Hi guys! I figured I'd ask a few questions since I went out and bought a cone collar replacement and hate it.

Does anyone have anything they like besides the E collar? If Eva's left alone, she licks her residual limb non stop .She's just a compulsive licker and she'll lick anything nonstop really but she makes me REALLY nervous when she starts paying attention to it. So I like to leave the cone on her when I leave for more than an hour but I wanna find something other than the cone. It hurts me to put it on her.

I bought the KONG Cloud, and I hate it. She can't slip it, but she can pull it away from her head enough to where i know it'll get destroyed if i leave her home alone with it lol.

What have you guys used that worked well for a dog that just won't leave it alone? We're two months post op.

We used a soft-cone (looks like an airplane pillow) and that worked great for Shelby. She was a rear-amp and couldn't reach her stitches. Also, we did put her in boxer shorts when the cone came off but honestly, until the stitches were out, it was cone time.

Why are you still needing a cone 2 months post-amp? Does she just tend to lick the spot where her limb was? Is it perhaps phantom issues?

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife

We use the Pro-Collar donut AND a clear cone (we have GSDs so the donut does nothing to deter their long noses from reaching whatever we don't want them to get at). We have been through a bunch of alternatives and nothing else worked for us. I wonder if the clear neck wrap would work on Eva?

Nope that's just Eva. She's a compulsive licker. Blankets, couches, arms, nothing is safe from Eva and when I leave the house she licks it. It's not a problem when i'm gone for a little while but I worry if I'm gone for school (fiveish hours) she'll irritate it. It's easier for my mental sanity to put something on her. Eva gets a xanax prescription, but she still licks.

Edited this to include when she had four legs she would lick her paws incessently. She has licked holes in couch cushions while I'm gone. I just don't want her to lick it until she rips something bloody and then develops an infection due to her weakened immune system.

The Pro Collar is basically what we had. I'm not the biggest fan of that. Her collar now is transparent but I wonder if it's the most comfortable thing to lay around with. That bite not collar looks interesting and worth looking into!

I guess I just feel like the cone sucks for her getting comfy, and I feel bad leaving her like that all day.... But I just would feel like trash if I came home and she had managed to get it raw.... I know I'm a long way past surgery, but still, I can't have any accidents with her. My panic level will not allow it lol.

I had a pup here who absolutely went into a panic first time he got a cone on following neutering.  As he kept trying to worry at his stitches I went out and bought a clear cone with a little padding around the top and bottom ends.

I got him used to it by holding the cone, and treats in my other hand so he had to stick his head through it to get the treats (very food orientated dog, thank goodness).  He was free to take his head out or keep it there for more treats.  Then we'd put it on him and keep up with the treats for a few minutes at a time.  After 2/3 days he was totally happy wearing the cone and we were able to leave him unattended when we needed to without worry.

Don't know if that's of any help to you, but thought I'd add my 2 cents worth. winker

AW! I may have to use this with my little dog. He's getting his rear dewclaws removed next week and I don't think he'll handle the cone well.

Eva does fine with the cone, she's not sad about it or anything. But I just feel guilty, I feel like it's hard to get comfy laying on the couch with. Lol.

Wow that is an awesome way to get a dog used to the cone! I'm going to remember that one. Thank you!

Hope it helps.  Willow was so good after several operations and the amputation, she never needed a cone at all.  Having had many foster dogs since then, I have to say I didn't realise how lucky I was!

I guess I'm lucky, as I haven't had any bad things happen yet. I just am a college student and when I leave for five hours I worry that her boredom and anxiety will get the best of her and she licks for comfort, so I like to know she's unable to when I can't check it incessently lol.

I posted this in another place but if I remember correctly Wyatt had used something like this.  Chris Cora's mom posted about her other dog Floyd needing a cone and it was this one.  I asked here where she got it.  So she gave me the link..

Here ya go
