OMC!!! Just adorable. And she has such a determined expression. This little chick will go far, I'm certain of it!

Ruby, Staffy, born June 2022, became a Tripawd, 23 November 2023, adopted 12 January 2024.

Also Angel Tripawd Meg (aka The Megastar), who died in April 2023, aged 14, after seven glorious years on three, and Angel Staffies Pie and Bille. In the pawprints of giants...

Oh my gosh , she is too cute.

Very neat on her vibrating her leg how smart is that! Wow

Una isn't falling forward but sideways? So interesting, That would make sense with the one leg.

Yep ,her leg will get alot stronger then her sisters. It's got more weight to bear, alot more work for the tripawd or I'm not sure what we call Una a unapawd? Unipawd? Monopawd. Lol maybe someone else will have the name. I say we call her Unapawd 😍

Interesting on the hatching, She was determined to come into this world, so glad she has you as her human!

Its not just chicks that sit on your laptop lol I always have always have a tripawd cat on mine.

Ditto on the spoiling our tripawd, quad , unapawd , lap chicken🎉

Thank you for sharing her with us!

Hugs,

Ohhhh, I love that little Una.

After her amputation my cat Mona initially spun in circles when she tried to get up quickly. She also had many face plants. They eventually learn how to balance.

Thanks of loving Una for all of us!

Una's made more excellent progress the last few days! (I think I say that every post. Isn't it great when all you have is good news to share?)

Both chicks have been growing rapidly, as baby chicks are wont to do. 2 weeks old! Wing feathers are all in, great for Una's balance. She uses her wings a lot more than Gloria, even though Gloria can fly-jump onto our heads already. (Gloria still has all white feathers??? None of our chickens or the neighbors' are all white. Huh.)

Just in the last few days, Una has made the following achievements:

  • Much better stability. She no longer feels the need to lean against the wall/my leg as much and will venture off on her own or with Gloria during our "field trips" outside. She also doesn't have to be as careful -for example, she can climb onto my lap and jump back to the ground without "crash landing."
  • Greater stamina. I think the leaning has also decreased because she doesn't get tired as quickly, and she sits a lot less. She stands almost as much as Gloria, in fact.
  • More control. I've seen some people on this site saying their tripawds had an easier time going fast than going slow; that's been true for Una as well, but she's gotten much better at small, neat hops. More like "steps." In fact, during her best stretches someone watching from above might not even be able to tell she's one-legged! She's gotten better at straight lines as well.

Here's some more pictures, and a video (I've never done much with videos on computers, so we'll see how it goes). The first one is my favorite picture of her so far, it's from a few days ago:

These other ones are from this afternoon.

chicks-outside-2-1-1-17.jpg

I couldn't figure out how to put the movie directly in the post, so here's the YouTube link:

The video's from my phone, sorry for crappy quality! Also, she's doing really well in this video, but she was doing even better (walking straighter, etc.) this morning. She tends to get more tired throughout the day. They really like the outside weather and hunting for bugs, so it's good motivation for her to move!

Posting the youtube video works great. It's the only way I know how to do it.

Both Una and Gloria are beautiful. When standing I don't notice that Una has only one leg because I'm so focussed on her beauty. She does the typical missing-leg-hop and obviously it won't stop her.

Happy bug hunting Una and Gloria. Thank you for continuing to share their progress with us.

ABSOLUTELY ADORABLE PICTURES AND VIDEO!!!

And I loooove the care and attention you are giving her!! You are so astute to notice every little improvement, every little maneuver she teaches herself to manage her day to day lifestyle!!

Make no mistake about it! Miss Una is here to guide you on a path that your Soul was meant to follow!! Not sure if that makes sense, but it's just a "feeling" I felt compelled to share!

Anyway, you are doing a stellar job of caring for Una and motivating her to be all she can be!! And gorgeous Glori is right there by her side growing into a splendid gal!!

So enjoying following Gloria and Una on this delightful journey! 🙂 🙂

I love their little fluffy feathers, and I guess Una has decided to answer your question about how well a one legged chicken will do quite definitively!

Otis - 106 pound lab/Dane mix, lost his right front leg to osteosarcoma on Febuary 9, 2016.  Four rounds of carboplatin completed in April, 2016.  Lung mets August 25, 2016.  Said goodbye too soon on September 4, 2016.   Lost his adopted sister, Tess, suddenly on October 9, 2016. likely due to hemangiosarcoma.

Wherever they are, they are together.

Omigosh I just read this thread! She is adorable! I'm so glad you are her person, rather than the poultry forum folks. I mean, I can understand "culling" in a commercial environment, but not when someone is keeping them basically as productive pets. She's fabulous! How is Gloria with her? I've had parrots and parrotlets, and I had a sad situation once where one parrotlet killed the other, I think because it had a slight injury. But Gloria and Una look to be getting along just fine.

Thank you so much for all the kind comments!! They are very uplifting.

Lawcat, Gloria has been very good with Una. Maybe it's just that they've been together, with no one else, pretty much from the start. I raised a chick once that had severe slipped tendon leading to an entirely backwards leg; rescued her from culling at the feed store & bought another chick for company. That chick was never a bully either (and the issue, even though it looked really bad, was fixed with a little PT). The really young chicks tend to be nice, in my experience. What remains to be seen is whether they'll stay friendly as young teens. That's the worst age for bullying for chickens AND humans!

Speaking of Gloria, I have some news: I am almost certain that "she" is a little roo! Fortunately we can keep boys in our area and we have room for 1 more in our flock right now! Between the behavior (jumping onto/out of everything) and the bumpy little comb and wattles, I'm pretty positive. So now we've got to give him a new name! I'm deciding between Gordon, Galaxy and Geronimo; I'm gonna watch him some more and decide which suits him best.

Image Enlarger

Whoo, look at that pea comb! Look how much bigger it is than Una's! You can't see his wattles, but they're comin'. 🙂

They're definitely turning into teens...the feather tracts on their flanks, chests & down the middle of their backs are coming in. Pictures are gonna be less cute from here on out, lol. Look out for too-big feet and awkward mangy fluff patches poking through the feathers.

I see gloria's pea comb now. Glad you have room for another roo!

I like all the names you have picked out for him.

Keep the pictures and updates coming they will be just as cute as they grow to us! 😍

We have to see how they grow and hop on!
