I have a 7 mos old shepherd mix that was amputated 4 mos ago. Overall she gets around great and even digs in the yard! The problem I have is with a dog door that we have from our garage to the back yard. She will go thru fine as long as the flaps are taped up but won't/can't (??) with the flaps down. My dogs have heated kennels in the garage area (heated for winter) and come and go on their own while we are gone during the day. I need to be able to close the dog door flaps for winter or another solution like another type of door to accommodate Penny. Thanks in advance for your ideas.

Is Penny your dog's name? How come she lost a leg? Do tell!

Do you think maybe she got into a scuffle or something, before the surgery, that could be making her fearful now? It sounds to me like with the right treats and some dedicated training (i.e., you on the other side coaxing her to go through for the BEST TREAT EVER!) she can overcome this.

Hi jerry. Yes penny is the pup. She was a foster and apparently her leg was broken before or during when she was turned in. Growth plate for one of the bones closed. We (my girls) fell in love with her. And once she recovered and came home, she was home for good. We adopted her and that makes 3 dogs, 11 paws. We started with the flap of the dog door up because she was so small. Then because she was recovering. So she never learned to go thru the door before she lost her leg. She thinks she's the boss. Big dogs mostly let her get away with everything. They don't have many problems. I think we left it taped open too long. We have been working with her for a couple of weeks on and off.
