Hello Watu Wazuri heart

Paka Tom is still home and healing.. I wanted to ask how long it's normal for him to be medicated for? Both the vets said 5 days after surgery, but yesterday he had a slight fever in the morning so we went for another antibiotic + painkiller shot. I don't know what standard protocol is and the last thing I want is for him to be in pain, and he's so good at hiding it!

I'm also not sure about his energy levels, they're switching so much! He ran out into the garden yesterday under my Mum's supervision and just sat under the car for a few hours, and we had to bribe him back in with food.. and then we put him in the closet, but he has not moved out since, except for 2 steps to eat this morning. He hasn't even to peed or anything, he hates peeing himself so I don't know if he's holding it in or if there's just no pee. There's a litter tray very close to his closet. Definitely no poo, thank you for telling me about that Purrkins before I could start worrying sleepy But is it normal for him to just be in one place all day? I'm not sure what to expect, he seemed so springy yesterday until we brought him home and then he's just been in one place sleeping..

Other than that he is eating very well and purring a looot, which is very unusual for him! He sends his love, here is a photo from the vet where the light was better! Will take some more in the day tomorrow superstar

Hugs to you all heart

Paka Tom, you are a beautiful boy!!! Oh my Gongases!

Mama, I'm not sure what to tell you about a cat's recovery, but with Stewie it was a good two weeks of up and down. It's fantastic that he is still eating! Good boy... As far as medications, we had Stewie on meds for at least two weeks. It's good that Paka Tom is sleeping lots, that is definitely what his body needs and as far as hiding under the car... well he may have exhausted himself getting there and was taking a bit to get the courage to go back home?!

My old boy Spike drools and purrs when he is a little stressed or not feeling well. So it is possibly Tom telling you that he is uncomfortable, which is understandable too!

As always, if you have any concerns, call your vet and they will be able to soothe your fears. These are only my thoughts that come to mind. I hope Paka Tom gets back to his spunky self again really soon! Sending lots of kitten cuddles and chin scratches.

Sloppy kisses from Stewie👅🐾
& all the very best from his adoring pack,

Awe Paka Tom your sooo darn cute OMC Smooch his head for us please!!

We were sent home with 3 days of Buprenorhine & 14 days of Gabapentin. When we were coming to the end of the Buprenorphine I stretched his time from every 10.5-11 hours to every 12 and Purrkins was in pain! He hissed, growled & meowed at me he would not let me near him thats never Purrkins. I went right back to his 10.5-11 hours and called the surgeon got more pain meds prescribed.

Total time Purrkins was on meds was 12 days of Buprenophine & 14 days of Gabapentin.

As for activity we had restricted activity for 14 days. We stayed in that spare room Purrkins recovered in the closet. We were in that room for 14 days;) he did get around in the room but always headed back to the closet;)

Remember how we warned you about under the bed 😉 Same thing for most anything Cars yep ! I would be concerned of his incision getting under the car, Maybe Mum can carry Tom outside & sit him on her lap, to get some fresh air? I did that with Purrkins.

Purrkins did sleep a lot the first 2 days home! It was day 3 before Purrkins started getting around then it was on and off activity. Purrkins was active in the morning and then zonked. Get up to eat & potty move about get his meds zonked again . Tom being a little older might be a little different & sleeping is great!

I wouldn’t worry about him sleeping at all! I think he is so happy to be home & he is tired and healing ! He is eating that is huge! Does Tom eat wet or dry food?

Peeing - he hasn’t peed since he’s been home??!!? Have you tried setting Tom in his box ? I would set him in his box periodically when he gets up and eats after put him in his box and move the litter around and see what that does. If he hasn’t peed at all that scares me, & I would call the vet & tell them! Purrkins did pee every day. Tom didn’t pee outside maybe? I hope so!

Eating & Purring & Sleeping PURRFECT we just would like to see some PEE Paka Tom!!
Otherwise he sounds like he is doing great running out to the garden OMC! Not so great under the car but yep everything else sounds normal! If no pee at all since he has been call the Vet, don't be afraid to call them, thats what they get paid for OK!!

