I went against the grain I guess and got the Ezy dog harness for Clyde (front leg amputee).

Not at all, it's about a 50/50 split. Everyone's needs are different and we say, whatever works for your pack is the right one! Glad it's working for Clyde, let's see some pics 🙂

Hello Everyone,

Sorry its been a few days.  Thank you all for your advice regarding visits and the harnesses!  We did go along with Jerry and not visit, I was also told by a friend who has a breeder guide dog that visiting is bad for the dog.

We got a call this evening from the surgeon and she said that Max's lymph nodes were cancer free!!!!!  The Oncologist at LIVS is still concerned about microscopic cancer cells being in his blood stream and are recommending chemotherapy.  They say there is a 50% chance it could reoccur somewhere else. She said if we are in the good 50% then he is cured, if not they give him 18 months.   We are waiting for the oncologist to give us the protocol and percent success rates tomorrow.

However, my holistic vet disagrees.   He also says no chemo. He believes the cancer will not return.

We are just so happy that the nodes are clear and the chest x-rays were clear that I feel in my gut that my holistic vet is right!  He told us this cancer only stays local and I the 3 1/2 years, that is the only place it has returned.

Max is due to come home Friday providing he keeps doing well.  I will keep you posted.

Again any advice is appreciated!!!

Thanks Again,

Theresa, Max and familyheartheartheart

WOOOHOO! Yay for the report! Yay for Max and You!

You have such a great attitude. I like that you're looking at your options and going with your gut feeling. In the cancer journey it's the only way to go. You're making an educated decision that's right for your pack and that's all that matters.

Friday can't come soon enough!

Good news all the way around!!! I KNOW Max will be soooo happy to be home!! 🙂

For now, just keep things chunked down and focus on Max's recovery. You can sort through whether you want to do chemo or not a bit later.

Just remember that Max doesn't count days on a calendar and doesn't give a rip about any ole statistics! He has no worries about anything! The bliss of being dog!

I'm just so thrilled he's coming home!! Savor the moment and celebrate with him like crazy! Would love to see pics!!

Hugs-!

Hi Theresa and Maxheart

GREAT NEWS, we are thrilled for you !!!!! and he is coming back on Friday hurraaaaaahhh clap

Now, you just have to concentrate on his recovery and you will see Max being Max again soon !

As for chemo, I agree with Sally, it is not a priority decision right now, you have time to consider it and whichever way you will go will be the right way for you and your boy.

Sending you a big hug and cuddles to Max heart

Hello Everyone,

Sorry it's taken me so long to update everyone.  Max finally came home tonight! He wasn't ready to b released on Friday, he was having some pain and vomiting.  So over the weekend I shopped and must have bought 20 area rugs and runners to cover every tile and wood floor! It was very stressful worrying about him, hearing he was in pain, they started laser therapy to help with the pain and they had to change his medicines  because of the vomiting.

I was seriously questioning myself if it was the right thing to do.  I was so relieved and happy to see him tonight! The whole family went to pick him up. He ran(hopped) to all of us!! He was soooo happy! His tail couldn't wag fast enough! We were all soo happy to finally see him and hug him! They showed us how to assist him up and down the steps, and how to lift him in and out of the car.

He is on pain medicine carprofin 75 mg twice daily and Gabapentin 600 mg half pill twice daily.  They told us to keep, him fairly conifined for now. Lots of rest and TLC!

The physical therapy person felt the ruff wear web master was not supportive enough for lifting him in the fron. She said the handle was too far back. Anyone ever hear of helpem up harness?  They also recommend that one. I suggested the ezy dog but they never heard of it. I'm going to order both and see what fits better.  The therapist said to bring him by once I get them and she will tell me which one. Anyone using the helpem up? It looks too complicated!

thank you all so much for all your advice, help and support. I never would have gone through this without hearing rom all of you! I'm taking the next 3 days off from work to be with Max!!!!

Love be and hugs to all,

 Theresa

Oh I'm so happy things are good with Max and he's finally home! What a great day this is!

