Boots for front leg amputees?

Hello all,

I would love some thoughts and suggestions around boots for front-leg amputees. This will be our second winter with Cooper, our rescue Tripawd Redbone Coonhound. Last year we did not buy him boots, and his front paw did sometimes get cold in the Quebec winter. They also use a lot of small stones, calcium, salt and such on roads an sidewalks for the ice here and I'm not sure that is so great for his paw cushions.

We just bought him CE Canine Equipment Ultimate Trail Boots, and although I like the idea of skid-proof for ice and protecting his paws from the stones and salt, I find that even after a couple of walks it has modified his walk and he seems to hop more, which has me worried about sprains, more weight on his front leg and an injury resulting from his trying to somehow compensate. I could just be being over-protective though.

Better to not skid and protect cushions or maintain his normal gait? Will he adapt more after more walks?

Would love your thoughts and suggestions!

Many thanks,

A. (and Cooper, Cinta and Colby)

Hello, it's so nice to see you here in the Forums! We've been enjoying your blog! Your future posts won't require approval so post away.

You ask some great questions! You aren't being overprotective at all. Boots aren't right for every dog and it does take time to introduce your dog to them to ensure the boots are a good fit. You want to make sure the boots don't rotate or twist on his foot, because that will definitely cause problems and injuries. If there's any chance you can get him to a rehab vet to analyze his gait, that's the best place to start. Otherwise, how long is he wearing the boots each time? Maybe putting them on him for shorter periods of time each time he wears them would get him more used to the boots.

Thanks for both on your comments and replies! This website and the forums are such an amazing resource for tripawds and the people who love them!

Sally, love your avatar picture as well!

Jerry, thank for the advise, I think that I will get som advice from his specialist vet. He seems to hop more forcefully and stiffen his leg with them on and I really don't want us to create a new issue by trying to protect fro something else.

Thanks both!

Glad to be of help. Let us know what your vet says and in the meantime you might want to check out these Pawz disposable boots; dogs hardly know they're wearing them, we really like them for short term use:

Hi to you and your crew,
My only experience with booties is with Mutt Luks......I bought them for my Polly way before her cancer diagnosis, and amp surgery...( she was a front amp as well )
She developed Immune mediated Thrombocytopenia when she was young, so I wanted to protect her as much as possible from any kind of injury that would cause her to bleed from the ice and snow, and these booties served her very well ....when she had her amp, they worked very well also, to keep her from slipping and sliding in the icy weather. I know there are so many choices out there now, but this was my experience, so I just wanted to let you know what we did.

Best wishes to find something that will work best for you, there will be something that will make you the most happy.
