Hi,

I adopted an 11 month old tripod (she'd been hit by car and had right rear leg completely removed) who was 3 months post surgery. Tria is 18 months old now and doing beautifully, except I'm concerned about injury to her underbelly.

She is a 33 lbs speed demon; for every mile i walk in woods she covers at least 3 miles of crashing through the underbrush, zipping here and there. Tria only has single coat of fur and her underside is baby soft and tender. She is constantly scratching up her belly and especially the inside of her remaining leg thigh.

I have looked everywhere on the web for something to provide brush protection, but unfortunately can only find protection for belly and not leg. She's a funny mix of all sorts of things and is very thin with a large neck and chest - she looks like a whippet in build, making it difficult to find outwear for her.

Have anyone here the same problem and maybe some advice?

Many thanks,

Deb

Welcome! Your future forum posts will not require moderation.

Have you searched the Tripawds Gear blog yet? The Webmaster Plus may be just what you're looking for in terms of a harness. You might also consider this Chest Protector,  or the EzyDog Chest Plate.

Search the Tripawds Amazon blog too! You'll find more helpful products there. Dog Leggs are often used to protect elbows from developing hygromas, but may limit movement running about. You may be best off using vet wrap if you have serious concerns.

Hopefully others may have more suggestions for you.

I am also a fan of the Ruffwear Webmaster Plus harness.   It has a cushioned breastplate/belly protector that not only allows you to lift the dog without straps cutting into their body, but also should provide protection against Tria crashing through the woods.   Won't help on the inner thigh, but it is an idea.   Otis is a lab/Dane mix and also very barrel chested - it fits him perfectly, and you can adjust the straps to tighten to the dog's physique.

Otis - 106 pound lab/Dane mix, lost his right front leg to osteosarcoma on Febuary 9, 2016.  Four rounds of carboplatin completed in April, 2016.  Lung mets August 25, 2016.  Said goodbye too soon on September 4, 2016.   Lost his adopted sister, Tess, suddenly on October 9, 2016. likely due to hemangiosarcoma.

Wherever they are, they are together.

Jerry Admin and Otisandtess,

Thank you for your thoughtful and helpful responses. An hour after posting the above, Tria sliced two thirds the way through her front leg upper carpel pad, requiring minor surgery to put in 2 layers of stitches and is restricted leash walks for 2 weeks - ugh. This was not the area i was worried about! God knows how it happened...  I'm

beginning to think I'm going to have to wrap her in bubble wrap to keep her safe. Either that or leash walks only, which I can't imagine this highly adventuresome, need-for-speed doggy will enjoy. Maybe I should be looking into a treadmill. Definitely getting her insurance now.

In the meantime, i checked out the weblinks you sent. The Sylmar products are promising. Thank you!

Oh my gosh Tria is a crazy pup! She's so lucky to have a good momma like you taking care of her. I hope that pad heals fast, it can be a tough area to heal. Yikes!

Yes, pet insurance is GREAT. Do check out our recent podcast with the Pet Insurance expert Dr. Doug Kenney, lots of helpful info there:
