Hi everyone.

This is my first post.
My dog Cara has been amputated in september (she hadbone sarcoma on her front right leg). For a few weeks she was doing pretty great : could walk, was jumping etc. She is a 14 yo miniature pinscher.
A week ago, she started to fall down everytime she wanted to stand up. She seems to have no strength in her remaining leg.
She was taking previcox this week and the vet has prescribed prednicortone + topalgic (the treatment started basically this morning).
When you try to touch her, she can cry or show she's not happy.
Right now she can't be standing on her 3 legs more than a few seconds.

She still has great appetite and with anti-inflammatory drugs, she's doing "okay".

My questions :
-Has anyone ever had this kind of situation on this forum?

-Do you have any recommandation to help her recover from that?

Any help is welcome. Thanks a lot for reading this and sorry for the english.

Hi Cara and family, thanks for registering as a member. Your future posts won't need approval so post away. Your English is perfect, no apologies necessary 🙂

I'm sorry she's having mobility problems right now. Many new Tripawds do well at first but if they're doing too much too soon, the activity will catch up with them and they'll have difficulties. What kinds of things did she do when she appeared to be well again? How long were her walks? Do you have other dogs she plays with throughout the day?

Yes this situation is common (we see this happen all the time here) and it's usually treatable with rest and pain management . At 14 years old, Cara should have extra TLC right now as she recuperates, and then later on as she gets back to her life on three legs.

Where are you located? I'm just curious because I haven't heard of prednicortone, but I see it's a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory, similar to Previcox. Did the vet have any other advice, such as how long the drugs may take to work, and what the treatment plan is if they don't?

If you are able I strongly recommend taking Cara to a canine rehabilitation therapist for another evaluation and a plan to help her get strong. Pain relief with drugs are just one part of the puzzle of solving acute pain like this. Other things you can do for her are acupuncture, massage, passive range of motion exercises, etc., but all should be done under the guidance of a professional until her pain is under control. We can help you find a provider if you'd like to let us know where you are located.

Hi Jerry, thanks a lot for your warm welcome :).
I live close to Paris, France.
Tomorrow we're going to a bigger clinic (Fregis Clinic) to do a scan/IRM. We'll have another evaluation and they seem to provide more options (hydrotherapy...). I'll keep you posted.

Yes Prednicortone is similar to Previcox but stronger.

If you do have any recommandation around Paris-Boulogne Billancourt, please let us know :).

Wow I just looked up Fregis Clinic, it looks like exactly the kind of place where you want to take Cara. I see their Orthopedic department looks fantastic and the DO have physiotherapie! The vets at Fregis should definitely be able to help with diagnosing and treating whatever it is that's bothering her. I couldn't recommend a better place, Cara is a lucky girl 🙂

We will wait for word to see how she's doing. Good luck!
