ORT’s (odor recognition tests) are the first step in Nose Work before you can compete in Trials. The three odors are birch, anise and clove, each ORT has a 3 minute time limit. The tests show that the dog recognizes the specific odors used in searches and that the handler can read their dog. We are working under the NACSW rules.
Last Saturday we went to Napa to do two ORTs, we passed one last November.
Our first ORT was for anise. On the plus side Elly wasn’t intimidated by being in new surroundings with strangers, she has been nervous in the past in those circumstances. The down side is that she wasn’t at all interested in searching for odor! When we did our first ORT last November (birch) she went right to work and found the hot box in less than 7 seconds. She has been a little erratic during practice lately and she hasn’t worked with anise or clove nearly as much as birch so I was thinking it might take a pass or two… but I thought she would at least go to work. First time through the boxes she didn’t even look at them! She wanted to explore the other rooms and then she found a fascinating smell on the floor. So I took her back to the beginning and started again. This time she went past 3 boxes and hung a hard left and went back to the smell on the floor. I reeled her in and we started again. This time she was on it and working- you can see her checking the boxes. Once she actually started working it took about 15 seconds to find the hot box. Although it would have been better if she was focused right from the start I was pleased that I stayed calm and focused and I was able to get her focused and working within the time limit.
Our next ORT was clove. This time she was working from the start. We did one pass on all the boxes without her alerting me. We turned and did a pass in the reverse direction until she found the hot box. We have spent very little time working with clove so it doesn’t surprise me it took her a couple passes to alert.
Nose Work is an awesome sport for Tripawds even if you never compete. It’s a challenge for the mind, it is tiring without too much stress on the body and it does wonders for a pup’s confidence.

FASCINATING!! ABSOLUTELY FASCINATING!!! This was sooo much fun to warch! I felt like I was st the event in person! I was quietly holding my breath as she did her thing...ELLY'S WAY!!
Really glad you "set it up" for us so we could follow exactly what was going on. We really could tell the difference when she decided to "go to work" versus just checking out random "sniffs of interest". When she was searching for the Clove, my unprofessional untrained eye thought she found it a couple of different times. Then when she REALLY und it and gave you her full attention and focus, then I could see the difference.
And you sure did maintain a calm, cool, patient demeanor the e tire time. We could feel it through the screen!!
What you have done with this Pug Mutt is nothing short of miraculous! No one would ever believe she had any "issues" at all! She prances with such confidence!!

I always wanted to try this with mine. I know Cow Maggie's mom Tracy does scent work with her girls. She does some sort of games, Wag it Games, or something like that with them. It's pretty interesting.
