I wanted to pass on some information on suggested supplements to give cancer pups. I went over all my supplements with my oncologist yesterday. I knew some of the stuff I was giving Zak might not be quite right but exactly wasn't sure. He's getting quite a few supplements. Most aren't hurting or anything.. just most likely not doing anything to fight off the cancer he said.

Here's the new list of what I'm giving to Zak. (He weighs 60lbs).  Piroxicam, algae based DHA (1000mg/day min for 60 lb pup – Zak gets 2000 mg) the L-arginine 2000mg, L-glutamine 1000mg, Calcium 1000mg (since he's on a home-coked diet is nec), Glucosamine 2000mg, CoQ10 100 mg and to add these two to his daily program: Agaricus Bio from the company Atlas World & IP-6.

He said to forget other mushroom blends being sold at nutrition stores. Apparently, they did testing at CSU when he was there on the mushrooms that are being sold & they aren't of value useless made through some type of 'water process' that Atlas World does with their Agaricus Bio

He said he still doesn't know if K9 Immunity is worth it because they haven't allowed him to test it even though he's asked them for permission several times. Plus, they are selling it for a large profit. He thinks it wiser to put my money into something he knows has some value based on testing they've done.

OK, so that's it.. I hope this information can help some other pups on the board.

All the best~

Jenna, thank you for posting those supplements here. We'll post some links and info about the various ones you mentioned, which I'm pretty sure haven't been discussed here.

It's good to hear perspectives from other oncologists about mushroom therapy. Jerry's oncologist, a Colorado State grad, is a firm believer in it, and ran clinical trials for K9 Immunity. We are waiting for an answer from her on the results of the testing, and will post them here as soon as she gets back to us.

Tell me again, where does Dr. Ogilvie practice? I forget.

Hey Rene,

I totally agree. Different perspectives give us different options which hopefully gives our pups some more advantages in a really tough battle.

Here's the link to the diet I'm using for Zak http://www.cvsangelcare.com/ht…..erdiet.htm

This link is to the DHA information their website. http://www.cvsangelcare.com/ht…..ac_dha.htm

I buy my algae DHA from Vitapal.com. It's the best price I've found.  http://www.vitapal.com/v-deva-…..51227.aspx  I get most of the others like l-arginine, l-glutamine, CoQ10, Glucosamine there too.

The Agaricus Bio from Atlas world I got from iherb.com & I got the IP-6 there too. http://www.iherb.com/Atlas-Wor…../3463?at=0

Take care,

Jenna

Zak,

How did you manage to get Dr Ogilvie as an oncologist?  He is very well-known and has done lots of research on nutrition and cancer.  I know that he is big on algae based DHA rather than fish oil or other antioxidants but I do not know of anyone else who has tried this. It can't hurt to follow his suggestions!  I do know that other oncologists have also tried to test K9 Immunity without success so it will be interesting to see what CSU finds when they conclude their study.

Just found this information about Agaricus Bio available at MotherNature.com

Atlas World Agaricus Bio - 600 mg- 60 vegi capAtlas World USA is proud to offer an immune enhancing dietary supplement composed of our U.S. grown Agaricus blazei mushroom. The human immune system, comprised mainly of tissues and cells defends the body against diseases. More specifically, Natural Killer cells or NK cells play a critical role in neutralizing outside organisms that enter the body.Agaricus Bio capsules were formulated by our team of experts, scientists and physicians to enhance your health. The primary ingredient of the Agaricus Bio is the Agaricus blazei mushroom, which has been found to have a positive effect in strengthening and increasing Natural Killer cells in in vitro studies. We believe that all four stages in the life cycle of the Agaricus blazei are beneficial to your overall health and have designed the first such product, which utilizes the full life cycle of the Agaricus blazei. Our Agaricus Blazei is U.S. grown with top-quality control and state-of-the-art technology which results in a consistent and superior mushroom product.Agaricus blazei contains powerful immune stimulants called beta- 1,3 / 1,6 -glucans, polysaccharides (chains of sugar molecules formed together to make up complex sugars) known to enhance the body's immune system.Over 30 years of research on the Agaricus Blazei Mushroom in Japan, Brazil and in the U.S. has shown the Agaricus Blazei to be effective in strengthening the immune system. In 1995, Dr. Mamdooh Ghoneum, Ph.D., from King Drew Medical Center of UCLA, found that the Agaricus mushroom increases the total number of all immune cells within the body. In addition, he discovered that the Agaricus not only increased the number of NK cells, but also made each individual NK cell more powerful.

We'd love to hear more about the IP-6 component of Zak's treatment. What dosage and brand?

SmartBomb had this to say about Source Naturals IP-6 Powder (400 grams)

Source Naturals IP-6 Powder, 1 g (400 grams)IP-6 (inositol hexaphosphate) is a component of certain dietary fibers, particularly most cereal grains, legumes, and seeds high in oil. Many researchers believe some of fiber's health benefits may be due to the antioxidant, immune-enhancing, and cardiovascular-supporting activities of IP-6.

House of Nutrition says the following about Physiologic's IP-6

Physiologic's IP-6 510 mg 120 capsIP-6, inositol hexaphosphate, is a natural compound found in the fiber of common cerals, nuts, and legumes, including oats, wheat, rice, soy, and corn. Because IP-6 is phosphorylated (addition of phospate group, PO) in all six positions of the carbon ring, it has the potential to bind and form complexes with carions ( a positively charged ion) IP-6 is, as well an antiozidant. The IP-6 in this product is dervied from rice bran.Note: Pregnant or nursing women should consult a doctor before using any product.Directions: For adults, take (2) capsules twice daily, between or before meals. Best taken on an empty stomach, or follow the advice of your health care professional.Ingredients per 2 capsules: Inositol Hexaphosphate 1020 mgOther ingredients: Cellulose (Plant Origin), Gelatin, Silica, Vegetable Magnesium Stearate.
