Our Dane had a leg removed due to bone cancer 4 months ago, she is doing so well. she doesn't let much slow her down. But lately we have been noticing a lot of weight lose, to the point that she is looking unhealthy. I have made a vet appt for this Saturday but we live in a small town and our vet doesn't see a lot of dogs that have been through a leg amputation. Just wondering if any one else has noticed weight loss with their dogs. I am hoping she is just using a lot more energy getting around. I have increased her food intake for the last two weeks and I m not seeing much improvment. Not looking forward to the vet appointment….

This could indeed be the case, especially with large breeds, since tripawds must exert much more energy without their spare leg. We hope this is the case too. Try to remain pawsitive, and let us know whet the vet says. Hopefully others will have better feedback for you.

Trouble had her amputation in late November 2008 and finished her chemo in March 2009.  In that period of time, she went from 69# to 55#. No diet, no real diet change.  The difference, probably is that she needed to loose the weight.  Fifty-five actually took her to a healthy weight.