Hugs to you & we are sending PEEING thoughts along with healing & yep cross the poop off the worry list for today;)

I had to go dig around how long a cat can go without peeing. This is what I found. I would panic in our house if one of our boys did no pee in one day. We have been to the ER too many times to not panic.

I probably know more about cat pee & pooping in our house then the normal person does. 🙄We have a old phone set up as a video recorder at the litter box. As I said Purrkins peed for me every day sometimes twice a day in recovery & normally.  Our other cat he Pees once or twice a day. Some days only once .  Both are boys and boys can have more troubles with that area. We had to monitor our boxes because Purrkins bother has had issues with both pee & poop why we now know what comes in and out of whom;) If Tom hasn't peed I would call the Vet . I would hate to see it become a emergency. PEE Tom PEE please ! Screen-Shot-2017-09-29-at-5.10.25-PM.jpgImage Enlarger

Hi, I'm just catching up with Paka Tom and see he's doing well with his surgery. When my Mona got home she had fun peeing in unauthorized places. Every where except for the litter box. When I read your posting I had the same thoughts as Holly/Purrkins - place Tom in the litter box every few hours. Mona would just sleep in the box but maybe Tom would understand. Perhaps Tom did go under the car?

If you are concerned the vet could express the urine from Tom if need be and perhaps teach you how to do it.

I have no idea what the standard protocol is for pain medication. It seems to be a range from very little to approximately 5 days of and opioid like buprenorphine plus a week to 10 days of an anti-inflammatory / pain killer such as Metacam. I believe Mona was off her medication just before her stitches were removed.

I'm sure Super Stu turning on the tap will help with peeing!

Oh my goodness, I typed up a reply and hit submit yesterday but it didn't submit at all mad

Sorry for the silence everybody!

My old boy Spike drools and purrs when he is a little stressed or not feeling well.

I think that might be it thanks Spike! I was reading about purring and apparently cats do it when they are nervous or uncomfortable too! I'm not sure how to make him better.. I think it's just part of his healing process, I'm just making sure I do everything possible to make him feel safe and recover quickly.

He is eating that is huge! Does Tom eat wet or dry food?

He's been eating meat and wet food, and drinking some milk. After the first day he wouldn't drink plain water, and he loves milk a lot, so I make sure he eats wet food and gets some milk to make sure he isn't dehydrating.

Mona, Tom needs to take a page out of your book! Here's a PEE UPDATE:

So the night that I made the post about Paka Tom not peeing, I heard some shuffles in the litterbox and I went to check, and he had peed a little and there was a bit of runny poo (sorry  blush), so I thought that was all the pee! But he was scheduled for a vet visit yesterday anyway just to check him, since I brought him home early. When we got there, Paka Tom is hating the vet more and more and he was quite scared so he started to pee as they lifted him out of the carrier and it was a lotttt of pee.. he must have been holding it in for ages!  And he hasn't peed since (this was yesterday afternoon, it's morning now). I'm consistently putting him in the litterbox but he just goes back into the closet each time..

He has also been extremely reluctant to move - he walks a few steps but hurries back into his little closet corner, and has stopped coming out to eat as well - I put the bowl inside to get him to eat or feed him by hand to get something inside him. It's morning now, and he only ate a tiny bit of his meat last night. I'm not sure if he's trying to reduce his bathroom use by not eating, but I really don't want to let him out into the soil..

I asked the vet what's going on, and he said that it's likely that Paka Tom is very nervous about moving around now, and that might be why he isn't peeing. But I think he also hates being unable to clean his bum after so he's cutting down his need for it. Or maybe he doesn't like litter much and only uses it as much as really necessary.

