Hi everyone. Zane's mom, Jenny here.
Zane had his amp 6 weeks ago. His incision has healed beautifully now (finally) with the exception of one hole on the bottom of his incision line. This area had the largest concentration of fluid. The hole is like a donut with the inside opening about the size of a nickel.
He still has some squishy fluid build up, more some days than others. He also has a lot of fluid in his groin area some days. I am thinking thta the tumbling onto his stump side aggravates teh healing and cause more inflammation.
Our vet has suggested that we do hydrotherapy- daily flusing with water. We've used medi honey around the area and then covered the stickiness with a large band aid. It looks adorable- like we are trying to patch an amputation. There is some serum drainage and then yesterday, we noticed a more blood red drainage. Nothing to indicate infection, however.
Have others had problems with the wound not fully closing?

OfflineJenny, that's great that Zane is doing so well! Other than the drainage, though.
Yes, it's pretty common for some folks here to have an incision that just won't close. I would definitely follow your vet's advice and try the flushing. Did s/he say that a bandage was OK to use? Some vets use them, others don't.
Please consider reposting this in "Ask a Vet" so that Dr. Pam can see it too OK?

Vet is ok with using the bandage. It's loose nad air can flow through the sides. I reposted this under the ask a vet section too.
Frustrating to have this open hole as I worry way to much about infections. MRSA is gaining in populairty and is at one of the specialty hospitals that we frequent :(
We had to do a quick amputation because my dane developed a bone infection that we believe he picked up from the hospital where he was having his staging tests done. He was there for 2 days with an open draining incision from an acl hardware removal performed a week earlier. Long story short- he went in walking no problem and came home lame and unable to use his leg at all within 24 hrs. After 2 weeks, he never regained use and was in a lot of pain. We opted to do amputation at another location.
He's the first wobbler dane that I know of to have an amputation.

OfflineJenny, Cooper developed a hole near his incision early on after his amp. The vet didnt seem extremely worried about it and put a wrap on it. A few days into that it was obvious infection had set in, so just keep close tabs with your vet and really watch it daily, I would think from what we experienced you will know it if infection does set in. This whole amputation thing seems kind of tricky from one day to the next.. it seems like you can worry both too much and not enough. I hope your dane heals ok ! Keep us posted!

OfflineOh Zane is such a trooper! Wow, that had to have made your head spin, we are so sorry.
We actually do know of another Wobbler Dane who was a Tripawd. In fact, he was our inspawration for going forward with my amputation. If it wasn't for Moose, Tripawds wouldn't exist!
Here is a link to a great story his Dad wrote about him. You can also search for his Dad in my Facebook page, his name is Joel Craig.

Ok Cool. Loved the story of Moose in the parade. Moose is a tripawd that became a wobbler and Zane is a wobbbler that became a tripawd. Moose had such a late onset of spinal problems that I am curious to know what areas were affected. I'll try to contact Joel. Generally danes develop wobblers in their growing years (before 2) whereas Dobies do in their middle age (5-8). Dobe wobblers is called late age onset and their form of the disease is totally different than the early onset Dane style. I have investigating to do..woohoo! I own the yahoo group 'neurdogs' for dogs with wobbler syndrome and degenerative myelopathy.
Zane has been a wobbler since he was 10 months old. He has never had the joy of a normal gait or the normal strenth of a typical Dane. He is very tall but due to a fusion of 3 vertebrae in his neck, he holds his head a little lower. Zane has always had challenges walking and making turns however he runs with the best of them. He has neuro deficits in his front right leg making it turn under often when he walks or bends down to sniff the ground. Now with a rear right leg gone, he is quite compromised and falls when the wind blows. He's not letting that hold him back though!
It was a hell of a leap of faith to do the amputation but after seeing him hobble around when his leg was infected and never letting it touch the ground, I figured he had a chance. He had his acl repaired in his rear left leg in 2008 so we are hoping that and his spine hold out. We ordered an EW cart but so far, it's not working out well for him at all. He prefers to hop along, Tigger style.
I shot some video of him this week so I'll post that soon.
