So here is the liver cake recipe. I've translated it into American. We use grams rather than cups, and Centigrade not Fahrenheit. Just don't blame me if it turns into a liver meringue... (not sure what people use in Canada/Australia/elsewhere, but hopefully...)

Re the garlic: I know there are different views on this. Meg's holistic vet is very pro, and she loves it, so we use it, but if you're not so inclined, you can leave it out, no problem.

MegaWheels Rockin' Rollin' Liver Cake

Ingredients

500 g (1.1 lbs) liver (I buy organic when possible, because liver absorbs toxins, and no liver is terribly expensive)

2 eggs

180 g (3/4 cup) self raising flour (you can also use oatmeal, which gives a chewier texture)

1/2 garlic clove (optional)

Whack it all in the blender, until it looks something like a liver smoothie then slop into a lightly oiled baking tray. It should be like a thick gloop. If it's too thin, add some more flour. If it's too thick, add a splash of milk. This is not an exact science.

Smooth it off with a spatula, and stick it in the oven for about an hour on 150ºC (300ºF). It may need another fifteen minutes or so. You want it firm but not like a giant biscuit. Lol.

It's easiest to cut while still warm, so slice into small squares.

You can freeze it and it basically lasts forever, except it won't because your dog will wolf it so fast, you'll be cooking up another batch in no time.

Enjoy!

The MegaWheels Day 3

Thanks so much everyone for your enthusiasm and encouragement. It makes SUCH a difference and I love being able to share this process with you.

Today, Meg was much more iffy again. Resisted going in the wheels, though I persisted and we got there. My suspicion is that they may need some adjustment. I don't think they are taking much, if any, weight off her front leg at the moment. And unless they do, it's going to be hard for her to appreciate what the point is. Adjustment and readjustment is part of the process, of course, but according to how Meg is standing, back legs wider apart or closer together, lower or higher on that front leg, different bits of her go up and down. She's basically a giant slinky. This makes it hard to get the cart level, which is the aim.

I videoed her from the side and sent it to Eddie's Wheels for advice. Feeling slightly overwhelmed, which is silly as it's only day three, and it's obviously going to take time.

Here's a pic from the side. We'll ignore her long-suffering expression, and the fact I need to do some weeding urgently.... those side bars should be horizontal. But if you lower the front, then she'll be getting no support at all. You can see she has her back legs splayed. Which is obviously lowering the MegaRump. I'm waiting to hear back from Eddie's Wheels. I know it will get sorted, I just want it sorted NOW. Which is ridiculous, I realise.

I love your recipe  terms......whack it in a blender.....slop it in a tray.....and best of all, I love the name of the recipe 😃😃

And as always...the PERFECT picture of Meg licking her liver debris!😎

I cannot even begin  to imagine how difficult it mist be to get the right fit.  Cannot even imagine how on earth it can be done!  The different stances, the different terrain, the turns....geez.

To use a phrase  we use so often here....it's  very early (in recovery) and Meg, and you, are already ahead of the curve.   Your patience  and determination are far more than mine would be!  Of course, you jave an extra challenge  in that Meg is just as determined  to do things her way!  Kinda' reminds me of a hound dawg in Virginia 🤣

You may have covered this before.  Are you doing this now as sort of a preventative  measure,  or more as practice  if it's  needed in the future?  Not sure I'm  making sense.

Thank you for keeping a "journal " here. Not only is it interesting, but it will be very helpful  for anyone needing this type of support.

Hmmmm......what would Elsie Pie be thinking about all this?  Bet you have a good picture and caption to depict her thoughts!   Waiting.....

Ok, that liver cake recipe is da bomb! Looks like da Pie sure loved it! I'm sure that giant biscuit will just fill our recreational vehicle home with the stench of stinky liver for weeks, which Wyatt will love but us not so much. But he's worth it! I cannot wait to give it a try.

Meanwhile, thank you for filling us in on the process of determining when a cart fits just right. I can't blame you for feeling a bit frustrated, it's not like buying a new pair of shoes and that's that. Custom carts are custom for a reason. Once you get the fit, they work like a charm and soooo much better than anything off the shelf.

Meg will soon discover the benefits, thanks to your persistence and patience. Do let us know what Eddie's Wheels says about her stance and the fit, I'm totally curious about the process. Thanks!

Thank you SO much for the encouragement.

