg.

Hang in there and keep us posted OK?

Thank you very much, Jerry! We are very thankful to have such a thorough vet. He had a surgical biopsy. He goes back on August 1st to have his sutures removed (even though he's already removed one himselfway-confused). I'm trying my hardest not to panic and just take one day at a time, however my anxiety likes to get me to overthink at times. Hence why I've started honing in on his coughing.

Thank you for linking to the kitty bloggers. I've been reading through the list every so often the past few days. He's definitely loving the indoor life and sleeping on all the furniture. I'll be sure to update as we get more info.

You would be amazed at the stuff we stress out about around here.  After Otis' amputation I was trying to remember if he snored before (or was it a sign of cancer in his lungs).  Turns out it was probably springtime allergies, and it's over now.  He hasn't snored in weeks.  So now I feel like I need to check his breathing if he is too quiet.  😀. Just take it one day at a time.  Each new piece of information you get will put you in a better place to make your next decision.

Otis - 106 pound lab/Dane mix, lost his right front leg to osteosarcoma on Febuary 9, 2016.  Four rounds of carboplatin completed in April, 2016.  Lung mets August 25, 2016.  Said goodbye too soon on September 4, 2016.   Lost his adopted sister, Tess, suddenly on October 9, 2016. likely due to hemangiosarcoma.

Wherever they are, they are together.

Good advice from everyone! As you can see, YOU ARE NOT ALONE! We understand like no others can.
We all can forget that a cough, a snreze, watery eyes, etc are almost always some type of allergy in the summer!

Just keep things chunked down, okay? Stay connected to us and we'll keep you from going over the edge! We do that a lot around here!

Your love for Sammy comes shining through in your post and you clearly have his best interest at heart. Whatever "it" is, you will come up with a trestment plan and move forward!

Looking forward to some pictures of this cutie pie!

Hugs!

My kitty Mona had her leg amputated 25 months ago. She's doing great, and if anything, is feistier than ever. The neighbour even accuses Mona of going over to her yard and taunting their dog. I'm pretty sure it isn't Mona because she's terrified of that dog, but if it is her, I'm secretively proud that she feels so strong that she can torment a large dog.

Cats are resilient and easily adapt to 3 legs. Of course, cancer is always a concern, well, a concern for us, not for the cats. They just want to enjoy life and feel good. So that'll be the goal of the vet -  to ensure Sammy has quality to his life. Once you have the results, the vet will let you know the options.

Before they do an amputation or any treatment, the vet will xray Sammy's lungs to ensure it makes sense to proceed with any treatment. I like how Sally said to keep it "chunked down" - take one step at a time so it's not so overwhelming. If you are concerned about the cough, the vet may have something to give relief.

Sammy sure is lucky to have found your home.

Everyone has already given you such good info above - I have nothing to add, but to say I am here rooting for a good outcome for your sweet Sammy, too!

Please update us as you make your way through this!

Lisa, Minneapolis

On October 27, 2016, nearly 6 months after amputation, and 18 months since his cancer likely started, we lost Pofi to a recurrence of Soft Tissue Sarcoma in his spine quite suddenly.  His canine sister also succumbed to cancer on March 1, 2019 - we lavished her with our love in the interim, but life was never quite the same without her only real canine friend. Cliff kitty had to leave us, too, suddenly, in August 2019. Lucia kitty grieved all these losses, but helped us welcome two new Lurchers into our home and our lives, Shae and Barley.

Hi Sammy and family, welcome heart

Being on an osteosarcoma journey with my dog, I found the most important thing is not to panic and take one step at a time, managing events as they present themselves.

Having said that, a little while ago I panicked because she was sneezing ... and I thought that might be a sign of cancer spreading to her lungs ... thanks to this wonderful community (including Dr. Pam) I was reassured sneezing is not a symptom and then got final confirmation from the vet when he saw her.

Stay close to us, we are all here to help and guide you on your journey as best as we can.

Let's wait to see what the biopsy result for Sammy is and then you can move forward, there is always a solution !

Sending you lots of positive energy and cuddles to Sammy heart

Eurydice 77kg/170lb Great Dane limping end of April 2016, amputation (right front leg/osteosarcoma) 4 May 2016 6 courses of carboplatin followed by metronomic therapy, lung mets found 30 Nov 2016. 3 courses of doxorubicin, PET scan 26 Jan 2017 showed more mets so stopped chemo. Holistic route April 2017. Lung X-ray 5 May 2017 showed several tennis ball size mets, started cortisone and diuretics. Miss Cow earned her XXL silver wings 12 June 2017, 13 months and 1 week after amputation and 6 1/2 months after lung mets, she was the goofiest dawg ever and is now happily flying from cloud to cloud woof woofing away :-)

Thank you so much everyone for the support, similar stories, and positive energy! Still no biopsy results, but they should be coming soon. I’ll be sure to update whenever we get the news.

otisandtess – Glad to know I’m not the only one who finds little things to fuss over.

benny55 – He does have watery eyes as well, so perhaps allergies it is. Since we’ve only known him for a few months we wouldn’t know if this is his summerly/all the time normal. He also has a buddy who is pretty feral who also seems to have watery eyes whenever I can look out and catch him eating on the porch. So if they were probably dropped by the same person then they could have developed the same allergies or perhaps be related and have the same issues.  Reading everything here has definitely made me a little calmer and focused on taking things one step at a time. I’ll add a photo at the end of this post. : )

kazann – Aww that is pretty awesome if it is your Mona. I’ve read that cats do seem to have an easier time than dogs with 3 legs. However I do know that every pet is different. We are definitely very happy with our vet and are sure that he will do what’s best for our boy. We are glad he found us too. : )

eurydice – Nice to hear that sneezing wasn’t a sign of spreading. Also reassuring that I’m not the only one to focus on ‘new’ things that happen to pop up and assume the worst.

Now here's a pic of our Sammy : )

Sammy may have an upper respiratory infection. These are common in animal shelters so they likely spread in feral colonies. Your vet will help you with this.

Sammy is a beauty.

Oh, Sammy is a really gorgeous boy heart

I love the way cats adore cardboard boxes, all of my cats (and my daughters's cats too) have enjoyed scratching, hiding and "fighting" with cardboard boxes clown

Sending you and your cutie a big hug and ear scratches heart

Hello everyone. I have a quick update for Sam.

Yesterday we took him to get his stitches out (everything healed well) and asked if they had heard anything from the lab about his results. They said that they had recently called them because getting results usually doesn't take this long. They only got the receptionist and they said they'd forward their message to the lab and get someone to call them back. Today we got a call from the vet saying that the lady working on his sample has so far only gotten results that show inflammation. She didn't report her findings yet because she didn't want to give inconclusive results (very much appreciated). She's wanting to look at thinner sections of the bone so it will probably take her 3-4 more business days to get a conclusive result.

I guess the best news so far is that she didn't get glaring badness from the jump. So here's hoping for good news.