I am thinking we will give him some fresh warm kuku for breakfast and milk now, and dunk him into the box, and if that doesn't work we'll put a t-shirt on him (Purrkins' DIY cone alternative  heart) and launch him onto a mud patch in the garden (heavily supervised!). Or we might sneak the cone off for the t-shirt (also heavily supervised) so he knows he can lick his bum and maybe then he'll pee..

Thank you Super Stewieee and everyone for all the taps and Kiswahili pee thoughts  clap  - I'm sure the pressure is building!! If anyone has any ideas do share, and I promise to update as soon as there is any change! Love to you all!

Petra Asante sana for the Kiswahili refresher❣️

Asante sana for the update, not sure what happened on it not showing up? If it continues please say can report to technical support . We are just relieved to get the update !

Yes your right purrs can be both they use the purr for different reasons! I was surprised to learn that as well they use it to calm themselves! I learned that with our other kitty when he was at the vet all the time he would quiver, purr & his nose even dripped, all from being afraid the purr is to help calm them !!

Is Paka Tom still have the pain meds from before you were admistering at home? Is that a option to do? I have to wonder if he is in pain.

Now for the PEE.

this calls for Celebration!!! Mashujaa Day IN HONOR OF OUR PAKA TOM !! I don’t care where it was it's a celebration !!!!

4js9zjCt9x-4.jpgImage Enlarger

That is also another nervous behavior I went thru with our other cat he would go to the vet and Pee all over the table ! I was always informed of this since it was at the teaching hospital and I was not present! They had to always clean him up he came out soaked & so I was informed ! I don’t blame them, it’s all so terrifying for the kitties!

For Paka Tom we don’t care we are just delighted to hear he Peed!! clap
Great idea try the onesie we didn’t have any issues with Purrkins he couldn’t get to his incision at all and I do believe Tom will like it better then the cone! He will feel more stable and hopeful free to pee & clean the area!!

We had instructions from the hospital to apply warm compress to Purrkins incision 2-3 times a day for 3-5 days
Heat a moistened clean washcloth in the microwave. Place in a sealed zip block bag & apply to incision for 10 minutes at a time. Purrkins loved his warm compresses might be something to try on Tom!

IMG_0700.jpgImage Enlarger

For the record Paka Tom that doesn’t qualify for Mona’s recovery book! Nope she wrote her very own special book on recovery 🙂 Right Kerren😮 😉

I am glad to hear he is still eating & drinking milk! Keep doing whatever you need to coax him to eat! Did I mention Gerbers baby food? Turkey & Gravy, Chicken & Gravy, ham & gravy. Our cats love it and its great to have on hand for times like these! High in calories and I think Tom will lick it right up for you!

If you think he is uncomfortable please advocate for Tom the pain management will make the all difference in his recovery for both of you!

Sending much Upendo

Happy Mashujaa Day Paka Tom!clap A pee is a pee is pee!!! Well done my big Mrembo boy! I sure hope the onesie helps... the cone of shame is probably a huge hinderence and Tom might feel a lot better when it is off.

I'm sorry you are so stressed with the vets Paka Tom, so is my Spikey. My spike gets so wound up stressed, he has actually passed out while he was there! It scared the living bejesus out of me! I can totally understand Toms fear of the vets now, but a little extra lovin and more Kuku after a visit should help. Now we ask that the vet comes here for any serious issues with Spike. we are incredibly fortunate that our vets will do that for us. Thankfully I don't have to ask them to come down too often...

i wish I could give you more advice on the post operative care for Paka Tom, but with Kerren and Holly keeping an eye out for you, you are definitely in good hands with their words of advice. (Love the pictures of pee puddles Holly and Purrkins, that's purfect! 😂)

looking forward to more positive pee updates Paka Tom, try not to worry Mama too much okay?! Stay strong mtanashati boy, eat and drink lots and remember keep pee'ing!!! 🚰💦🚰💧🚰🌊

Love the pictures of Purrkins with his heat pack, what a little prince! He is soaking it all up isn't he?! What a lover!

Sloppy kisses from Mbwa Stewie👅🐾

Dear Paka Tom - you peed! At least we know your plumbing works well and you did use the litter box once at home. Tiny steps...

Holly is right, please don't follow Mona's example for pee recovery. Her healing went well in that she did not need a cone, or shirt because she did not fuss with the stitches. She loved a warm, damp facecloth placed over the incision while I brushed and massaged her. But Mona is not a good example for using a litter box. She did show off by using a litter box for the vet. She would not use the litter box at home which had new litter in it. When Mona had to pee she would pee everywhere but the litter box. When she escaped from her room she raced upstairs and peed on the carpet in a corner. My other cat Eli, who'd been serving as her protector, raced after her and when he saw what she was doing he backed up with an aghast look on his face. oh-my Her prize for creativity was when she jumped into a desk drawer and peed there.way-confused She finally accepted the litter box when I tossed out the new litter and replaced it with the old litter from the garbage. Also, she would not go in the litter box but would balance herself on the edge to create a water fall into the litter. Then she'd lean over the edge to cover it up with the litter.

So dear Tom, it's okay to pee anywhere at the vet clinic and in your litter box. Please don't get creative. smiley As Tom feels better he will want to interact and move more. Even to spend some time in the sun with Tom on Mama's lap will lift his spirits. We all know the healing power of the sun.

SuperStu has great pee-enhancing icons and Holly's happy pee icons are great, perhaps one can be added to the smiley list!

Hahahaha I think those pee icons are my new favourite thing in the world! Purrkins you are SO cute with your warm compress! Paka Tom is very disinterested in both hot and cold compresses, but I think I will try the warm one again in the night when it gets a little cooler. Also Holly I will make sure to search for Gerbers in the shops here - I had no idea cats could eat baby food, much less enjoy it! That's so interesting!

Aw Petra did Spike actually pass out at the vet? That must have been horrifying for you as well! Poor baby.. I'm glad the vets come home for him, he must be absolutely terrified going there!

And Kerren wow, that sounds like chaos - Paka Tom please don't take notes! But that's really clever of Mona to pee outside and then lean over the edge of the tray to cover up her business. You said she goes in the garden mostly now, yes? When she uses the litterbox does she step inside it now? I'm so grateful that Tom is using the litter properly, climbing in and not making too much of a mess except for the few bits flying out.

Right after I posted yesterday morning I went to check on him and he was very hissy and growly - I figured it was pain and ran to pick some pain meds from the vet. He never eats anything we mix the pill into so we have to give them to him straight. He has found a fancy new trick where he hides the tablet in the side of his mouth and spits it out when you're not looking, but for now the cone catches it so it's easier to spot.

We tried swapping the cone for the DIY tshirt (we had a baby one lying around the house) but it was too loose, and Tom was managing to lick the t-shirt and press it into his stitches if that makes sense.. so I went and got a onesie and have stitched it up, just waiting for him to wake up and I'll do the swap and see how he fares!

Image Enlarger

He has been peeing once a day (not the most frequent), but at least something is coming out! He also desperately tries to lick his bum after, but he can't reach over the cone so he sits with his leg up and gives the cone a thorough lick. I hope he thinks it's working!

Also we have discovered the poor baby has fleas! I don't know where he got them from but he is incredibly itchy and we are going to the vet first thing tomorrow to have them removed. Tomorrow is also the tentative date for removal of stitches -  I think the wound still looks a little bit raw so I have a feeling they may make us wait another day or two..

He refused to enter his recovery room after the vet visit, so he's in my room at the moment. The bed frame is too low for him to get through with the cone, but he has a brand new closet corner here. Early this morning he got out of the closet and hopped onto my bed to sleep next to me, which feels like a huge victory! He's also been moving around the room a little. It's so heartwarming to see him already being so independent when the stitches haven't even come off yet heart

I'm so optimistic about his new life, and once again asante sana to you all for making me see that he would be better this way! The idea of taking his leg seemed so terrible but he's already showing so much promise. Upendo, hugs and purrs to you aaallll kiss
