Hello.

Johnnie finished his chemo - carbo6 - three weeks ago, finally!  as usual, he went through chemo like a champ.  Took cerenia, for three days he had chicken soup instead of regular food (broth + chicken + carrots + rice + parsley) and then back to regular home-cooked.

So this was the time I was waiting to start the Apocaps (proud owner of 4 bottles by now) and keep fighting the ugly C, yes!

The first complication: how to give Apocaps , because Johnnie is allergic to lactose.  So, no cream cheese for this guy.  Gave him a bit of his food and 3 capsules of Apocaps in the evening, 4 hours after his dinner.  Result:  a bit of loose bowels.  Waited for three days and tried again, this time in the morning, after his walk.  Result:  two hours later he vomited a yellowish gooey stuff.   Fortunately, after he was sick he felt better, and had his lunch normally an hour later, had his dinner, no other effects.

Needless to say I felt awful.  He never got sick from the chemo, because of the cerenia.  How, he was getting sick because of the Apocaps .

Can't rely on the oncovet here in Brazil because she has never used this supplement.

I read that 2% of the dogs do not tolerate Apocaps , because of the after-effects.  Any suggestions?

Should I give it another try or just move on?

My idea was to try Artemisinin , which I also bought, and see how he fares with that.  Just read Charley's mom news on his 4-yr ampuversary and her choice was Artemisinin , not Apocaps .

regards,

Daniela

Ongoing treatment: acupuncture + K-9 Immunity Plus ( 3chews) and home-cooked no-grain diet.   Stopped Apocaps because of liver issues.   Liver issues: controlling altered enzymes with SAM-e and Milk Thistle.  October 17:  started having seizures.  Taking fenobarbital for seizures.  April 18: started prednisone.

First ofall, CONGRATULATIONS CHAMP JOHNNIE!!!!!!! All done with chemo, YAAAAAAAAAY!!! And doing great!! :-) :-)

Happy Hannah did not have any issues with Appcaps, so don't have any first hand experience as far as side effects. However, because of her "largeness", I gave her...geez....I can't really remember...I think it was 6 -9 a day (?)...anyway, I do recall administering in several doses during the day.

You may want to try dividing it up into one, three times a day.. It may just be that Johnnie can't tolerate it regardless. I do know that many on the site have used Artemisinin .

For pill taking I used turkey liverwurst...any liverwurst will do. It's nice and stinky and pretty easy to hide pills. I alao gave her K9 Immunity Plus "treats".

Sorry Johnnie is having tummy issues with them. Yuck! But, without wuestion, there are lots of alternatives to try.

Mushroom therapy, maybe check into that here on the site. A lot of people use that now.

Hugs to that SWEET JOHNNIE! I know it feels so freeing to be done with all those vet visits! KEEP ON ROCKIN' JOHNNIE! Sending lots of hugs and love!!!

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!

Hey Daniela and Johnnie, we've been thinking about you, congrats on kickin' butt on his chemo sessions! YAY!

My thinking is to always introduce supplements slowly and build up from there. Are you giving them with plenty of food? If you can give a dose right before a meal (covered with something like liverwurst, as Sally suggested), that may help the Apocaps settle into his stomach. Dr. Dressler also has good information here in his blog about dealing with nausea. Also, try calling the good people at K9 Medicinals, they are distributors for Apocaps and are super knowledgable about it too. Their toll-free number is on their website, I'm pretty sure it works for international calls too.

Let us know what you find out OK? And give that boy a big smooch from us!

Hi Daniela is Johnnie on non seriodal anti inflamitories? because that can cause tummy upset when given with apocaps ? My dog is on rimadyl so I started her off on a small dose (she is meant to have 3,3 times a day - 9 total for her weight) I started her on 1 3 times a day and increased it by one capsule every few days when I new she wasn't having problems with it. Although I must say I haven't given her more than 7 a day so I don't know if she would tolerate the full dose with the pain relief.

Betsy went off cottage cheese as she had it so much so I gave it in a bit of peanut butter an hour before her dinner, but also I am sure I read somewhere you can give it with oily fish? So maybe mash up a sardine and empty the capsules into it?

Annie: no, Johnnie is only taking chondroitin/glucosamine ( 2 a day) and K-9 Immunity Plus ( 6 chews ).

Will try one capsule at a time and see how he fares.

thanks to all for the help and, most of all, for the support.

New update on Johnnie.

Sally: thanks a zillion for your advice on the liverwurst.  Worked perfectly for the Apocaps !  I found three different flavours that I can alternate: turkey, chicken and pork.

To avoid stomach upsets, started with one capsule, then two, and finally three.

Johnnie is now on a regular dosage of Apocaps , twice a day, total of 6 capsules/day.  Am giving them one hour before the main meals, lunch and dinner.

Johnnie's current "protocol":  3 chews of K-9 Immunity in the morning, between 6:30 and 7am, before his morning walk;  3 capsules of Apocaps around 11am with 1-2 tablespoons of liverwurst;  lunch at noon with one capsule of chondroitin;  3 capsules of Apocaps around 5pm;  dinner at 6pm + 1 capsule chondroitin;  3 chews of K-9 Immunity before bedtime, around 11pm.

Because of his weight, he should be taking 9 capsules of Apocaps a day, but I haven't figured how to do that yet.  I read that Apocaps is an oxidant, and K-9 immunity is an anti-oxidant, so for this reason they should be given a couple of hours apart.  Guess for tripawds we would need a 30-hour day or sleepless parents....

hugs to all,

Daniela

Yeah, a thirty hour day would be nice for some of this pill taking schedule! I wasn't always ale to be consistent either. I didntw realize that about not doing the Apocaps and K9 too close together. Oops!

So glad Johnnie is doing well and has adjusted to his "pills". I always say when it comes to K9 Immunity and Apocaps , I can't PROVE that they made a positive difference....but I BELIEVE that they made a positive difference! I also felt her energy level was higher when giving these on a consistent basis.

Keep on keeping on sweet Johnnie! We love you and your humans!!

Wow Daniela you are one amazing mom! What kind of method are you using to keep track of his pilling schedule? An app? Pen and paper? Glad to hear the liverwurst trick worked well. What an expert you've become, we're all learning so much from you both.

Give Johnnie a big smooch from us!

Daniela so happy you found the trick. I didn't use Apocaps so could not weigh in. So happy that Jonnie is on the upswing.
