My wife and me were thinking about taking our boys Duke and Connor to a charity walk that benefits canine cancer research. Duke is our sweet tripawd golden retriever with his right rear leg gone due to a car accident when he was two years old (prior to us adopting him). Duke is in really good shape and we're wondering if 2 miles is too much for him. Any thoughts? Thanks!

Hi! Its always fun to walk for a cause.  Here are the things you might want to consider. How old is Duke now and how far does he normally walk on a daily basis? If 2 miles is substantially more than he normally walks then you might not want to do this, even if he is in good shape.

For comparison, we have three rear leg amp GSDs. Austin, at 5, is the least physically fit (he has elbow and hip dysplasia and arthritis so all his remaining limbs are affected). A half mile walk is best for him although he would keep going as long as he can. I have taken him on 1.5 mile walks occasionally and he can do it but it is really too much (e.g. his rear foot starts to drag towards the end). Travis at 6 does 2 miles easily, he is big and strong and in his prime. Codie Rae at 5 could easily walk 2 miles, at 7, she got alternating daily walks of 1 mile and 2 miles, at age 9 (she is going on 10 this year) we cut her back to one mile daily walks and now she even gets a day off now and then and doesn't seem to mind at all.

You know Duke and his abilities best. If you have any questions about his ability to complete the walk then maybe you could enter but monitor him carefully and be prepared to pull him out of the walk if he is showing signs of being tired.

Hope this helps!

What a lpvely thing to do! On behalf of all of us who are on this site as aresult of that nasty disease...THANK YOU!

Good advice from Martha!

Cantw remember who it was, but someone here did so ething similar with tons and tons of rest stops AND using a well cushioned wagon intermittently. I would try and get him conditioned.to a wagon or a big stroller may even be better. Yeah, it took a long time to complete the walk, but there was a standing ovation at the finish line!

DUKE and CONNER sound like great dogs! They are both very lucky to jave you as their humans!

Keep us posted and we would love to see pics of your pups!

Hugs!

Thanks for the replies, everyone!! Duke and Connor go on fairly long walks twice a day so he is in good shape. My wife pointed out that we don't actually have to walk the 2 miles - go a far as we can and that we're still giving to the charity. Our next step is to get them the canine flu vaccine.

I agree that it depends on what your dog is used to. If he is older and/or doesn't walk a lot you might need to take it slow and take some breaks or only do a portion of it.

My guy Champ (~2 year old rear leg amp) goes for a 2 mile walk several times per week. This past week I actually did laps around the dog park (trying to get in better shape myself!) totaling ~7 miles and he stayed with me pretty much the entire time even though he didn't have to.

They really are surprisingly resilient!
