Oh my gosh YES those are great signs that she's doing well! Some dogs take weeks to sleep on the amputation side. She definitely sounds like she's on the mend and in about two weeks you're just going to be so amazed that you were so worried!

Keep us posted OK? Oh please dont worry about this but I like to mention it...make sure that you monitor her poop while she's on Deramaxx. Sometimes NSAIDs like it can cause ulcers, so if her stools turn mucousy or black & tarry, call your vet asap. It's rare but there's a risk.

Yay Ada! And yay for your vet too!

So happy to read Ada is doing well.....yes, the first week or so can be trying for some pups, but overall, it sounds very good, and she seems to be getting back to herself. Pain meds and getting them regulated can be tricky for some of our pups and kitties, but once they are past the 2 week mark, they are usually completely back to normal.

Continue to keep us posted on your sweet girl and you will definitely see her improving every single day.

Checking in with our Tripawds family. The last few days have been pretty discouraging for us. Ada has been very quite. She spends 90% of the time in her bed. When we take her out to potty, she does her business right outside of the door and then turns to come back in. In the house, she walks a few feet and lays down. She has had little interest in her regular food but we made her some ground beef and rice which she will eat. She has been drinking. She turns her head away from her favorite treats!

She does not appear to be in pain - continues to lay on her amputated side. I think we have been so focused in managing her pain that we didn't pay attention to her tummy. Ada has always had a sensitive tummy. She has been to the vet a couple of times because she would have periods of vomiting and not eating. Vet could not find anything and suggested we give her pepcid when she has an upset stomach. She had also been on antibiotics which probably doesn't help her stomach. She has not had any vomiting but it dawned on us that she is probably nauseated!

This morning we gave her a pepcid and she seems to be a little more perky. When it was dinner time, she actually came to the kitchen and waited for her bowl! We took her outside after dinner and she walked around and checked out the backyard for a short time. When it was time to go in, she went up the stairs to the back door. Her older brother has to go in the side door so he can go up the carpeted steps because he has trouble walking. When she saw us going to the side door, she came down the stairs and actually had a little trot in her step to catch up to her brother!

Right now she is sleeping next to me in the living room! First night she has been out of her bed in several days! I am hoping we are seeing the light at the end of the tunnel!!

That little "crash period" is not unusual at all. This joirne is called a roller coaster ride for good reason...full of ups and downs!

If you think her lain is being managed and she is showing any signs of discomfort, kt coukd be the tummy isues. Dogs can, however, be very dtooc when it comes to hiding pain.

The lain meds, antibiotics can cause havoc on a regular tummy, much less a sensitive tummy.

Maybe the vet can give you something else to coat her rummy. And maybe you could try some yogurt too.

Glad she is doing better though. Keep usposted!

With love from your family!

I'm so glad she's doing better! Really, it is so difficult to read what's going on with them during the rollercoaster. However, I think she's in very, very good hands!

Harmony became a Tripawd on 10/21/14 (MCT). She left us way too soon on 11/1/14.

Deb, I don't have any real advice but wanted to reply in solidarity ... my Ollie had his amputation (also an OSA diagnosis) May 12, so we're two days ahead of you and Ada in the recovery process. As everyone says, all dogs are different -- but for us, days six through 12 were the hardest. Ollie slept almost nonstop when he wasn't eating or on a potty break, and he also turned away from treats he used to devour. His eyes lacked their sparkle and he just had no energy.

However, yesterday (day 13) he seemed to turn a corner, suddenly having brighter eyes and being more awake. He jumped up on the couch for the first time and also went up a few stairs by himself (we aren't encouraging this yet; it happened so fast we weren't ready for it). We took him to a quiet local park to lie in the grass for a while, and it was the first real excitement we'd seen from him.

This morning, he seemed just as lively as yesterday, and he suddenly had a lot of pep in his step when we took him out to pee. It's been encouraging. His sutures come out tomorrow and our vet says the week after that is when most people report the greatest progress.

Just wanted to share this to give you more hope that Ada's ups and downs are normal and that you can likely count on more "ups" in the very near future. Good luck and keep us posted!

Six-year-old Ollie, a spunky, 55-lb. Australian cattle dog mix, was diagnosed with osteosarcoma May 1, 2015. Front right leg was amputated May 12. Did four rounds of carboplatin chemo treatment, ending Aug. 20. Lung x-rays still clear as of end of September. The rest of our story is still unfolding.

Yeah for Ollie! clap

Ada will do ok, Murphy was like that too.  Those first 2 weeks there was a lot of ups & downs, not eating, resting, just not acting like himself.  Once she gets weaned off her meds you will see a difference.

Murphy was 7 when he had his surgery, so a little bit older.  But he's 9 now and still doing great!

I am super new to this forum, just signed up less than ten minutes ago. I am fascinated with your guys' experiences in this thread as today my dog got the amputation diagnosis. The tumor is gross and the placement is bad so no matter what it is, we're amputating. The biopsy will be done once the leg is removed and to be completely honest, I am not worried so much at all about how she will get around without the leg, as it has been several months since she has used it properly (long arduous story meant for another time.) I would really like to keep up with your experiences since you're going through this at a time so similar to mine. We are not entirely sure that it's OS but my ortho vet sounds very convinced that that's more than likely the case, so I am really looking to find some supportive people who can help me and who I can also be there for during a time as confusing and uncomfortable as this one. I really hope Ada does great coming out of her resting stage! I will definitely be keeping a very close eye on your story 🙂 Good thoughts coming from Detroit, Michigan!

I think we have reached the much anticipated 2 week mark! Ada is doing much better. She is more active, wagging her tail more enthusiastically and no longer spends the majority of the day in her bed. She is spending more time with her brother Bailey and follows my husband and I from room to room. She had her stitches out today and the vet said she is looking great. She is off all of her meds. She has a little spark to her step! Thanks for getting us through these 2 weeks. Our next step of the journey starts on June 4 when she has her first chemo treatment.