Sally, the plan is to start using them now. Not all the time, but... Meg is definitely less mobile and less comfortable than she was say six months ago. She has quite bad arthritis in her front foot, as well as the dysplasia and arthritis in her elbow (on top of the IOHC). These will take some of the weight off that leg and enable the over-active rest of her to still get plenty of exercise and stimulation. It was her rehab vet who suggested it. As for persistence and determination, YOU are our inspiration!

Petra, you are so sweet. Your posts are like hugs. I speak pretty good Yorkshire, having lived there in my early childhood. Ee yer a reet gradley lass!

Rene, I love the image of clouds of liver stench billowing out of the RV. You will have a trail of dogs following along behind you.... More on Eddies Wheels response below...

The MegaWheels Day 4

What a difference a day makes! Claire from Eddies Wheels got back to me, having reviewed the pics and video I sent her. I have to say the speed of their responses, and their customer service in general is quite superb. She suggested raising the harness (which holds up Meg's chest), and also tightening the soft yoke (which sits over her rump). This latter was completely counterintuitive to me. Which is why I'm not an engineer. Anyway, I did as instructed. I didn't think I could raise the harness any more, but I followed the instructions and succeeded in raising it considerably (She even offered for me to send her a photo of the harness and she would mark it up using a paint programme - this is what I mean by great service!) I also loosened the tip strap, which goes across under her tummy.

I didn't want to try it again yesterday, because I felt that Meg needed a break (as did I) but first thing this morning, out we went to give it another go. One very good sign, I think, is that when I pick up the cart to take it outside (and the liver cake with it), Meg immediately follows me out. She does not appear to have any negative feelings about the cart. The liver cake is doing its job admirably – I am only giving it to her when we are working with the cart. A cunning plan, I feel....

This morning there was no resistance at all. In fact, Meg all but jumped into the cart herself, setting her front paw on the push bar. The adjustments have, as if by magic, set the cart on a level, and she is moving really well in it, even turning corners, and manoeuvring over uneven ground. The rear of the harness was still rather loose, so I raised this once I had taken her out. We'll see what effect this has tomorrow.

Loosening the tip strap now means that Meg can pick up treats lying on the ground. She couldn't before, which worried me because she gets so much stimulation and enjoyment from sniffing the ground. I'd hate to think of her not being able to do that, but she's fine now. She can even touch the ground with her nose.

Here's a video of Day 4's antics, and a couple of pics. These are stills from the video, so not great quality, but I like them nonetheless. I'll be able to take better video and pics, when I no longer need to be so focused on helping and encouraging Meg, but they do at least serve to record our progress and give you an idea.

Clare,

Thank you for sharing the liver cake recipe with us.

Eddie Wheels seems to be awesome with their customer service.  I agree it looks like Meg is doing a little better with the adjustments.  I did notice on the last video after the adjustments the wheels seem to be moving a lot better.  I think the first video (if my mind is correct) it didn't seem like the wheels were rolling.  Meg was pushing them.  I think with a little bit of fine tuning she will be off and you will not be able to keep up with her and the Meg-a-Wheels.

Keep sharing.  I love that you are documenting so that others can use this information if needed.

The last video did me in. You are such a team, and you have so much to be proud of Clare.. it is amazing the trust that Meg has in you. And you can see in your pictures ( lol, your not so great picture is like the best I could ever take!!) that she knows you are doing this FOR her. She just totally gets it, and now that she has figured out what you are both doing I think she is having some fun with it.

In that last video when she paused, I got the feeling that she is maybe using different muscles than she is used to with this cart correcting her posture. I would not at all be a little surprised if like us, the new workout may tucker her out a little bit.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for the liver cake recipe!! I have all the ingredients now and I will be making some liver cake for Mitchell and clan. Have you made it for them with oatmeal and do they have a preference if you have? I am trying to keep any carbs to whole grain because of our special bladder issues (Mitch and Andy). What I read says the lesser processed whole grains are better for them so David got me some whole grain oatmeal to throw in the blender with the rest of the ingredients winker

What you are doing here is going to be such a help to anybody that finds the need to move forward with a set of wheels. The learning process seems so overwhelming, and every time you tweak it, it just shows that it can be done with time and patience. You are doing such an awesome job, thank you for not only documenting the process, but showing people how to make the process a positive change in such a precious life. Meg was truly blessed when she met you.
