Hello. I am new to the forum and need some advice on my tripawd, Hershey.  He is a 9 year old chocolate lab who had his front right leg amputated after having his paw ran over by a trailer, causing the nerves to be severed. He has been a tripawd for about six years, and just recently started having seizures.  The vet gave him Phenobarbitol and it made Hershey's balance so bad that he had to be helped up and down the stairs and walking was not much easier. He tended to stumble alot.   Per the vet's orders, we have reduced the dosage and his balance seems to be better. I am looking for other owners who have dealt with a tripawd having seizures so maybe I could know what to expect. He had already had some hip pain that we have kept under control with a dose of Prevacox. I just want to make my dogs remaining time as comfortable as I can, so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to Tripawds, your future posts will not have to wait for approval.

I didn't have seizure experience with my Tri-pug, but my quad pug Tani has hydrocephlus and has been prone to seizures for 12 years. She has been on pheno since diagnosis at age two. She was quite sleepy and wobbly when she first started on the meds, but as her body got used to them she got more stable on her feet. She has mobility problems because of her brain damage, and now has really bad arthritis, but at her dose the pheno doesn't really cause problems. I guess the key is being on the lowest dose that controls the seizures.
Does the vet know what is causing the seizures? Is there an underlying issue that means Hershey will need the pheno forever?

AYeah, part of the solution as Karen said, is getting the dose as low as possible

In the meantime, perhaps oneof the various harnesses available o here may help And it's a good idea to get him ised to one anyway to help him as he ages or as arthritis sets in.

Sending you and your beautiful Hershey all the best.

Hi Hershey & family, welcome. How cool that he's been a Tripawd for so long and doing well! How else has being a Tripawd for so long affected him, if at all? We're always curious to hear more about long-term three-legged heroes.

I'm sorry you're dealing with seizures. We dealt with them in our pre-Tripawd days, and found that going to a whole foods raw diet took care of the problem. I'm not saying that's the trick to dealing with them (could have been a fluke, who knows?!) but as Karen suggested, finding the underlying reason for the seizures is so important. Work with your current vet to adjust the dosage accordingly, then get another opinion & seek diagnostics to find the true cause of the seizures. Hopefully resolving them will be something easy.
