Hello, we rescued a tri pawed dog last year, his back paw was amputated when he was 2.  He's 13 and over the past month or so, his paw is going out instead of in, which is causing him to fall, etc.  I have started the therapy the vet is having me do, but his paw still isn't right.  crying He loves to run around and I just feel so bad for him.    Does anyone know of any other exercises I can use on him.  Thanks in advance.

Hi Cheri, thanks for joining. What's your dog's name?  What kind of breed is he? Big? Smalll? He sounds like he's been pretty good so far, sorry to hear he's having mobility issues. He's very fortunate to make his way to a loving family like yours.

Tell us more about the exercises your vet asked you to do with him. Have you talked to the vet about his current issues? If not that's the best place to start. You want to be very careful with a senior dog to ensure you don't do more harm than good, so trying any exercises your vet isn't aware of may be risky. If your vet isn't a certified canine rehab therapist, please consider seeing one. The Tripawds Foundation will even reimburse you for your first visit. See:

We hope you'll post some photos of your amazing rock star senior Tripawd! Here are tips about adding images to the forums. Let us know if you'd like assistance OK?

Hi Cheri, and welcome!

Ditto Jerry re finding a rehab vet. That's been an absolute godsend for us. Would also love to hear more about your boy. When you say his paw was amputated, do you mean just his paw or his whole back leg? Do you know much about what his routine was like before he came to you? Just wondering re his activity level. And yes please, pics would be fantastic.... smiley

Sending all best to both of you,

Hi Everyone!

Thanks for all the welcomes.  We got Harley as a rescue from Muttville Senior Dog Rescue.  We had at one time a litter of beagles and we kept all of them because I would cry every time someone would come look at them.  The last of the beagles Flash is the only one left, he will be 17 in March and is as peppy as a puppy.  We first got Savannah from Muttville and at that time Harley was there, and had been there for many months.  Muttville is a no kill shelter which if you did not know San Francisco is all a no kill city.  About three months after Savannah I went onto Muttville's page and poor Harley was still there.  I was worried about having wood floors and stairs to get up to the bedrooms but Muttville assured me he was fine on hard surfaces and could navigate stairs so my husband said, let's make sure this boy has a good home for his remaining years.

Harley was really good for almost 2 years.  We went on vacation and had dog sitters stay at our house so the babies had company all the time.  When we got home I noticed then that Harley's rear paw, which is his only, was pointed out instead of in which is how he maintains his balance.  My only thoughts are that when he comes in the doggie door, he doesn't have himself straight and his paw gets stuck.  I'm here daily so it isn't an issue, I just go out and pick him up and put him in, but then he's all excited and starts to run and he can't with his paw sticking outwards oh-my  When we had gotten him they gave us a sheet of physical therapy to give to him if he started having problems.  So as soon as we got back I started that but it isn't helping him.  I then took him to our vet and he said that because of his age his bones are starting to atrophy in his back quarter.  crying  Over the past few days, he seems to be agitated, doesn't sleep well at all and paces around a lot and hangs by me.  The vet prescribed Tramadol which I was giving him but didn't seem to help, so we're assuming he isn't in pain.  Last night I gave him a melatonin thinking it would help him sleep but it didn't.  I always find him downstairs in the morning, and when he sees me he gets so excited and then he blows out because he tries to run.  We've learned to walk slow when he's with us to avoid that.  I love my Harley boy, but I'm starting to wonder if age related signs are going to be his problem.  sad

Below are the exercises I am using on Harley, directly from the physical therapist.

My therapeutic goal is to resolve his back pain and strengthen his core and hind leg muscles to protect the joints.

HOME EXERCISES
If your dog seems tired during the rest of the day, keep up that level of exercise. If your dog seems sore the next day or hesitates/refuses to do the exercise, decrease the intensity of the exercise by 1/2 and then gradually increase.
Immediately after an exercise your dog's posture and transitions should be the same or better than they were before the exercise.
PASSIVE RANGE OF MOTION:
- to improve flexibility
Start with your dog lying on their side with the side to be exercised facing up and the leg parallel to the floor. Starting with the toes, flex and extend the joints through their natural range of motion. Hold the position at the end of their comfortable flexion and extension for 5 seconds. Next moving up the leg to the wrist/ankle and then the knee/elbow, all the way to the shoulder/hip.
Padded floor space is essential for performing passive range of motion and floor exercises.
COOKIE STRETCHES WHILE LYING LATERAL = neck and upper back bend. With the animal lying his side, hold a treat alongside and behind the shoulder blade and at the hip.  As the dog reaches for the treat it strengthens muscles and stretches the neck.  Keep the treat out of reach for 5 to 10 seconds to hold the stretch.
It's best to perform this exercise on both the right and left side regardless of where the animal is injured. This ensures the animal will increase weight bearing on its injured side.
.

If the exercise causes discomfort (for example, it’s quite painful for dogs with bad hips when the rear leg is extended backward), do not continue to a painful point. Ideally 5-10 flex/extensions are performed on each joint and this is done 1 to 2 times daily.

I tried to put some pictures in of him, but I don't understand the process, normally you just upload directly from your computer, so I will try to copy and paste them in here.  smiley   We copy and past didn't work oh-my

Thanks!

Cheri

Thanks for the tip on the pictures.  We're taking Harley to the vet in 10 min, so will update later on and hopefully add some pictures also.

Sorry I never answered after Harley's vet visit.  The vet determined that he had an ear infection, which I kinda knew he did, but that it wasn't internal so that would have nothing to do with his balance.  He didn't notice he's losing muscle in his rear paw, hence the hopping around.  I bought him so pet socks and they work amazing.  He runs around and doesn't lose his footing.  I'll go back now to how to add images and put pictures up of my tri boy!  Thanks!  Cheri

What great news!  Only here do we applaud ear infections and socks!

Otis - 106 pound lab/Dane mix, lost his right front leg to osteosarcoma on Febuary 9, 2016.  Four rounds of carboplatin completed in April, 2016.  Lung mets August 25, 2016.  Said goodbye too soon on September 4, 2016.   Lost his adopted sister, Tess, suddenly on October 9, 2016. likely due to hemangiosarcoma.

Wherever they are, they are together.
