My sweet Saint Odin had his amputation surgery exactly one month ago today on his right front leg.

He had stitches out about 12 days after surgery and had his first chemo session and did amazingly well.  He was walking around like normal and pretty much back to his old self.

When he went to get his blood work done the next week, he passed with flying colors.  His pain meds ran out about the same time.  That was when he started excessively licking and chewing on his foot.  It got to the point where it bled and we took him to our regular vet this past Tuesday.  They bandaged it up and said to keep it dry and clean until Friday.  He just went in today for them to recheck his bandage and the paw was more inflamed.  They have us now soaking his foot twice a day followed by using a powder on it.  He is back on Tramadol (we put him on that the day after his blood test because we assumed that he still had some lingering pain bothering him), and our vet put him back on Carprofen and an antibiotic.

It's so frustrating because he was doing SO WELL and acting like Odin again.  He was following us from room to room and just hanging out.  And then he started on his paw and doesn't really leave the bedroom except to do his business and to eat.  At least now since back on the Carprofen he will get up of his own accord to see if his dinner is ready yet rather than to just wait for us to come get him.

Has anybody experienced this before?  Odin does have a history of licking his paws and working at them (we assume because of allergies), and even once in awhile he would bleed a little bit (like a few drops trailing behind him).  But this was worse.  He's now also been given the big plastic cone, which of course makes him mopey and sad.  Is this all just residual pain?  Our vet seems to think it is, and now he's created this wound/sore which is making him want to gnaw on it more and creating a vicious cycle.

Oh my goodness Odin! Leave that paw alone! Obviously something is bothering him though! OWWEE!

LongThis is his remaining front leg, eight? Long shot, but just wondering if this is the same leg the IV chemo is given...or the same leg blood is drawn?

I would run it by the Onco and see if any additional tests are suggested, or better treatments.

Hopefully others can chime in with more jnput than I.

In the meantime HAPPY ONE MONTH AMPUVERSARY ODIN!! 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 Ice cream for you!! 🙂

I think this is fairly normal. I know Rocky licked a spot raw on his remaining front paw a few weeks after the amputation. I got some cream from his vet and used that for a week or two and the licking largely stopped. I always kind of thought it was a neurological thing dealing with the missing other paw. But that's just a personal theory.

David and Rocky (and Baxter now too!)

Rocky had his right front leg amputated on Valentine's Day 2017 after being diagnosed with osteosarcoma.

He joined the September Saints on September 3, 2017.

He is the toughest, bravest, sweetest and best friend I'll ever know.

Could it be a psychological reaction to stress/confinement? My Meg started obsessively licking her foot when she was confined for a long time following multiple surgeries. In her case, I don't think it was a physical problem and it resolved itself once she was able to resume more of her normal activities. Might it be possible to do some mental activation games with Odin? Meg loves the Nina Ottosson ones and they did help to tire and distract her.  Also maybe just going for a ride in the car for a change of scene or encouraging friends to come and visit. Just a thought. Do hope Odin perks up soon.

Eurydice got an infection in her foot, while doing chemo.  I seem to recall it was something picked up in the park in some way.  Is Odin doing chemo?  It can lower their resistance to infections.

Otis - 106 pound lab/Dane mix, lost his right front leg to osteosarcoma on Febuary 9, 2016.  Four rounds of carboplatin completed in April, 2016.  Lung mets August 25, 2016.  Said goodbye too soon on September 4, 2016.   Lost his adopted sister, Tess, suddenly on October 9, 2016. likely due to hemangiosarcoma.

Wherever they are, they are together.

Well, his foot is still nasty looking, but definitely better than it was.  We soaked with the soap they gave us (so now his foot is blue, too!).  Still wearing the cone, which has him all depressed.  He has round 2 of chemo tomorrow so maybe those doctors can offer some advice.  Poor guy has a cold, too--long snot trails running from his nose.  I just wish he could catch a break!

Well, his foot is looking better, so that's good.

Yeah, check with the Onco about everything going on. It ay make sense to delay the 2 d chemo a week and give his immune system a chance to perk up a bit.

Let jpus know, okay? And I. The meantime, continue to spoil the heck out of that ADORABLE fella'!
