last friday, our acupuncturist, dr. mili bass, asked if we'd be interested in trying out a new suppliment for jane.  she's gayle's 14 and a half year old sister, shepherd mix, who has had back/neck/hip issues as she's aged.  sometimes she's taked quite a bit if time to get up, or get down…arthritis and such.

well, anyway, she gave us a bottle of Duralactin. it's made from the milk of super-immunized cows, according to the label, and based on internet research, it sounded pretty reasonable to try it.  Dr. Bass said her acupuncturist/oncologist friend in memphis is recommending this alot to her patients.

well, jane's been taking it for a week now, and i truly believe we see more 'fluidity' in her movements.  she's not running around like a pup, but she's definitely getting up and down easier, going out to pee/poop with a quicker step, etc.  don't know if anyone else has tried this, but we want to pass along the info.  gayle has not tried it, as she doesn't seem to have the same struggles as jane…but in the future, it might be an option.

if anyone else has any experience with Duralactin, we'd like to hear about it.  it's available on Amazon.com, and it doesn't seem to be too darn expensive…

Charon,

Hope you're feeling better this week!

Hey that Duralactin sounds interesting. What the heck is a super immunized cow anyhow? Super Cows?!

Thanks for pointing it out to us, we've never heard of it. Can you point us to some of the research you found about it?

You're right: Amazon has the best prices. And hint hint everypawdy, all purchases made through Amazon helps support the Tripawds community!

WOW!  I gotta check that stuff out!  Thanks 'Sister Charon' for letting us know!

She departed us unexpectedly  from bleeding internally on January 23, 2011
Comet came from a dog hoarder and was born with a deformed front leg. She was sassy and bossy but oh so much fun!  She lost her brother, Rugby in 2009 and got Monkeybutt, the king of Monkeydogs!  He was the most annoying dog ever to a tripawd!

here's what i discovered from my search…

from the http://www.duralactin.com website:

Duralactin® is a natural product derived from milk that can help your companion live a comfortable and active life.

What is Duralactin?

Duralactin® contains MicroLactin®, a patented dried milk protein from the milk of hyperimmunized cows. MicroLactin® contains factors that appear to block cytokines to inhibit neutrophil participation in the inflammatory response. This reduces inflammation and helps prevent subsequent tissue damage caused by excess neutrophil infiltration. At this level, Duralactin® helps stop chronic inflammation at the cellular level and so avoids inhibiting protective prostaglandin activity.

Partially purified preparations inhibit inflammation in many laboratory animal models. The anti-inflammatory activity is bioavailable both orally and systemically, is effective regardless of the etiology of the inflammation and appears to function with no evidence of gastro-intestinal irritation. Duralactin® is an ideal therapeutic option for the management of chronic inflammation where neutrophils are known to participate. Duralactin® supports normal activity and wellness.

from http://www.healthpets.com website:

Duralactin

Duralactin contains MicroLactin, a patented special milk protein concentrate (SMPC) from the milk of hyperimmunized cows. The anti-inflammatory activity provided by MicroLactin is effective regardless of the cause of the inflammation, and appears to function with no evidence of gastro-intestinal tract irritation. INDICATIONS: Duralactin is intended to be used as a nutritional aid for the management of chronic inflammatory conditions including musculoskeletal disorders in aging pets. Ingredients: Each tablet of Duralactin Canine contains Microlactin™ (dried milk protein), dextrose, stearic acid, vanilla flavoring and magnesium stearate. All ingredients are food grade.

right now, jane is taking the liquid (that's the sample dr. bass received), but we will probably continue with the pill form, for ease of consumption.  it might be worth checking out, or talking to your vet about – we see improvement in jane so far.
