Thank you Heather, it can't hurt to keep reminding people.

Hey if you have some recipes send 'em our way, we would love to post them in the Tripawds Nutrition blog if you'll allow us!

Spirit Jerry, the only thing I do is I take lean chicken breasts and slice them thinly and place them on my dehydrator and it does all the work. One can also use an oven. There is no real recipe because it is just chicken, but the trick is, is to make them as thin as the icky chinese chicken cuts because they can spoil if they are too thick which I unfortunately found out one time. Talk about a stink!

I will try it again so I can keep track of the time it took to dehydrate in the dehydrator. I know in the oven the temp is 250 degrees but I don't know how long. Also we cheat becaause we have a special drying mode on our oven. winker

Ya beat me to it, I was just going to share that. Saw it in this Dog Food Advisor post. The brands are:

  • Waggin’ Train Jerky Treats or Tenders (Nestle Purina)
  • Canyon Creek Ranch Jerky Treats or Tenders (Nestle Purina)
  • Milo’s Kitchen Home-Style Dog Treats (Del Monte Corp)

Really, is anyone surprised that they came from these companies? Ick.

More news on this as of April 12th, 2012

Here is a briefing:

Update 4/12/12: It's not just chicken jerky -- now dried sweet potato treats imported from China appear to be making dogs ill as well. There is even speculation that the problems may extend to pig ears and cat treats from China as well. These are the brands that have been mentioned so far:

  • Beefeaters Sweet Potato Snacks for Dogs
  • Canyon Creek Ranch Chicken Yam Good Dog Treats (FDA has issued a warning on this product)
  • Drs. Foster and Smith (exact item not specified in the report)
  • Dogswell Veggie Life Vitality

I took Heather's awesome instructional post and made a ton of both sweet potato and chicken. For Pegz and Chaz PLUS all our furry friends. They were a HUGE hit...and about as easy as you can get to make.

I might not have even tried except my kids reeeeeally loved those jerky treats. They missed them.

Oh lucky kids!

We have a dehydrator, I think we're gonna try that this weekend. Thanks for the reminder.

Today's PetMD blog post features more scary news on chicken jerky treats made in China. Please stay far away from them!

Jerky Treats in the News Again

The Food and Drug Administration and independent laboratories have been unable to figure out what is causing pets to become ill (FDA officials even made a trip to China). According to the FDA’s website:

Product samples were tested for Salmonella, metals, furans, pesticides, antibiotics, mycotoxins, rodenticides, nephrotoxins (such as aristolochic acid, maleic acid, paraquat, ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, toxic hydrocarbons, melamine and related triazines) and were screened for other chemicals and poisonous compounds.

My pup loved those chicken/sweetpotato jerky treats.  I can't remember the brand, but a couple of yrs ago (after the China dog food additives story broke, I cut him off.  He was not pleased.  Now if I'm looking for a new treat, I study the packaging for where it's made.  If it does not specifically say made in USA, I put it down.  Some mftrs are listing their corporate headquarter address as "made by".  Don't be fooled - when I've called some of them, the product is not actually produced here.  I must look like a nut at the store squinting at all the labels to ascertain country of origin, but so what - this is serious business; one of my pup's pals got quite ill.

You're not nuts, you're smart! I find that the better pet food & supply stores understand how conscientious some pet pawrents can be, and offer a lot of great tips about finding good healthy and safe treats.

If you haven't seen Cadence's Homemade Chicken Jerky Treat Nutrition blog post, check it out, you can learn how to make your own.
