My 2yr old Dalmatian had a highly infiltrating lipoma on her scapula. I had advice from 3 vets and decided to have the limp amputated, as it appeared to give a better long term outcome. She is now 3 weeks post op and is managing very well, although I have gone from not being able to tire her out to her having had enough after a short amble. But the nights are very disturbed, she wakes several times a night and only settles again after a little walk around and a back massage. The vet doesn't think she is in pain, and I have tried painkillers and they don't seem to make any difference. Any advice

Hello and welcome, your future posts will not have to wait for approval.

3 weeks post op is still pretty early, it will take your girl some time to build up strength and endurance.

My little pug mix Elly lost a rear leg at 7 months old after being hit by a car.  I adopted her at 10 months old and she had puppy energy but her body could not keep up with her.  We started working on core strength through games, food puzzles, balance work and obedience training.  The good thing about all of those is you can really tire them out while gaining strength and balance.

How food motivated is your girl- and what's her name?  I play a 'find it' game with Elly where I hide a small snack somewhere in a room and she has to find it.  It is low impact, works on balance, tires her out and she gets a reward!  We do this at least once a day- in fact we are taking a Nose Work class so I am incorporating some of the things I learn there in our games.

Many dogs here were on pain meds into the third week.  If she isn't in pain or uncomfortable at night it may be that she has extra energy that her body can't burn right now.  Work on her strength and endurance and maybe she will be tired enough to sleep though the night.