Regarding the harness: the model the therapist recommended is one we don't carry for many reasons. Being more complicated to use is one reason. It's great for dogs with hind end difficulties, but overall we've found it to be too much harness for most amputee dogs. Many therapists use that particular harness for rehab because it does allow them to support the dog from front and rear, which is important during exercises, but I'm curious if the therapist has seen the new Webmaster Plus? You might want to run it by her and see if she thinks it's something you could use during everyday living. We find ours indispensable because our Wyatt Ray travels everywhere with us and has stairs to climb at home. The EzyDog harness is great for walking and normal activities but I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be suitable for rehab. You can ask the them though.

Hi Jerry,

I did buy the Webmaster plus!  She said the handle was too far back.  I'm thinking we have to give it a try at home?  I'm a little hesitant to put it on him, his incision isn't fully healed she told us yesterday.  Will that pad pressing against it hurt him?

I had to hand feed him this morning, and he hasn't drank any water since we brought him home last night.  I've tried to see if he want to go out but he's totally not interested.  He is just sleeping all day.

How can I send some pictures from my iPhone to this forum page?

I'd love for you all to see him!

Let me know what you think,

Thanks,

Theresa

Hi Theresa!

Sure if you want to try the harness at home see how it works for you. It may be that your rehab therapist is just more comfortable with the other one. If that's the case, maybe he can just use theirs during rehab but keep your Webmaster for at home? We think it's an awesome tool to have, so call us biased! 🙂

We recommend waiting to wear the harness, unless he absolutely has to because you have to help him on stairs and into vehicles. In that case, you can put a t-shirt on underneath the harness and it should be fine. Watch for signs of discomfort just in case though.

What pain medication is he on? That may be why you're having to hand feed him, pain meds really kill appetites. Try getting him to drink water, that's more important than eating right now. Add some no-sodium chicken or beef broth to his water and see if that works. You can also put ice cubes in his bowl, or even toss in some water from a can of tuna fish. Anything to get him interested.

As for adding images to the forums, absolutely! You just need to have your photos hosted somewhere. Either in your own Tripawds blog or somewhere like Flick'r, Photobucket, etc. Wherever you host, all you need to do is

  • copy the URL of the photo (touch the hosted photo you want to share until the "copy" option appears).
  • return here, select the little image icon in your forum post editing toolbar (it's the one that looks like a picture with a mountain and sun). A popup box will appear and that's where you paste the photo URL.

Make sense? If not let me know OK? I'm happy to help. We can't wait to see him!

Sounds like .ax wore himself out with all of the excitement of being home yesterday!

Okay, here's another fool proof way you can try to entice them to drink. Scoops of ice cream swirled in the water. First you have Max licking the ice cream off the spoon and you guide the spoon into the water. Dont swirl it too much...make sure he can still taste it.

I know they were treating him for vomiting, righ? Were they givr him fluids before he came home? Do you feel like he's nauseous....no I terest I. Food whatsoever? How much did he eat when you feed him...a d was it some really good stuff...chicken, etc? Right now djry recovery, feed him anything yummy he'll eat!

During the time they were doing physical therapy, what kind of things did they have him do? Is it possible it was a little too much and caused some sore muscles, joints, etc.

Did he eat and drink well for them? How much moving around were they having him do?

What kind of pain meds is he on now and how often?

Geez...asking a lot of questions! I think he's just so content to be home and so worn out from the whole ordeal, he's just catching up on so e really good sleep! You know he didn't sleep well at the vet!

Check in tonight if you can......and hopefully with pictures!!! YAY!

Lots of hugs!

Hello Everyone,

I have been so busy taking care of Max that this is the first chance I've had to respond.  He was eating and drinking at the vet.  Physical therapy was twice a day, once in the morning and once in the late afternoon.  Right now he is eating fine as long as we hand feed him and put melted butter on his food!  He is drinking fine now also.

We had a scare on Thursday night into Friday, he managed to jump up on my bed in the few seconds I turned my head!  Once he was there a while he stood up to change position and let out a cry.  We kept him on the bed with us all night.  Friday my husband lifted off the bed and we saw that he was very hesitant to go down the steps and back up.  Which was not how he was the two days prior.  When he tried to  lay down and get up he would cry. I immediately took him back to the Vet Hospital and they said he probably gave himself a soft tissue injury and we needed to keep him really confined for the next week.  We also needed to limit the stairs to twice in a 24 hours period.  Thank God my son can carry him for the other potty breaks!  He seems to be much better today, and he hasn't cried once since we confined him.

