Hello,

We are trying to limit Sebastian's carbs. He used to feast on Greenies, but we're concerned about the ingredients in their grain-free , so we are looking for other options that can help his breath and give his teeth a good cleaning.

We are looking at adding some coconut oil for the breath part, but have you guys found any other treats that are grain free and use products that are somewhat low in carbs?

We found some Merrick Fresh Kisses and ordered some... will let you guys know if Sebastian likes them or not, but any other treat suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  Here are the ingredients in the Fresh Kisses... I'm not familiar with all ingredients, so any help in explaining nutritional pros/cons of these ingredients would also be appreciated.

Pea Starch, Tapioca Starch, Vegetable Glycerin, Gelatin, Natural Flavor, Coconut Oil, Gum Arabic, Fruit Juice Color, Turmeric, Sunflower Oil, Peppermint Oil, Lemongrass Oil, Turmeric Oleoresin, Rosemary Oil.

Good morning 🙂

Honestly the best thing you can do for Sebastian is to brush his teeth. No carbs, no calories, and it will keep the tartar away which causes the bad breath. Good chewy toys help keep it down also and help keep gums healthy. They make toothpaste designed specially for pets. The mint and other ingredients in our toothpaste can make them sick. They make finger brushes as well as regular brushes, but the extra soft baby toothbrush will work just as well. Good oral care is one of the best things you can do for your furbabies. If he gets funny about you going into his mouth, start by letting him lick a small amount of the pet toothpaste off your finger. They usually make it in some meat flavor, like chicken. Little by little, as he licks your finger, get closer and massage his gums and teeth with your finger. From there graduate to a brush or finger brush. Make it part of your routine a couple of times a week and not only will he have better breath, he will keep his pearly whites a lot longer!

Best. Answer. EVER! Thank you Jackie! clap

We've been brushing Wyatt's teeth relatively regularly, sometimes every other night, since we adopted him at 8 months old. Here's a couple of posts we shared about dental health. They do feature manufactured treats in there, some which you may want to check out, others which may not meet your criteria for Sebastian.

Meanwhile here's a blog post we just wrote about pet treats. Good timing!

Haha thanks. Yeah that's him. He's really good with the brushing, now we can actually use a real toothbrush and he doesn't try to eat it or munch it in half.
