We are searching for advice on how to prepare our home for his return after amputation. We are so torn about our decision to amputate but feel we should give this special dog a chance. He was a rescue and then my husband trained and then had him certified as therapy dog and visits multiple nursing homes and hospice patients. Very well known in our community due to his meeting mailman everyday, retrieving newspaper everyday and helping to bring groceries in. Such a special boy. Any advice to help us with this journey would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Cindy! He does sound so special, thank you for giving him a chance at a happy life on three legs. What's his name? And how old/young is he?

To answer many of your questions we suggest starting with Jerry's Required Reading List . If you want to save time searching, the Tripawds e-books are also a big help. To more directly answer about how to prepare your home, this blog post will help:

Oh gosh! I'm in love already with this special boy!!! Can't wait to see pics of him and hear more about him!!

We are all here by your side to support you in anyway we can. Itsw an aagonizing decision we are forced to make. Recovery is no picnic. But once surgery is done and you have this sweet boy home, you will be soooo relieved!

A painful leg is gone and his sparkle will come back bigger and brighter than before!! 🙂 Yoursweet pup will have many more happy times greeting the mailman and spreading his goodwill to everyone he meets!! 🙂

MAKE EVERY DAY COUNT! Your pup lives in the moment and every moment is an eternally bliss for him with you by his side loving and spoiling him! Dogs don't count days n the calendar and theyn sure don't have a timeframe stamped on their butts!

Make sure you have non-slip scatter rugs for traction if you have hardwood floors. Block off any stairs and don't let him jump up on furniture...for now anyway! Rest, rest, rest and short leashed potty breaks for the first two weeks.

Yiy may have to set up a mattress on the floor to sleep by him for the first couple of weeks.

Keep lots of CHOCOLATE on hand for you! Just a couple of quick tips!

Update us when you can. When is surgery?

Lots of hugs!

Sally and Alumni Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle and Frankie too!

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!

I would say from my experience:

Yes - traction for the floor.  Cheap yoga mats or carpet runners have been so key.

Also, no steps I agree.  We were too zealous thinking Homer could do steps but really as a front tripawd it was best that we just block him from going upstairs.  Up is easy - down .... not so much!  what-ever