I need to keep watching the videos of Pofi and Eurydice and all the other tripawds to keep my spirits up, and know that Max just needs to get stronger and he will be like them!  It is hard to see him get so tired when he goes for a potty break and it seems to be a struggle for him to stand and eat at his bowl.  He has a raised double bowl for water and food.  He will only drink the water from it, he won't eat his food from it for some reason.  Not sure if its the spoiling he got at the vet hospital with the hand feeding.  We will see, hope fully he will adjust back to his food bowl when he feels stronger.

Is that normal for it to be hard for him to stand in one place for a while?  I see he still hasn't fully adjusted to putting his front foot in the center, he still keeps it to the right side a lot, so his balance is kind of off a little.  Pofi and Eurydice make it look easy!

Pictures of Max coming soon! I'm waiting for my husband to help me post them, he is more tech savvy than me!

Love to all!

Theresa

HI THERESA AND MAX!!

I had to chuckle at how well Max has trained you to hand feed him a d ro top his food off with melted butter! ' Good job Max!!clap

I'm glad he is feeling better after being more confined. Is he on Rimadyl or anything similar?

Try not to compare recoveries. I know it's really hard though.

I wish I could offer more specific help as far as the proper rehab techniques to help tripawds adjust properly. Someone will come behi d and give you some links to rehab stuff.

Do you think he is tiring easy or it's more pain related? I k ow this is a newer way of doing things, but I still can't believe the clinkc kelt Max two weeks and did stair climbing PT on him , among others things, pretty much right after surgery.. Just wondering if it was too much strain on him physically.
There is a difference between physical therapy and a Rehabilitation session. Do you have a Rehab p@ace where they coukd assess all his mobility issues.

Sounds like his overall attitude is good. After all, he felt spunky enough to jump up on HIS bed! 🙂

Ugh! I'm not much help tonight! It does take many larger dogs a lot longer to get their strength back. Hesw doing things at a pace that works for him. As you've seen on here, it's about building core muscle strength and not about endurance.

Oh, one other thought. Did'Max use raised food bowls bedore surgery? If not, try feeding him with his bowl on the floor...or feeding him off of your plate with a few scraps mised in. Just don't slip on the melted butter!

Be sure and celebrate the victories!! Any small improvement is a HUGE IMPROVEMENT around here! 🙂
Cannot wait for the videos!

Lots of love!

Hi, Theresa:

One thing to keep in mind about Pofi is that he really was not using that leg for a few weeks before surgery  - not at all.  And prior to that he had been only partial weight bearing for a very long time.  So he really was sort of used to being a tripawd already and it was therefore a bit easier for him to adjust.  He just had to get used to not having the weight of that leg - a bit of a balance rework.

But - Max should get there with a bit more time.  And, I did a LOT of hand feeding post surgery.  I think it was somewhat all the meds and feeling a bit off color - sticking his nose in the bowl seemed to just be off putting.  But a little bit at a time was more palatable.  I also actually find even know he does better eating if I hold his bowl for him - a bit higher than the raised bowl feeder we have.  I think the taller a dog is, the tougher to hold their balance when bending neck down to eat.  Drinking takes less time - so easier.  At least that is how it looks to me.

Pofi definitely also did not do a lot of standing in one place for any period of time for many weeks past surgery.  Out to potty, back in and a lie down. Or if it was nice, he would lie down on a bed or blanket we put out for him.  Even now, 3 months post op, when he wants a break if we are out at dog park or walking (we do more park than walking as he just doesn't seem that keen on leash walks anymore) we take one.  A tripawd uses more energy and oxygen getting around.

Hope you feel like you see some incremental gains - little by little!

Lisa, Minneapolis

On October 27, 2016, nearly 6 months after amputation, and 18 months since his cancer likely started, we lost Pofi to a recurrence of Soft Tissue Sarcoma in his spine quite suddenly.  His canine sister also succumbed to cancer on March 1, 2019 - we lavished her with our love in the interim, but life was never quite the same without her only real canine friend. Cliff kitty had to leave us, too, suddenly, in August 2019. Lucia kitty grieved all these losses, but helped us welcome two new Lurchers into our home and our lives, Shae and Barley.
