Daisy loves Milkbone soft and chewy treats but my goodness they are expensive at 3.49 a pack.

Does any have a homemade treat recipe that

1. Doesn't have liver or high purine meats (Monkeybutt Samson is a stone former and likes treats too but cant have organ meats)

2. Will cook soft (or at least not cruchy hard)

3. Does not contain peanut butter……neither Princess Daisy or his Highness Samson like peanut putter

Samson is Spirit Tripawd Daisys four legged "brother" and is the self proclaimed head of the Monkeybutt Federations East Coast Division. Lady Chunky Monkey came to live with him after Daisy went to the bridge in Oct 2011 and then Lady left for the bridge in Apr 2012. Samson is once again a bachelor. Do you have what it takes to be a Monkeybutt? Find out more at the Monkeybutt Federation

I think this is the one I used once.  Don't know what I did with the recipe, but grabbed this one from Google – it sounds the same from what I remember.  Mine were kinda soft, but could probably be cooked longer to crispy up a bit.

PUMPKIN WAFERS DOG TREAT RECIPE

Ingredients:

  • One 15 oz. can mashed pure pumpkin (NOT the spiced pie
    filling)
  • 3/4 cup cream of wheat (or rice cereal if wheat-sensitive) You can mix this dry–no need to cook it first
  • 1/2 cup dry powdered milk
  • Directions: Preheat oven to 300 F.

Mix all ingredients together. Drop small spoonfuls (I use about
half of a tablespoon) onto a lightly greased cookie sheet and bake at
    300 degrees for 15-20 minutes.

If you'd like to make bite sized cookies for small dogs, training rewards or just small treats, you can use a pastry bag
    and squeeze out
rosettes about the size of a dime for tasty bite sized cookies!

    Thank you!

I will whip up a batch and let you know if it passes the taste test!

Will the pumpkin make them…um….loose? When Daisy was constipated, the vet recommended a teaspoon of raw pumpkin with meals to help move things along.

Funny thing about pumpkin.  It can work either way.  It is recommended for constipation and for loose stools.

Tika's Salmon Treat Recipe is a good one. They stay firm but not super hard or crunchy and every dog who had them at the Tripawds pawty she was at LOVED them!

Chloe modified it a bit in her version which I'm sure is also great.

P.S. Hope you don't mind we moved this discussion here, just thought it would be easier for people to reference the treat ideas in this "Eating Healthy" forum.
